1. The document discusses scale and how organizations can achieve greater scale through open communities, being web-centric, and having a global reach from the start.
2. It provides examples of highly scaled online communities and platforms like Wikipedia, Kickstarter, and Google Books to show what is possible with the right approach.
3. Museums are encouraged to think bigger about how to accomplish their missions and engage more people worldwide through embracing new digital approaches and tools that enable widespread participation and collaboration at a large scale.
Participation, Reconnection, and Design: presentation by Marc Rettig and Hannah du Plessis of Fit Associates, as part of the Interaction 17 conference redux for IxDA Pittsburgh.
Argues that participation in a vast and growing movement toward a sustainable and equitable future is a fertile frontier for design, and an invitation to adopt new approaches to work.
A shared presentation by Marc Rettig of Fit Associates and Aradhana Goel, then of Maya Design and now at IDEO. Provides great case studies, frameworks, tools and examples from work in designing for people's experience. Case stories include the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh (Aradhana) and Vassol's CANVAS (now called NOVA) product for measuring blood flow in the brain.
Presented at the Idean UX Summit Austin, May 2014. My colleagues and I are integrating approaches for creating with social complexity, and this talk provides an overview of our work in progress.
It outlines the nature of social complexity, and surveys three approaches appropriate for the challenge: Positive Deviance, Theory U & Social Labs, and the work of Dave Snowden and Cognitive Edge.
Consider this a case of "showing my mess." Future installments will reflect more synthesis, tell more stories, and better describe the emerging practice of managing emergence.
Slides from a keynote talk at UX India 2014.
People have been creating together for thousands of years. Some of those people have written about their experience, and so we have the possibility of building on their wisdom. In this talk, Marc Rettig describes the age-old story of people who seek to have a creative voice through their work, and to connect their personal excitement and possibilities to the needs of the world. As this story repeats itself for many in the world of “user experience,” another familiar dynamic comes to light: the challenge of working in settings that express desire for creativity, but reward compliance. And therein lies a defining question of our time and our careers: where does profound creativity come from?

Question everything - Designing more effectively for social impactRichard Anderson
Standard human-centered design practices are often well-suited for well-structured problems, but fall short for considering the broader social implications of solutions to well-structured problems and for attempting to address ill-structured or so-called “wicked societal problems” (e.g., our broken healthcare system, homelessness, addiction to social media or electronic devices).
Richard will review many of the common characteristics of well-structured, ill-structured, and wicked problems, and, with the workshop attendees, will discuss their implications.
Then, by questioning everything about the standard design process for well-structured problems, Richard will identify common process shortcomings, present examples of projects that ignored such shortcomings as well as of projects that didn’t, and provide attendees with the opportunity to experience ways of how to address such shortcomings.
Attendees will emerge better able to target social impact intentionally and better able to design for achieving that intentional social impact.

"If you love your content, set it free" ?Mike Ellis
Traditional business models have scarcity at their core: when something is scarce, it becomes valuable. Online, this notion is challenged: in a world where every one of us can copy and distribute content at the click of a mouse, notions of ‘scarcity’ become more and more distant from reality. Several commentators have suggested that scale – i.e. providing more access to ‘valuable’ content rather than less – is actually a more scalable business model for the online economy. This session will look at ways in which content can be freed, and will also examine some of the issues which follow around control and authority.

This paper will use a case study of the city of Detroit to examine the relevance of shifting population demographics to museums’ community engagement. In recent years, Detroit has endured substantial changes in its population and, consequently, its culture and identity as a city. The implications of such demographic shifts will be discussed in the context of participatory museum programs, such as DIA Inside|Out, and the ways in which Detroit museums are attempting to understand and engage an ever-evolving audience. The importance of local ethnographies and addressing the unique needs of metamorphosing populations will play a vital role in this discussion.

The 10x Effect - Unlocking the Business Transforming Secrets of Exponenital10x Nation
Our world is on the precipice of a major paradigm shift in business.
The age of cumbersome corporate giants is coming to a close. And the age of the agile exponential business is coming online.
The pace and scope of growth in technology has made the status quo model of scarcity-centered business almost completely obsolete.
On the flip side, these ever-accelerating technologies are allowing abundance-minded businesses to do far more with far less.
Embracing exponential practices like cloud computing, crowd-sourcing, and staff-on-demand have allowed a new generation of companies to experience unprecedented growth, scalability, and agility.
But how can embracing these exponential changes affect positive change in your business?
The great challenge to museum architecture lies in providing for the often conflicting uses of the building. On one hand, the important objects in the collection must be preserved, and preservation often requires very specific environments. On the other hand, museums make parts of their collection available to the public, so the environment must be comfortable for people, enabling their movement through the space and providing for their safety.

Lego Beowulf and the Web of Hands and Hearts, for the Danish national museum ...Michael Edson
This talk was delivered at the awards ceremony for the 2012 Bikuben Foundation Danish Museum Prize in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Ideas about what museums are, who they serve, and the role they play in society are changing with dramatic speed, driven largely by social media and the participatory culture of global networks.
Denmark supports world-class museums, with remarkable collections, expert staff, and beautiful architecture. But how can museum leaders balance the traditional concepts of organizational mission and outcomes with the disruptive possibilities being demonstrated by those who love and use museums in new ways?

I am a friendly and enthusiastic multi-disciplinary designer who is dedicated and willing to learn new things. I am based in the UK and I am a graduate who has just finished studying my final year in BA Design at Goldsmiths University of London. I have gained a variety of skills from model making and prototyping to graphical programmes such as Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. I have a background in the arts and have had a love for drawing and painting for many years and have honed these skills. I am adaptable and love to learn new skills.
While studying design, I discovered how much I love how the subject crosses over many different disciplines and fields and I look forward to hopefully working alongside these many disciplines during my career.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
