1) Spain conquered most of Latin America in the 16th-17th centuries and established a class system with Native Americans at the bottom, often forced to work on plantations. African slaves were later imported to supplement the declining Native American population. 2) In the late 18th century, Toussaint L'Ouverture led a successful slave rebellion in Haiti that led to its independence from France in 1804, making it the first Latin American country to gain independence. 3) Simón Bolívar led independence movements across Latin America in the 1810s-1820s that liberated Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Bolivia from Spanish rule.
