Measurement assigns numerals to student performance according to rules. Evaluation systematically collects and analyzes data to make decisions based on objectives. The purposes of these concepts include determining student achievement, evaluating teaching effectiveness, providing diagnostic information, and guiding administrative decisions like placement.

2. Assessment:
The word assessment is derived for the Latin assidere,
meaning “to sit beside or with” (Wiggins 1993).
Measurement:
The word “measurement” is derived from the Greek word
“metron” which means a limited proportion.
Evaluation:
Evaluation has its origin from the Latin word
“Valupure"which means the value of a particular thing, idea
or action.

3. Definitions
Assessment:
Assessment is the collection of relevant information that may be relied on for
making decisions. (Fenton)
Measurement:
Measurement as the assignment of numerals to objects or events according to
certain rules. (J.P.Guilford)
Evaluation:
It is the systematic process of data collection and it’s analysis to make
decisions in the light of pre-determined objectives.

4. Purpose of assessment

individual pupils in his class. These will show the pupils’ strength,
weaknesses and interests. It can also help to decide on which method to
use or what remedial activities that are necessary. Parents and pupils can
also be rightly guided in terms of career choice.

• Assessing can serve as communication of information when
data collected are Used in reports to parents
• It could form the basis upon which streaming, grading,
selection and Placement are based.

curricula packages and for curricular activities .

• Measure pupils achievement and motivate pupils

subject matter or not thus results must be made known to
them.It can also encourage people to study more. They will

efforts just to make certain that they pass. They will now
