This study investigated the effect of speaking during syringe preparation for intravitreal injection. 90 syringes were prepared by 10 analysts under 3 conditions: speaking, speaking with a mask, and silence. No contamination was found on the syringes. However, positive control plates showed bacterial growth in 50% of plates for speaking without a mask, 30% for speaking with a mask, but none for silence. While speaking did not directly contaminate the syringes, it increased bacterial contamination of the preparation area compared to silence. Larger studies are needed to determine if this increased contamination could potentially contaminate syringes and increase risk of endophthalmitis. Speaking during preparation should be avoided to
