The internal iliac artery arises from the common iliac artery and supplies the pelvis. It has anterior and posterior divisions. The anterior division supplies the pelvic viscera and perineum through branches like the uterine, vaginal, inferior vesical, and internal pudendal arteries. The posterior division supplies the posterior pelvic wall, gluteal region and adductor region through branches like the iliolumbar, lateral sacral, and superior gluteal arteries. Venous drainage of the pelvis is mainly through the internal iliac vein.
