My philosophy on leadership is to train, educate, and motivate Soldiers to
become effective leaders. I will achieve this through setting the example, providing
clear guidance and expectations, and through showing genuine care for the wellbeing of
all those around me. I believe in being a lifelong teacher, mentor, as well as continuing
to learn myself. I will encourage my Soldiers to do the same. Continuing education,
whether it be through college courses or military courses, is one of the most effective

The enemy is getting smarter, and so should we. By striving to always learn new
things and improve processes for efficiency, Soldiers will become more well–rounded
and highly effective leaders.
Physical Fitness: Physical fitness is key. Staying in shape, eating right, and
taking care of your body will not only make physical tasks easier, it will improve your

mental agility. Soldiers that work out regularly and eat responsibly will not only be able
to meet the APFT standards, but it will greatly increase our readiness and mission
accomplishment.

Trust: Trust is important at all levels and across all ranks. Trust is paramount
within a cohesive team. Since everyone is invested in each other because they trust
one another, any task will be accomplished. However when there is no trust within the
team mistakes happen and missions fail. You can make a mistake and not break trust,
but not owning up to or hiding from that mistake will almost certainly break it.

INTRODUCTION
My leadership philosophy is very simple and can be compared to the simplicity of the lifecycle of a
tree. A seed forms into a sapling which in turn grows into a mature, majestic, vibrant–full
representation of those leaders who have contributed to their development and growth process on
their journey to become leaders. Seems very simple when put in to those terms, however, each of
these processes are very complex and need everyone's input, attention and examples; both good and
bad, leadership to build on their own style. Leadership is a lifecycle and ever evolving! Leadership
defined in my own words is having the ability to create an environment where everyone has the
chance to thrive and learn from each other both positively and negatively. I certainly do not know
everything there is to know about being a good leader, but I am confident and comfortable in my
own area of expertise. I am a mature tree that falls in a row amongst many other trees. I have
worked for horrible leaders and great leaders throughout my career. I have learned so much from
both types and have taken, what I feel, the best from each one to grow my own style. I don't
honestly feel that there is another one of me or my leadership style running around. I am unique.
LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS
My leadership behaviors are very much systematic in the way I handle situations. I see where it is
that I have failed my peeps, I try to find those new innovative ways to re–engage and improve. This
behavior in the tree world is called moving the nutrients beneath the bark to the areas that need the
food to grow. Sometime I have a tendency to focus on the easy routes (roots) that will give me the
most bang for my buck and overlook those personnel that are wasting my time. No matter what I do
or say there will be those few who just are not worth the investment in growth (pruning). I know I

moment I only have a select few who have gone above and beyond and have been recognized but

I believe that I would have made many of the same decisions with only a few changes if I were
faced with the same challenges. Both the commander and I have a tendency to emphasize people
focused behaviors which "include developing a positive climate, facilitating team member
participation in the group...and being friendly and supportive."1 We both agree that a vision is
necessary for the organization which was accomplished when the commander created the
commanders tenants. My leadership philosophy believes in and support all members of the
organization. The commander brought underutilized/marginalized members back into the
organization and spoke with all ranks within the organization to get their input on the health of the
squadron for squadron improvements. I was very impressed with the way the commander viewed
the type of person he wanted in the CEM; an individual with a differing viewpoint that can assist in
making better decisions. One decision that I would've made that differed from the commander were
keeping a first–sergeant that I did not have a good relationship with. As Lt Col Jeffry Smith states,
the first–sergeant is the "most important informal leader of your squadron."1 If I were to have a

My Philosophy on Leadership I developed my philosophy on good leadership through watching the
actions of both great and poor leaders. The best assignment in my career was the Administrative
Assistant to COL James W. Runyon, who served as the Joint Chief of Staff for the West Virginia
Army National Guard. COL Runyon's leadership style was strong, compassionate and professional.
His philosophies included "treat our Soldiers how you want your family treated", "what is fair for
one is fair for everyone", and "if you do how you always have, you will get what you always got".
COL Runyon made Soldiers feel appreciated, no matter how big or small the task. Leaders earn their

Leadership is at its core an abstract idea; what is the manifestation of leadership is style. Each leader
has some type of philosophy, know or unknown. This would be what I call a "leadership belief."
Irwin says, "As with others we must vet these beliefs and root out any that are fundamentally

Integrity I believe is the most important trait because without integrity all of the other traits are
diminished. Maintaining competence is a never ending struggle and requires me as a leader to keep
learning. I strive to maintain my competence by doing things that help me grow as a leader. Those

