The Cartesian Theory Of Mind
RenГ© Descartes was a French philosopher responsible for many ideas and theories still used in
the philosophical world today. He earned the nickname Father of modern philosophy for his work.
One of his most in depth and lasting legacies is his mind body dualism thesis also known as the
Cartesian theory of mind.
The Cartesian theory states that there are two different types of existence, physical and mental.
Whatever exists must fall into only one of these existences and they cannot be both. This could
be compared to the two faces of a coin, where when you flip a coin it has to be either heads or
tails, when looking at the world it is either in the physical world or the mental world. Another
example is how animals are either male or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So a body s life is a public affair, much like the lives of animals and plants.
Minds, however, are different from bodies. Minds are not in space, since they do not occupy
space like a body does. Minds are part of mental existence. The processes of the mind are not
subject to mechanical laws like bodies are. Also the workings of someone s minds are not able
to be witnessed by other people, like a human body is able to be. When you use your mind and
you think, imagine or feel an emotion, other people cannot see what is going on in your mind.
Since the workings of one s mind are not able to be observed, this makes the minds life a private
affair. This means that a person lives two lives. The first is what happens to his body and the
other is what happens in his mind. What happens to the body is in the physical world while
what happens in the mind is in the mental world (Ryle). The view that physical objects are in a
common field (space) and mental processes occur in a isolated field known as the mind, is the
ontological way, while the way that only our bodies can meet and we cannot interact with each
other s minds is the epistemological way. Gilbert Ryle sees that Descartes divides a person s life
into two halves, one being external and the other being internal. Every physical thing, including the
body, belong to the external half and physical world, while the

Katniss Fear Quotes
In the book The Hunger Games written in September 2009 by the author Suzanne Collins only
makes one character able to think in different ways right in the face of fear. The book was written
in september 2009. Katniss is one of the only characters who is able to see and act in facing fear.
Not all people fight or fly from fear: some people are able to think clearly in the face of fear.
Katniss feels fear, but she finds unusual and creative ways to fight back rather than run away. This
quote in the Hunger Games presents the idea that the Character Katniss Everdeen was scared her
behavior decided to react and drop the nest on the careers. Katniss wouldn t normally want to
hurt anyone but she was scared and made her react differently. Its now or never, I think, and begin
to saw. Blisters burst on my right hand as I awkwardly drag the knife back and forth ( Collins
187). This quote connects because Katniss was in a life or death situation and instead of trying to
run she was thinking in the face fear and dropped the nest even though she knew there would be
consequences.
Katniss has the ability to realize that it s not the boy from district she s mad at it s the capitol.

Catcher In The Rye Controversy
A Teen s Voice: The Authenticity of Catcher in the Rye Young adult books are hot in the writing
world and are the new trend of what people want to read. Teens and adults alike are drawn to
characters like Katniss Everdeen, Hazel Grace, and Jacob Portman; they seem real, they become
dear to us. Before this trend started, however, many people did not write for a young adultreader.
J.D. Salinger, on the other hand, wrote a very popular book for young adults called The Catcher
in the Rye. Salinger wrote this book in 1951 way before the new young adult book writing craze.
Many people are now saying that the main character of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden, is outdated.

As he s telling what he has experienced he is very truthful, even in his lies. Holden doesn t keep
anything to himself he says, I felt so lonesome all of a sudden, I almost wished I was dead (48).
Holden was just sitting in a quiet room thinking at this point. He doesn t just say this to get
sympathy. Holden says this because this is actually how he felt at that moment. The reader also
finds out the emotional truth at the end of the book when Holden shares that he is in a rest home.
When Holden says, this one psychoanalyst guy they have here, keeps asking me if I m going

Holden was telling the story the whole time to someone in the rest home. This is what many teens

Pros And Cons Of New Media
Old media like cassette tapes are becoming second tier goods since the public would like to listen
to music through social media feed or visit their favorite music site with a cup of coffee in hand.
The new media technology makes people s lives more convenient in favor of the old ways of
consuming the musictypes such as social platforms and specific applications. I spend most of my
time listening to music on my smartphone applications whereas my dad spends his time with his
old cassette tapes. In this essay, I will identify the notion of overcoming limits in both physical and
social aspects that new media give us.
Generally, Cassette tapes are a magnetic tool for recording and playback. Over the last decade,
cassette tapes still offer do it yourself musicians, who record their original music in tapes and
mail to companies. My dad loves the cassette tapes because he is a rock lover who firmly
believes that the cassette tapes have magic behind it. A lot of the music applications lack a
physical, tactile sensation and collection. However, he sees my music application, which
includes all the songs in the 1980s with lyrics and easy to find such as Spotify and Apple Music.
For example, one of my dad s bookshelf is full of the cassette tapes. It is hard to find a specific
song or album in short time and to get tangled up with tape afterward. I just type the name of the
song in the search engine, usually is a blank box at the very top. Then all the relative songs will

