USING THE
APOSTROPHE
(')CORRECTLY
1. The apostrophe is used to show
belongingness or possession.
- to form the possessive, always add ‘s to all
singular words and to all plural words which
look like singulars
- to plural words that end with s, add just an
apostrophe
Example 1:
teacher’s, baby’s, Mrs. Luna’s
Example 2:
policemen’s, children’s
Example 3:
boys’, students’
2. The apostrophe is also used in place of
letters or figures which are omitted from
certain words to make them shorter.
Examples:
are not – aren’t
of the clock – o’clock
the class of 1982 – the class of ’82
I will – I’ll
Don’ts in Placing
the Apostrophe
1. Don’t place the apostrophe wherever you see a
final s. Make sure that the word shows
belongingness before you use an apostrophe.
Incorrect: Mother close’s her eyes as she prays.
Incorrect: She carries with her my book of prayers’.
2. Don’t slice off part of a name with an
apostrophe.
Incorrect: Miss Aileen Reye’s comes to class
early today.
3. Do not put an apostrophe before the final s
in a substitute word even though it shows
belongingness.
The following substitute words are
possessive without apostrophes: hers, his,
its, ours, theirs, and yours.
