History First explored in 1516 by Juan Diaz de Solis, Argentina developed slowly under Spanish colonial rule. Buenos Aires was settled in 1580; the cattle industry was thriving as early as 1600. Invading British forces were expelled in 1806—1807, and after Napoleon conquered Spain (1808), the Argentinians set up their own government in 1810. On July 9, 1816, independence was formally declared.
People The ancestors of most Argentineans of today originally came from Spain and Italy, with smaller percentages coming from other European nations and Middle-Eastern countries. The country also has a Jewish population of about 350,000, the fifth-largest in the world, and a similar number of Syrian Lebanese people.
Charity Projects Our volunteer projects are based in the appealing city of Córdoba.  Often referred to as the heartland of Argentina, Córdoba still retains its colonial history and is now mixed with Argentina's blend of modernism.

Famous People Argentina has some famous people such as Lionel Messi. René Favaloro is a worldwide Argentine cardiac surgeon, a pioneer of coronary bypass surgery. In 1967, René Favaloro became the first surgeon to perform bypass surgery on a patient suffering from coronary artery disease. Dr Rene G. Favaloro (1923–2000) is considered one of the preeminent cardiovascular surgeons of the 20th century.