Why I Was The Only Person Who Was Ready
My thirteen year old mind could not handle waiting idly in an uncomfortable, wooden chair. By
that time, my powdered makeup had turned into beads of liquid. Can we please leave, I yelled
we re going to be late! In response to no response, I stood up from my chair and marched into my
cousin s room. I was startled as I walked in on one of the most frantic scenes I had ever
witnessed. There were clothes sprawled on the floor, makeup powder on the dresser and jewelry
on the bed. My cousins and aunts were running around the room; some were getting ready, some
were arguing and some were talking on the phone. The mixture of heat and expensive perfume
was asphyxiating. We re going to miss the trip tia ! I failed to understand why I was the only person
who was ready. We had all been aware of our reservations for the party boat in Old San Juanfor
almost a week.
We re almost ready Val, go start the car. Her response was almost humorous because I knew she
was nowhere near being ready. On her head, rested her shower cap and in the closet, hung her
dress. Respectfully, I continued to follow her orders and accept our inevitable lateness.
I was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February,4th, 1999. Since that day, I have come to the
conclusion that no one on the island is familiar with the concept of time. Puerto Ricans often
jokingly regard reoccurring tardiness as a common quality. Along with their skewed view of time,
they also seem to have an aversion to frugality. Unfortunately,

Democracy Was Not Suitable For Burma
From 1948 1962, the country existed as a democratic republic, but was largely dysfunctional as
there were continued insurgencies by different ethnic and political factions, such as the Red Flag
Communists, the White Flag Communists, the Thirty Comrades, the Revolutionary Burma Army,
and the Karen National Union. In 1962 General Ne Winand the Revolutionary Council led a
military Junta that seized control of the Government. They deposed of Prime Minister U Nu and
openly declared that Parliamentary democracy was not suitable for Burma. (Hoare 2015) The
highly superstitious and oppressive leadership of Ne Win can be observed in what was labeled The
Burmese Path to Socialism a guiding ethos to the government of the time that was largely
oppressive. The key tenants to this path included a totalitarian military rule, which gave no
freedoms to its people. Like many other communist dictatorships, it embraced an attitude of
authoritarian socialism, anti western sentiment, and anti intellectual fervor. In Beyond Rangoon we
bear witness to the story of Aung Ko, a University Professor who was fired for housing student
protestors, despite not being involved in any other way. (Boorman 1995) Anti intellectualism is a
key for oppressive regimes to retain power, as they must succeed in silencing all criticism and
dissent. More than just being anti western, the country adopted a militant Burmese nationalism that
led to a xenophobic exclusion of the other. This, some ways, was a relic

Essay on Telecommunications Act of 1996
The Telecommunications Act of 1996
The Telecommunications Act of 1996 can be termed as a major overhaul of the communications
law in the past sixty two years. The main aim of this Act is to enable any communications firm to
enter the market and compete against one another based on fair and just practices ( The
Telecommunications Act 1996, The Federal Communications Commission). This Act has the
potential to radically change the lives of the people in a number of different ways. For instance it
has affected the telephone services both local and long distance, cable programming and other video
services, broadcast services and services provided to schools. The Federal Communications
Commission has actively endorsed this Act and has worked ... Show more content on

Additional provisions include those giving families control of the television programming that
comes into their homes through the use of quot;V Chip quot; technology, and prevent undue
concentration in television and radio ownership so that a diversity of voices and viewpoints can
continue to flourish, through modified ownership limits ( Telecommunications Act of 1996,
Federal Communication Commission).
The response in the telecommunications market, soon after the Act was passed, was
tremendous. For one thing four of the seven Bell Regional Holding companies announced
mergers (as recommended and encouraged by the Act). Bell Atlantic acquired NYNEX, and
SBC acquired Pacific Telesis. As time went by more and more companies falling in the
jurisdiction of the Bell regional companies began to announce proposed mergers and followed
them through. It is important to note here that some of the mergers were among Bell companies
and local carriers e.g. Bell Atlantic and GTE, SBC and Ameritech (pending) and AT amp;T and
the video cable giant TCI. Some of these changes of course are a direct result of the changes in
the regulatory practices mentioned in the Act of 1996. The rest of them can only be called a
preparation of sorts for the competitive market environment to come in the near future if the Act of
1996 is fully realized by that time. This will not only increase

The Hostility Between Gene and Finny in A Separate Peace...
The Hostility Between Gene and Finny in A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Gene feels increasing hostility toward Finny before his fall from the tree. In the novel A
SEPARATE PEACE by John Knowles, the hostility between Gene and Finny increase because of
the competition inside of them both to be better then one another. It is about the increasing
competition between Gene and Finny and the hostility it brings. The hostility finally burst inside
Gene and for one instant it takes over. It makes him do something he will always regret. Gene s
increasing hostility towards Finny finally brings the down fall of their friendship.

