The Explosive Destruction System is a mobile system used to safely destroy chemical munitions through containment and neutralization. It uses explosive charges to access munitions and destroy explosives, then neutralizes chemicals with appropriate reagents. Samples are tested before waste is removed to ensure neutralization. The heart of the EDS is a sealed stainless steel vessel providing total blast, vapor, liquid and fragment containment during the destruction process.

The Pentagon has directed ACWA to develop an alternative approach for hydrolysate treatment at Pueblo and Blue Grass in case the on-site methods become incapable. ACWA wants to develop criteria with input from the CACs and NRC for evaluating any alternative treatment approaches. ACWA will have the CACs review a statement of task for the NRC before submitting. The NRC is expected to deliver a letter report for Pueblo in 10-12 months and a full report for Blue Grass in 18 months. Developing contingency criteria does not imply changes to current on-site hydrolysate treatment and allows for community input. The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant (PCAPP) will safely destroy 2,611 tons of mustard agent in mortar rounds and artillery projectiles stored at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot (PCD).
Neutralization followed by biotreatment is the technology selected by the Department of Defense to destroy the Pueblo chemical weapons stockpile.
The Program Manager, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (ACWA), headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is responsible for managing all aspects of the safe and environmentally sound destruction of the chemical weapons stockpiles in Colorado and Kentucky.

The Pentagon has directed ACWA to develop an alternative approach for hydrolysate treatment at Pueblo and Blue Grass in case the on-site methods become incapable. ACWA wants to develop criteria with input from the CACs and NRC for evaluating any alternative treatment approaches. ACWA will have the CACs review a statement of task for the NRC before submitting. The NRC is expected to deliver a letter report for Pueblo in 10-12 months and a full report for Blue Grass in 18 months. Developing contingency criteria does not imply changes to current on-site hydrolysate treatment and allows for community input. New report offers sobering view of the energy transition
Every year the Statistical Review of World Energy offers a behemoth of data on the state of the global energy market. This year’s findings highlight the world’s insatiable demand for energy and the need to speed up the pace of decarbonisation.
Here are our four main takeaways from this year’s report:
Fossil fuel consumption — and emissions — are at record highs
Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time.
Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption.

- 1. Explosive Destruction System • Application: To treat and destroy Recovered Chemical Warfare Material (CWM) within the United States; owned and operated by the Project Manager for Non- Stockpile Chemical Materiel (PMNSCM) • The EDS is a trailer-mounted mobile system designed to destroy chemical munitions in a safe and environmentally sound manner • The heart and soul of the EDS is a sealed, stainless steel vessel that provides total containment of blast, vapor, liquids, and fragments • The EDS uses explosive cutting charges to access the munition and destroy its explosive components; the chemical content of the munition is then neutralized by a reagent appropriate to the type of agent present • Agent destruction is confirmed by sampling the residual liquid and air before reopening the vessel; process waste products are removed, packaged and shipped to an approved disposal facility for final disposition
- 2. Operators place the item in the munition holder. Linear-shaped charges are attached along the munition body and the item is placed in the advanced fragment suppression shield. Operators slide the item into the vessel. Operators remotely detonate the linear shaped charges to access the munition body and its chemical fill, while eliminating its explosive capacity. Once neutralization chemicals are added, the vessel is heated and rotated to mix the contents and neutralize the chemical fill. Liquid sample collected and analyzed. The vessel is closed and sealed. Next water rinse is added and rotated, drained, an air sample is collected and analyzed. When safe, door is opened and scrap metal is removed.