I believe a personal leadership philosophy is developed through experiences as both a follower and a
leader. Leadership skills are gained in many ways such as learning from the successful methods and
mistakes of others, constructive criticism from followers and leader colleagues alike and remaining
current in leadership literature. I have developed my theory based on personal encounters with
positive and negative leadership experiences which include leading by example, listening and
adapting to your followers needs and lastly, including followers in times of significant change.
I believe that leading by example is a vital tenet of leadership. Johnson (2015) found that when a
police field supervisor proactively engaged in investigative work, the volume of same work
performed by their patrol officers doubled (p. 238). Johnson (2015, p. 237) also found that the
supervisors had to only engage in one or two of these proactive activities in order to spark the patrol
officers to conduct extra investigative work. I believe that if you want a specific result from your
followers such as working more efficiently, improving their skills or showing initiative in the
workplace you must do the same so they do not feel that they are merely picking up your slack.

I believe that having the knowledge, and a clear understanding about the responsibilities of a leader
will have a tremendous effect on the outcomes that such a leader is able to achieve. During one of
my assignments as the team leader of a translation project, called "Scan Eagle", our team was tasked

My father once told me that, "everything we do– be it in academia, at work, social or family life–we
are guided by principles, beliefs and values that collectively form our ideology of life." I believe that

Peters( 2001) argues that honesty is key to the relationship between a leader her followers. Stating
that people tend to follow those that they trust and believe have individual's interests at heart. I
concur with Peters, once trust ceases to exists the leader loses credibility with her followers. This
could lead to a complete breakdown in communication and subordinates shunning the leader.
In an organization, I feel a leader also acts as a translator and mediator between top management
and lower levels. I believe a leader has the responsibility to be a filter and translates relevant
information from top management to lower level staff, and vice versa. As such there will be

to lower levels, which may be viewed as omission of truth by subordinates. However in an
organization not all information should be privy to everyone and the leader has to have the sense to
be a buffer of information.
Leadership at its core is based on a relationship between a leader and followers, once the group loses
respect for their leader and perceive them to be dishonest this could potentially have a negative
impact on the organisation as a whole. Honesty especially in the media industry where we are bound
by codes of ethics, and policies is important. An unethical leader could bring the whole organization
to disrepute, in an industry where credibility and integrity are essential.

This definition is weak at best. Throughout my career, I have witnessed this form of leadership

Gunner's Mates assigned to it. I have a full five percent of the Gunner's Mates in the Coast Guard
that I lead. During my four year assignment at MFPU Kings Bay, approximately 55 Gunner's mates
(9.2 percent) will have been under my leadership. I see that as an enormous responsibility. As a
young Gunner's Mate I saw my senior leadership as people capable of effecting great change on the
rating. Now today I am in the position to have that same impact. 2. The foundation of my leadership
philosophy is anchored by a few key influences. The two I will address here are polar opposites.
ETCM Joe Rowe was the Chief of the Mess in Valdez, AK as well as the ESD supervisor. Joe taught
me about empowering your workforce. He understood that he was no longer the technical expert
within his rating.

Leadership Philosophies
My leadership philosophy is all about people, to elaborate on this principle I believe that Soldiers
are the Army's most precious assets as a fighting force. I believe that leadership is treating Soldiers
with respect to influence them in order to achieve their full potential and strive to provide them with
mentoring along the way. Being a Noncommissioned Officer means a lot to me, the day I became a
Noncommissioned Officer was a very important day in my life. The place was Balad, Iraq, 2003 at
the memorial ceremony after my unit lost Staff Sergeant Joseph Camara. He was our first casualty in
combat. He was a soft spoken leader that rarely raised his voice, but he also carried himself with
confidence. I will never forget the last words I heard from him the day he died, his tone and words
were engraved in my memory from that point in my life as a Soldier. On that day, his tone was
different as I heard him raised his voice to one of his team leaders saying: "Respect the Soldier, it
does not matter what rank he is...respect the Soldier!" I knew then, I wanted to be a leader like him.
I wanted to stand up for those with whom I will serve and those with whom would look up to me as

However, my opinion of being a leader is about two attributes that I believe a leader must possess
and they are non–negotiable: Integrity and Character. As Soldiers we all make mistakes and learn
from experience, a leader is able to recognize that everyone is a human being and therefore
everyone has a need to learn and grow as an individual. Leaders must possess the integrity to own
the "the good and the bad" and carry that weight evenly with character embodied by the Army