Gene s envy increases to resentment of Finny making him do things he does not want to do. The
first resentment is when Finny manipulates
Gene into jumping out of the tree and into the water. The only reason he resents this is that it was
Fine s fault he was up in the tree. I (Gene) wouldn t have been on that darn limb except for him. I
wouldn t have turned around and so I lost my balance, if he hadn t been there. (25)
Gene blames Finny for him almost falling even though it wasn t really
Finny s fault. Gene is so envious of Finny that he does not want Finny to be one step better then
him for saving his life. He twists the truth to make it seem like it was Finny s fault for him
almost falling. Gene also resents the fact that Finny made up Blitzball around his physical
abilities. Finny adapted the game to his own physical abilities so he could excel at it. It made a
game of strength, endurance, and speed just what Finny s abilities were. Right from the start it
was clear that no one had ever been better adapted to sports than Finny was to Blitzball. (31) Gene
is envious of
Finny making up a game that he was going to be naturally good at so, in
Gene s mind, he can be better then him and make him look bad. His last resentment is of Finny

Hunter Thompson Essay
Of the two articles we were given to read this week from the day after September 11th, 2001, I
preferred the article from the New York Times. Though the article for ESPN by Hunter
Thompson (2001) was more engaging, I could not get past statements like, We are going to
punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard
to say (para. 9). Even though I am certainly in support of punishing those who are responsible for
attacks like the ones upon the world trade centers, but the vitriol with which Thompson describes
blowing them to smithereens made my stomach turn. As a result, I cannot say that I liked
Thompson s article. I can say that Thompson s article did a better job of keeping my attention. A
large portion of the New York Times reporting from Litsky and Williams (2001) was a listing of

Human beings have passed on knowledge throughout the ages in stories. There is a reason that
more people have probably read the Illiad than straight histories of the Trojan war; we like to
have a story to think about as opposed to a fact sheet to memorize. If you can incorporate thought
or fun along with facts, it can make the learning process easier. This is something we see and tend
to acknowledge more in children though it is truthful for adults as well. Daniel Willingham
(2004), a cognitive scientist, points out that research has shown [p]eople find material presented in
a story format more engaging than if it is presented in expository text no matter what the topic
(para. 5). Reporting in a narrative keeps the reader interested and this results in better retention of
information we were exposed to. More than likely, each of us could state more of the facts that

The Literary Analysis Of Cold Harbor By John Reekie
Throughout history, war has invariably been the solution to conflicts that arise between two
opposing sides of mankind. As Bertrand Russell puts it, War does not determine who is right
but who is left . The illustration, Cold Harbor by John Reekie, captures the aftermath of the
Civil War as African Americans pick up the deceased soldiers from the battlefield. Cold Harbor
is one of many pictures depicting the losses of the Civil War and, while it may evoke a part of
the disturbances caused by the Civil War, it can never help one mentally reconstruct what the
war was like. This picture aids in elucidating the fallacies of the Civil War by placing emphasis
on the massive death toll and the economic motives that resulted in the persistence of prejudiced
social constructs. The purpose of the illustration was to give an insightful eye into the aftermath
of the war including how it affected Americans. The document seems to create a memoir. Given
that things were posed in a specific way, it seems that the photo was intended to show the
original location and source of the bones. In the document, it shows a group of African
Americans picking up the remains of soldiers who died in the battle year before this. The
remains are of soldiers from a battle because of the uniforms the bodies are wearing. Through
showing the Americans the remains of the soldiers, it gives the war a sense of remorse and
meaning. By having the bodies all stacked on top of each other and the skulls of the

Chrysanthemums Essay
Chrysanthemums A good writer has many tools at hand that help them develop good story lines.
There are literary techniques such as voice, point of view, character, theme, and symbolism. One
very interesting technique is that of symbolism. With symbolism the author is able to write a story
in which many of the actions around the main characterseem to enhance the way the character
develops. The use of symbolism to develop the characters is easy to see in the short storythe
chrysanthemums by John Steinback. In this story Steinback writes of a woman who lives on a
farm; but the woman feels trapped, and wishes that she could free herself. The author uses both the
time of year and the location to develop a setting that compliments... Show more content on

The air was cold and tender. A light wind blew up from the southwest so that the farmers were
mildly hopeful of a good rain before long; but fog and rain do not go together. (Steinback 267)
From this line much may be derived about Elisa Smith s character. The quiet waiting symbolizes
how Elisa is silently waiting for something to happen. Elisa can not say much about her current
situation, she has to calmly weight for something to happen. This can be seen when her husband
jokes about her going to the fights with her. At the time she says nothing, because it would be
absurd for her to go with him. However, after she grows up at the end of the story she expresses
her interest to go with him. The symbol of the possibly of rain shows how Elisa anticipates that
something interesting in her life may happen, but deep down she knows that there is a very low
probability that anything would actually happen. Elisa s bath is another good symbol that
Steinback uses to develop Elisa s character. When she, scrubbed herself with a little block of
pumice. . . until her skin was scratched and red. (Steinback 273) she was scrubbing away the skin
that bound her into her conventional role. After this bath she had the courage to ask henry if they
could have wine at the dinner tonight, and that they may possibly go to the fights together. After
her bath she realized how strong she

