Codes and conventions are tools like music, script, costumes, and camera angles that filmmakers use to help audiences understand characters and their roles in the story. How these tools are used, or conventions, can influence whether audiences like or dislike characters and comprehend their importance. For example, if a character is shown entering a building at night with threatening music, audiences may view them as a thief, but if they are in bright light with pleasant music, they may seem like a regular employee working late. Audio, symbolic, and technical codes also provide clues through dialogue, imagery, camera work, and more.

To film scenes for their trailer, the team had to carefully plan the narratives, locations, actors, props, costumes, and dialogue. They created storyboards, shot lists, and scripts to ensure each narrative fit their genre and audience, every scene had a designated location, and all crew members knew their roles so shooting could run smoothly.
Using Garageband to create Soundtrack
We researched horror soundtracks and instruments commonly used in psychological thrillers such as piano. This inspired our soundtrack for a scene from our film where a character is taunted in her bedroom. We uploaded a lullaby to GarageBand to edit, adding and removing parts while layering instruments, though it was difficult due to inexperience with the software. We struggled to sync the music to fit the timing of scenes in the trailer.
