ASSESSMENT &
DIAGNOSIS
What do we mean byAssessment?
• Assessment is the systematic evaluation and
measurement of Psychological, Biological and
Social factors in an individual presenting with a
possible psychological disorder.
Diagnosis
• It is a process of determining whether the
particular problem afflicting the individual
meets all the criteria for a Psychological
disorder, as set forth in DSM –IV.
Value ofAssessment
• Assessment techniques are subject to a number
of strict requirements.
• Value of Assessment depends on:
• Reliability.
• Validity.
• Standardization.
Reliability
• In simple words it is defined as the degree to
which a measurement is consistent.
• To elaborate, Reliability means consistency of
the scores on the same test on different
intervals.
Lets understand with this example
• How irritated you would be if you had a
stomach ache, and you went to four competent
physicians and got four different diagnosis and
treatments….. The diagnosis would be
unreliable because two or more raters did not
agree on the conclusion.
To be specific…lets look at this
• If you go to a clinician on Tuesday and you are
told that you have an I.Q of 110, you should
expect a similar result if you take the same test
on Thursday (Test- Retest reliability).
How do we improve this?
• To improve this , the Psychologist has to
carefully design their assessment devices and
then conduct research on them to ensure that
two or more raters will get the same answers
(Inter reliability).
Let’s take this small test on ‘Anger’
• I love partying (Yes/ No).
• I throw things when I am angry (Yes/ No).
• People call me Micky (Yes/ No).
• I love sitting for longer hours on the beach and
listen to music (Yes/ No).
• I cry when I am hurt (Yes/ No).
• Kerala is really God’s own country (Yes/ No).
Validity
• In simple words a test is considered to be valid
when it measures what it purports to measure.
• When you compare the result of one assessment
with the result of another assessment, it is
called concurrent or descriptive validity.
Validity continue…..
• After the assessment, if you are able to predict
or if it tells you what will happen in the future
is called Predictive validity.
Eg: An I.Q test functions with the goal that who
will succeed in the school and who will not?
Standardization
• It is a process by which a certain set of
standards or norms is determined for a
technique in order to make its use consistent
across different measurements.
• These standards also might apply to the
procedures of testing , scoring and evaluating
the data.
Standardization….. example
• One test may be given to a large group who
differ on factors such as
age, race, gender, socio- economic status.
• Now if you are an Indian female, 19 years
old, from a middle class background, your test
score should be compared to the scores of
others like you and not to the scores of different
people like 60 years ,African female.
Types ofAssessment
• Intellectual Assessment (I.Q).
• Personality Assessment.
• Aptitude and Achievement.
• Interest assessment.
• Psycho- Educational assessment.
• Neuro- Psychological assessment.
• Psycho- Physiological assessment.

Assessment in Psychology.

  • 2. What do we mean byAssessment? • Assessment is the systematic evaluation and measurement of Psychological, Biological and Social factors in an individual presenting with a possible psychological disorder.
  • 3. Diagnosis • It is a process of determining whether the particular problem afflicting the individual meets all the criteria for a Psychological disorder, as set forth in DSM –IV.
  • 4. Value ofAssessment • Assessment techniques are subject to a number of strict requirements. • Value of Assessment depends on: • Reliability. • Validity. • Standardization.
  • 5. Reliability • In simple words it is defined as the degree to which a measurement is consistent. • To elaborate, Reliability means consistency of the scores on the same test on different intervals.
  • 6. Lets understand with this example • How irritated you would be if you had a stomach ache, and you went to four competent physicians and got four different diagnosis and treatments….. The diagnosis would be unreliable because two or more raters did not agree on the conclusion.
  • 7. To be specific…lets look at this • If you go to a clinician on Tuesday and you are told that you have an I.Q of 110, you should expect a similar result if you take the same test on Thursday (Test- Retest reliability).
  • 8. How do we improve this? • To improve this , the Psychologist has to carefully design their assessment devices and then conduct research on them to ensure that two or more raters will get the same answers (Inter reliability).
  • 9. Let’s take this small test on ‘Anger’ • I love partying (Yes/ No). • I throw things when I am angry (Yes/ No). • People call me Micky (Yes/ No). • I love sitting for longer hours on the beach and listen to music (Yes/ No). • I cry when I am hurt (Yes/ No). • Kerala is really God’s own country (Yes/ No).
  • 10. Validity • In simple words a test is considered to be valid when it measures what it purports to measure. • When you compare the result of one assessment with the result of another assessment, it is called concurrent or descriptive validity.
  • 11. Validity continue….. • After the assessment, if you are able to predict or if it tells you what will happen in the future is called Predictive validity. Eg: An I.Q test functions with the goal that who will succeed in the school and who will not?
  • 12. Standardization • It is a process by which a certain set of standards or norms is determined for a technique in order to make its use consistent across different measurements. • These standards also might apply to the procedures of testing , scoring and evaluating the data.
  • 13. Standardization….. example • One test may be given to a large group who differ on factors such as age, race, gender, socio- economic status. • Now if you are an Indian female, 19 years old, from a middle class background, your test score should be compared to the scores of others like you and not to the scores of different people like 60 years ,African female.
  • 14. Types ofAssessment • Intellectual Assessment (I.Q). • Personality Assessment. • Aptitude and Achievement. • Interest assessment. • Psycho- Educational assessment. • Neuro- Psychological assessment. • Psycho- Physiological assessment.