La Fresne Social Status
This paper will focus on how nobility affects social status, opportunities and how it provides a
luxurious life to nobles. From La Fresne, I will study the fact that La Fresne s luxurious
possessions (blanket and fine ring), set her fate. Because of it she received an education and a
decent living, and eventually met her parents. If she didn t show signs of nobilityher life would have
turned out very differently, she could have been abandoned or worse. In Marie de France s Le
Fresne , a mother who is frightened of being misjudged seeks to abandon one of her twin
daughters, due to the fact that having twins hinted at the idea of infidelity. The mother
contemplates outrageous solutions to this problem, such as murder, but after sound advice from
her beloved maid, she decides against it, and together formulate a plan to get rid of one of her
daughters. They decide to abandon the child in a church so that she could be adopted and raised
by someone else. Before giving up her child, the mother wraps her baby in a lavish brocade that her
husband had brought back from the Crusadesand tied to it a fine ring. The maid leaves the child on
an ash tree around the church, where she was found and automatically assumed to be nobility. As

crusaders returned to Europe bringing with them stories, memorabilia, sacred relics, fine jewelry

Bose Sound Wave Speakers
Men s magazines are usually meant for young and middle aged men ranging from men in their
mid twenties to late forties. These magazines often feature ads related to alcohol, automobiles,
hunting, politics, scientific advances, technological breakthroughs, travel, dating etc. i.e. the
topics that appeal to men in particular. But nowadays advertisers have begun to change the way
they usually create an ad for a men s magazine. They are shifting focus from advertisements
which suit only men to advertisements suiting couples, as a vast majority of men who subscribe
to these magazines are married or in a relationship. Studies show people prefer to buy a product
which appeals to their significant other too more likely than a product that appeals to them
alone. The advertisement for Bose has created an image of a sound system which this attracts
both males and females alike. It makes sense, as whether in a foreign or domestic market;
advertisements like this would appeal to a large target audience. The target audiences for this
advertisement are married tech savvy men who would like to relax after a long day of work by
listening to some music on the internet and their not so tech savvy wives who still use CD s. In
this case both are equally happy to buy this product which is a win win for both of them. It is

Football Vs Basketball Research Paper
Both football and basketball are highly populated sports in the United States of America, however,
they have vast amounts differences in the style of play. There can be lots of comparing and
contrasting the two sporting events based on the history, how they are played, who plays them, and
any other similarities and differences about the two sports.
The history of basketball began in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by James Naismith, a
Canadian physical education instructor. Reason being is the fact basketball is a less injury prone
sport compared to football. The history of football started in the mid 18th century in Britain by
the Father of Football, Walter Camp. As time passed by, these sports became a thing at the
collegiate level, then followed by a professional level. Basketball proceeded from college to the ...

balls are shaped differently and used differently. In football, the ball is shaped like an egg in a
way, but with pointy edges. It s used to be thrown, kicked, and caught. However, a basketball is
in the shape of a sphere and is used to be passed around, dribbled, and shot. Another similarity
could be the shape of the field the events take place on. Both a basketball court and a football

Figurative Language In The Veldt
Through the entirety of The Veldt, the reader can tell that something is not right and that
something bad is going to happen. The reader can tell this because of the authors amazing use of
imagery, diction, and figurative language to foreshadow the end of the story. Throughout the story,
the author foreshadows the ending of the story by using imagery to describe Africa, carefully
using diction to give of an eerie feeling, and using figurative language in strange ways to describe
things. First, the author uses imagery to describe Africa and the horrors of it. In the text it says, so

Imagery In Those Winter Sundays, By Robert Hayden
Those Winter Sundays written by Robert Hayden, depicts the ungratefulness that a young boy
has towards his hardworking father. Later in the poem, as he matures, he begins to realize
everything his father has done for him, and his feelings suddenly change. Throughout the poem,
Hayden uses numerous examples of imagery, personification, and foreshadowing to show how
the speaker s attitude regarding his father transforms from the perspective of a child to the
perspective of an adult. At the beginning of the poem, it becomes apparent to the reader that the
poem takes on a very dull tone from the title itself. Those Winter Sundays shows that the poem is
gloomy and sad as opposed to summer days that are usually filled with brightness and warmth.
Early in the poem, Hayden uses examples of imagery to show the diligence and hard work of the
father. He states Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blue black
cold (Hayden 968). By using colors to describe the coldness of the house it allows to the reader
to create a lucid image of what it must feel like. Blue black cold suggests that inside the house it
is as cold as when someone s face or lips turn blue or black from the freezing weather. Another
example of the father s fine work ethic was Hayden s choice of the words Sundays too rather
than just saying On Sundays . Daniel Landau stated in an article In the book of genesis, Chapter
2, versus 2 and 3, it is written that he rested on the seventh day, and sanctified it (Landau). This
gives a clear idea of the fact that the father works every day of the week, even on Sundays, which
is usually a day that most people prefer to rest. By doing this, the reader can automatically
visualize the effort that the father puts into the well being of not only himself but his child as well.
As noted in an article by Laura Woltag, Connecting with texts through the study of literary devices
helps readers to deconstruct these texts. Literary devices provide a conceptual framework for
analysis that allows readers to interpret how these techniques affect their readings of texts (Woltag).
When reading a poem people should not read it to simply go through the motions, rather they
should read it and

