Assessment:
The word assessment is derived for the Latin assidere,
meaning “to sit beside or with” (Wiggins 1993).
Measurement:
The word “measurement” is derived from the Greek word
“metron” which means a limited proportion.
Evaluation:
Evaluation has its origin from the Latin word
“Valupure"which means the value of a particular thing, idea
or action.
Definitions
Assessment:
Assessment is the collection of relevant information that may be relied on for
making decisions. (Fenton)
Measurement:
Measurement as the assignment of numerals to objects or events according to
certain rules. (J.P.Guilford)
Evaluation:
It is the systematic process of data collection and it’s analysis to make
decisions in the light of pre-determined objectives.
Purpose of assessment

• This includes
• Determination of level of achievement
• Effectiveness of the teacher, teaching method, learning
situation and Instructional materials
• Motivating the child by showing him his progress i.e.
success breeds success.
• It can be used to predict students performance in novel
situations.
• Guidance functions
• Assessment procedure can give the teacher diagnostic data about
individual pupils in his class. These will show the pupils’ strength,
weaknesses and interests. It can also help to decide on which method to
use or what remedial activities that are necessary. Parents and pupils can
also be rightly guided in terms of career choice.
• Administrative functions
• Assessing can serve as communication of information when
data collected are Used in reports to parents
• It could form the basis upon which streaming, grading,
selection and Placement are based.
• Making appropriate decisions and recommendations on
curricula packages and for curricular activities .

• Measure pupils achievement and motivate pupils
learning.Student have the right to now the progress they are
making whether they have attend the objective of the
subject matter or not thus results must be made known to
them.It can also encourage people to study more. They will
be motivated to participate actively in class and e xert all
efforts just to make certain that they pass. They will now
the quality and amount of work they have to strive for.

• To determine the relative effectiveness of the programme in terms of students’
behavioural output.
• To make reliable decisions about educational planning.
• To identify students’ growth or lack of growth in acquiring desirable
knowledge, skills, attitudes and societal values.
• To identify problems that might hinder or prevent the achievement of set
goals .
• To help teachers determine the effectiveness of their teaching techniques and
learning Materials;
• To help motivate students to want to learn more as they discover their progress
or lack
