Apostrophes

BY MARISSA VARGHESE
What is it?

 An apostrophe is a punctuation used to demonstrate
  possession.
 Its symbol: ‘
 An apostrophe may be used in words or at the end of
  words.
 Here you will learn how we use apostrophes in
  different ways.
In Singular Possessive Nouns

 With singular possessive nouns using words like cat,
kitchen, or book, you would place an apostrophe
with the word and end the word with an -s to show
  possession.
 EX: The cat’s fur kept it warm.
       Mom used the kitchen’s utensils.
I looked at the book’s cover.
In Plural Possessive Nouns

 With plural possessive nouns, you would simply add
an apostrophe after the -s to signify possession.

EX: The cows’ bells were tossed in the hay.
      Jeffery found the teachers’ room.
I pushed all the oranges’ peels away.
In Singular Proper Nouns

 With singular proper nouns, you would use the same
method you used for singular possessive nouns.

 EX: Kelly’s cat ran away.
 I borrowed Stephen’s sweater.
 Can you hand me Alex’s homework?
In Special Singular Proper Nouns

 With special singular proper nouns (proper nouns
that end in -s) or plural nouns that do not end in –s,
you may choose to add an apostrophe with another s.
 Or for the proper nouns, you may just add an
    apostrophe at the end.
 EX: Thomas’ face was plastered to the wall.
 Thomas’s face was plastered to the wall.
 The formulae’s solutions are on her website.
In Contractions

 In contractions, when you add the two words
together, you place an apostrophe where the letter is
left out of the two words.

 EX: Who’s out there?
 I wouldn’t buy it from him.
 That’s not mine!