written by Malcolm Gladwell and was published on April 5, 2005. Gladwell is known as out of
the one hundred most influential people to New York s, Time Magazine. Gladwell is a New York
journalist and author. Authoring four books that made an appearance on New York Times
bestsellers list, these books were, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference
(2000), Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), Outliers: The Story of Success
(2008), and What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009). All of the works he has created
touch a great deal on subjects such as psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology,
sociology, and relationships between people. I obtained this book from an app called, Audible,
where I listened to Gladwell narrates the book himself.
My book, Blink, is a book that s about snap judgments and it s about taking snap judgments
seriously. And it s not a book that says they re great and it s not a book that says they re terrible. It s
a book that says they are both. It can be really good and it can be really bad. And we need to
understand them on a very much more sophisticated level if we were to construct a better world for
ourselves. (Malcolm Gladwell, On Books Podcast) This was a quick explanation of what the book is
about from his professional point of view. In my explanation of the book, Blink is a book about snap

The National Football League ( Nfl )
The National Football League(NFL) is running one of its own games on the public, and as one the
most supported non profit organizations in American history. The NFL excels at tackling the
American taxpayer. It should be of no surprise that with its religious like following, the NFL
receives the same taxexempt status as a church, exempted under the IRS 501 (c)(6) code from
paying federal taxes. The legislation puts the NFL as a non profit trade association which it has
been under since 1942. This statement intends me to ask what Steve Almond asked in his book
Against Football: One Fan s Reluctant Manifesto how did this happen (Almond pg.81)? Imagine
driving through a city. The things you see around you are: average constructed schools, average
constructed houses, bumpy roads, and very old structured buildings. Oh but wait, in the middle
of the city you see a huge modern electrical sign on top of a huge modern structure saying The
Coca Cola Arena . At this minute you may ask, how can a very average sized constructed town
have one the most fascinating buildings in the world? This to me is very controversial and leads
me to agree with Steve Almonds claim that the NFL is an ideal model of crony capitalism and a
corporate oligarchy. let s try to answer the question why the heck the NFL is tax exempt. Business
leagues, chambers of commerce, real estate boards, boards of trade professional football leagues;
these are the five kinds of organizations that the IRS says can

Tourism Is A Tool Of Cultural Colonisation
Tourism should be considered a tool of cultural colonisation because it paints a way of life as a
national identity to be explored; this includes Maori customs as well as the relatively laid back
nature of New Zealanders. Travel guides date back to the 1830s and continue to be among the first
things foreigners peruse regarding a place they are visiting. Travel guides also exist as a snapshot
of the social context within which they were written. In 1959, New Zealandhad a Labour led
government and a population of 2,395,700 people. This government had a focus on maintaining this
clean, green image through tax increases on alcohol, cigarettes and petrol though it was not
explicitly for the purposes of tourism. This essay will explore the... Show more content on

According to Amoamo and Thompson, tourism strips Maori of the choice in how they represent
their own identity. This method of colonising Maori culture negatively impacts comfortable Maori
entertainers feel in expressing their identity and diminishes the authenticity of whatever experience
any tourists may want to experience.
Tourism is a tool of cultural colonisation as well as being a source of income for each country.
Margaret McClure wrote that tourism as an industry didn t thrive until the 1960 s because New
Zealanders at the time were possessive over their country and the Treasury didn t think the
industry could general national profits. Travel posters in the decade preceding the fifties
somewhat negate that notion. While McClure represents mid century New Zealanders as
snobbish guardians on the vista, Hardingham writes them as welcoming tourists who were happy
to share the country with foreigners. Acknowledging the different agendas behind advertising
and academia, the stark difference between these accounts of 1950 s New Zealanders is
interesting. McClure claims that the tourism industry picked up speed in the 1960 s before
becoming profitable in the 1980 s; therefore, it s possible that Hardingham s travel guide is a
product of Tourism Hotel Corporation. McClure commented that the New Zealand way of life in
the 1950 s, referring to shutting down over the weekends as well as strict liquor laws, was
restrictive and

The Transition From Art Nouveau To Art Deco
English Decorative Arts: The Transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco
Parallels can be seen running throughout the two movements and the following essay highlights the
similarities and differences within the two styles and the causes of the fall from one and the rise of
the other.
Art Nouveau was likewise strongly influenced by the Pre Raphaelite movement which contained
prominent artists such as Edward Burne Jones and John William Waterhouse (Meagher, 2017).
This romantic style exhibited a return to nature; common themes were leaves, flowers, tendrils,
and insects. Whiplash curves and flowing lines were prominently featured. Art Nouveau
portrayals of women were erotic and sensual and many images depicted nudes and these images
were originally shocking to the public (Hoffman, 2017) . Artists preferred a pallet of natural
colours with soft muted tones of browns, olive greens, blues, and mustard yellow (Marinica,
2017). Advertisers procured these images and adopted the style to produce posters and newspaper
advertisements promoting a variety of goods. The Czech artist Alphonse Mucha produced works of
this type ( Alphonse Maria Mucha Complete Works 2017 , 2017).
Artisans of the Aesthetic movement advocated art for art s sake and created works purely for
beauty and never for function (Easby, 2017). James Abbot McNeil Whistler the artist who painted
Whistlers Mother, was associated with this genre ( James Abbott McNeill Whistler 1834 1903 |
Tate , 2017).

Brain Symbolism
The symbolism of the heart being related to the brain I feel is very unlikely. Although studies have
shown that in recent research of the heart they have found little details on how they have
discovered little neutrons and protons and nerve cells that can relate to the brain making it more
believable that the heart is much more than just another organ. The heart does not only just pump
blood but they also think the heart can transplant memories from the donor s past experiences. The
symbolism of the heart is a tricky thing to describe and relate to the brainas the human body is more
complex than we could have ever thought. When it comes down to the emotions, feelings, and

Teens Committing Violent Crimes
According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention show that the number of
Juveniles arrested for committing a violent crime add up to 53,500 in 2014 alone. The crime rate of
kids committing violent crimes has gone down, but kids committing a crime is a problem. Some
people think that juveniles that commit murderor any other violent crimes that they should be
helped and rehabilitated. People also want to abolish sentencing juveniles to life in prison. All
Juveniles that commit violent crimes should be punished, therefore life in prison should not be
abolished for Juveniles who commit murder.
People have argued that the reason why teens commit crimes is because teen brains are not fully
developed. In Jennifer Jenkins article On Punishment and Teen Killers Jenkins emphasizes If brain
development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the world,
Jenkins clearly means that if this problem was caused because juveniles brains, then a lot ... Show

Life In The Iron-Mills By Rebecca Harding Davis
The short story Life in the Iron Mills by Rebecca Harding Davis is about a town that centers
around an iron mill and the workers whose lives revolve around the mill. At the beginning of the
story, this becomes evident when the narrator says, The mills were deserted on Sundays, except
by the hands who fed the fires, and those who had no lodgings and slept usually on the ash heaps
(1715). The only day that there are not workers at the iron mill is on Sunday because most of
Sunday is spent at church. In the short story, Davis begins to suggest that there are strong, spiritual
elements throughout the story. Most people who think about God believe that God and faith can
bring those who are struggling out of the dark cloud that seems to be encompassing their lives.
That is how Davis is trying to show the role of the church and trying to show that the people in the
iron mill town need... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Davis argues that the Spirit of God is needed to liberate the poor iron workers from their
depression. The church is supposed to be able to lift up those who need help. In so doing, the story
examines a system that was being developed and used in the mid nineteenth century in which
churches created an infrastructure within their existing spiritual framework to be proactive,
organized, and responsible for the economic welfare of the poor.
Wolfe s story reveals why the solution to the social problem methods of charity is still veiled. In
the time period the story took place, middle and upper class people always felt so great about
themselves when giving money to the poor because they thought they were helping charity cases .
Now, and probably back in the time of the iron mills

High fructose corn syrup is known to be a tasty and all around unhealthy sweetener that we human
consume. The inexpensive and readily obtainable sweetener has caused an epidemic obesity that
plagued the world shortly after it has been introduced worldwide at supermarkets. Considering that
HFCS is heavily processed in many foods as a substitute for table sugar, it is permeated into almost
every food we eat. Eating too much food containing HFCS may be good for our taste bud, but it
does not mean it is good for our body. The predominant sweetener leads to obesity because it has a
copious amount of sugar, metabolizes differently than any other sugar, and are nowadays falsely

Fructose can only be metabolized by the liver because only the liver has a transporter for it.
Whereas glucose can be metabolized by every cell in the body. Also, fructose goes through a
metabolic change that keeps your body from burning fat. This means that all fructose gets stored
in your fat cells and are then turned into fat. Moreover, fructose causes people to gain more
calories because they do not feel as if they are full. As Jacqueline states, As an increase in insulin
and leptin are associated with satiety, some researchers theorized that perhaps ingesting fructose
instead of glucose leads people to consume more calories because they do not get the right signals
to feel full (Jacques, n.d.). Insulin is a hormone that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.
Leptin is a hormone that will help regulate your appetite. A increase in insulin and leptin will
signal your body that you are full. Although, as you become resistant to the results of insulin and
leptin, you end up eating more. Nowadays many food are advertised to persuade the audience that
a certain brand or product is better in comparison to the others. HFCS for instance are usually
advertised as being healthy in comparison to regular sugar. This will grab many

Antivirus programs and Internet security programs are useful in protecting a computer or
programmable device / system from malware.
Such programs are used to detect and usually eliminate viruses. Anti virus software can be
purchased or downloaded via the internet. Care should be taken in selecting anti virus software, as
some programs are not as effective as others in finding and eliminating viruses or malware. Also,
when downloading anti virus software from the Internet, one should be cautious as some websites
say they are providing protection from viruses with their software, but are really trying to install
malware on your computer by disguising it as something else.

Diagnostic Imaging: A Sound Career in Sonography One of the main reasons for choosing a
healthcare career in todays society, aside from the basic need for a self sustaining income, is the
opportunity to make differences in peoples lives. With the demand for healthcare professionals and
alternative medicines on the rise, so is the need for adequately educated trained personnel.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to radiologic

field of sonography. The increasing demand for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic technology
promises an exceptional outlook for sonographers. The majority of diagnostic medical sonographers
are employed by hospitals, but accessibility to low cost portable ultrasound equipment has led to a
growing number of career opportunities at clinics and diagnostic centers (Rising Demand for
Diagnostic Medical Sonographers). They now have access to portable units as small as laptop
computers making commuting from hospital bedsides to clinical practices easier. Since some
sonographers make their own schedules through contracts with clinics, these portable units make

The Easter Vigil
For the Easter vigil I attended at the Ross Hall Chapel at 7:30 pm at the University of St. Mary
on Saturday, April 15th. Although this was my third time going to this chapel I still felt a little
lost how the Chapel did their services. From how the service was structured, to certain prayers I
felt overwhelmed with the many sacraments that were done that night. This time I prepared
myself to leave on time and reached the church ten minutes early. As I was heading to the chapel
area I saw many of the attendees walking out of the chapel. At first, I thought I was late, so I
asked if I the service had ended. They told me, no and they were heading to the front of the
building for the blessing of the fire. They said I could head into the chapel pick a seat, and then
meet with them at the front. So I entered the chapel picked up a booklet and headed to the front.

Saskatchewan s Needs Based Model
Considering the ultimate goal of each model is imperative to further understand another one of the
main differences between the approach to LD each province uses; the use of labels. Saskatchewan s
Needs based model argues that considering students individual needs to support them is more
important than using labels that categorize disabilities (Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, 2015).
In contrast, British Columbia continues to use categorical LD labels (designations) that classify
students needs and prescribe general services (British Columbia Ministry of Education, 2010).

After examination of alternative funding models, the province has created subcomponents of
instruction (base instruction, school based support, and supports for learning), where each
subcomponent allocates funding to each school board for specific expenses (Education Funding
Branch, 2017; Kozey Siegel, 2008). In terms of LD (intensive supports) funding, it is the supports
for learning subcomponent (SFL) that allocates funding for expenses related to LD support under
the needs based model, such as salary and non salary costs (Education Funding Branch, 2017).
Salary costs include teachers, professionals, consultants, while non salary costs refer to resources
such as assistive technology (Education Funding Branch, 2017). Since 2016, the SFL uses a rate
based approach and the funds in this subcomponent are meant to comprehend services for all
students, ensuring that they all receive high quality instruction, support and assessments (Education

Essay About Teenagers
I believe the children are the future are the words of the late Whitney Houston which many
heard while growing up. Teens are changing rapidly as a result of changes in society and other
changes. Few people want to speak to teens, but cannot do so anymore because most if not all
the teenagers think they are grown. The people the teens associate themselves with or even
spend time with is one the main reasons why they have been changing. Their friends contribute
greatly in the decision making aspect of their lives; they manage to do this in numerous ways.
The teens are now becoming reckless as they believe their friends are always right. This results in
them being out of control where parents and teachers are unable to steer them in the right path or
even talk to the teens. Teenagers are being involved in sexual activities and as a result, it has an
impact on their social behavior, their risk of STD s and the risk of pregnancy. Some of these teens
are very innocent but they love to follow their friends. Teenagers back in the days would be
solely focused on their school work and house work if they had any. Nowadays, it is much
different. As mentioned before, society has changed, and it has not changed for the best but the
worst. Teens would never talk back to their parents at a particular point in time, unfortunately,
that is what is trending now. How is it possible to disrespect the elders? Does that even make
sense? No, it does not, but the activities that they are indulging in are causing these actions. Teens
are sexually active as they are left loose and with no guidance as these parents are afraid to speak
to their children. Any teenager would be, not knowing what the outcome would be. It can be
noticed when these teens are involved in sexual activities as their manners, morals and self
esteem are gone. Little good morning is said, but only when they feel like it or if they think it is
necessary. Parents, teachers and some friends cannot even have a conversation with them as they
are ignorant and behave rambunctiously when spoken to. These activities allow teenagers to be
bold in the wrong way. Going to school with bite marks on them just to prove a point to their
friends is one of the ways in which this

place in the husbands home somewhere in the East Coast near Connecticut. As the husbandhas a

being blind. Upon their arrival, the husband notices how joyful and happy his wife is with
Robert and does not understand why. Inside the home, the husband and Robert had a few drinks

Theme Of War In A Farewell To Arms By Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Hemingway used his
experiences during war to write some of his most remarkable novels. It has been said that, No
American writer is more associated with writing about war in the early 20th century than Ernest
Hemingway. He experienced it firsthand, wrote dispatches from innumerable frontlines, and used
war as a backdrop for many of his most memorable works. (Putnam). Hemingway uses characters
from his stories, In A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls
, and The Sun Also Risesto show
the untold, unglamorous and unspoken of aspects of war and the effects it has on people, both
soldiers and bystanders. Hemingway wants his readers to know that war is not what people make
it out to be; that people should know that war is gritty instead of glamourous. That all injuries from
the war are not physical but mental and emotional as well. Hemingway shows his readers the
unspoken truths of war through his novels.
Most people talk of war in a heroic context, with the soldiers being fearless and brave, but this is
not always true. Hemingway shows this fact through his characters. In A Farewell to Arms,
Rinaldi exalts Lieutenant Henry s injured knee. He considers Henry a hero despite the fact that
Henry got hit by an artillery strike while eating, which is general considered not very heroic. Henry
s character shows that soldiers do every day things like eat, even though most do not think about it.

How Does Hill Create Sympathy For Arthur
Explore the ways in which Hill creates sympathy for Arthur as the hero of the Woman in Black
Key to the success of TWiB is Hill s expertise in encouraging the reader to identify with the main
character, Arthur Kipps. She achieves this by stimulating feelings of sympathy towards Arthur.
Some of the ways in which she does this are by using a variety of different methods such as a range
of structural devices, detailed descriptions of the setting, the central theme of fear and the change in
Arthur s character.
Perhaps the most effective way in which Hill creates sympathy is by vividly describing feelings of
anxiety, terror and emotional distress. The first hint of this comes within the first chapter when
Arthur is being pressed by his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is efficient in creating sympathy as it makes the reader feel closer to Arthur, like they are
getting a first hand account of events in Arthur s life.
Hill also employs retrospective narrative, whereby the story is told by the main character looking
back on events which occurred earlier in his life. The retrospective narrative commences at the very
end of the first chapter when Arthur went outside to calm himself after the anxiety caused by his
family s attempts to get him to tell his ghost story. After this he returns to the house and resolves
to write his story down After this holiday, when the family had all departed, and EsmГ© and I
were alone, I would begin to write my story . Although the remainder of the story is told
chronologically, Hill interrupts the narrative with comment on the younger Kipps experiences with
comment from the older, more experienced Arthur looking back on the events. For I see that then I
was still all in a state of innocence, but that innocence, once lost, is lost forever. This builds
sympathy by creating a sense of foreboding within the reader by hinting that the events to come
have a negative effect on Arthur s state of innocence. Combining retrospective narrative with the
series of terrifying events as discussed earlier, is an extremely effective way of building a
sympathetic relationship between the reader and the main character.

Abstract
The goal of this essay is to focus on theory and implementation of the Balanced Scorecard system.
Because of the structured generic approach of the methodology, the Balanced Scorecard has gained
its popularity as means of evaluating performance and reporting quantitative performance results.
The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in
business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business
activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external
communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals (The Balanced
Scorecard Institute, 2014). The Balanced Scorecard is the most prevalent and adopted of the several
strategic performance tools since the early 1990s. In addition, the derivatives of the Balanced
Scorecard such as Performance Prism and Results Based Management have also gained prominence
in the field of strategic performance management and improvement. The Balanced Scorecard
commenced as a performance management tool that incorporated strategic non financial
performance measures to the conventional financial indicators in order to provide managers and
company executives with a somewhat balanced view of the aspect of organizational performance.

The Pros And Cons Of College
Remember when you were little and you d fall on the trampoline and everyone would keep
jumping so you couldn t get back up? That s college. Unknown
College is said to provide individuals of a better career opportunity, secured job, and higher
paycheck. Every year, students all around globe debate on what college they want to attend, or if
they want to attend college at all. In the United States, only 65.9 percent of students, who has
graduated from high school the previous spring, had chose to enrolled into college (Norris, para.
2). So the question here is, if college is so great, why are the percent of participants so low? In this
paper, two universities, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville, will be compared by
their admission rates, prices, and student to faculty ratio.
In 2017, college admission rate dropped as low as 4.65% for the first time ever ( Admission
Statistic , par. 2). College is competitive even for those who are extremely intelligent. In the
University of Kentucky, admission rate is around 70 percent ( UK Acceptance Rate , par. 2).
The average composite score is roughly a 21, meaning that about 50 percent of test takers score
below a 21 (Ellen, par. 5). This college s requirement for ACT ranges from a 23 to a 28, according
to acceptancerate.com ( UK Acceptance Rate , par. 2). The GPA, following the admission rate and
ACT, is acceptable also. The essential GPA goes from 3.23 to 3.52, which

How The Film Industry Has A Huge Budget For The City Over...
PART 2 CIRCULAR ECONOMY
Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing Oscar Wilde, 1890
Again, my concern started with a personal experience. In 2014, I was working as an Experience
Designer for Universal Pictures NBC International Ltd. .
The film industry has a huge budget to spend on the building of visual artefacts. However, I was
quite shocked by the squandering of resources I witnessed. There was no care or awareness of
sustainability. Also, I expected designers and production to work much more closely together,
which would have prevented much waste in the first place. Yet, the film industry being as
hierarchical as it is, production never got back to me.
According to the London Data store,
London is already the third busiest city in filmmaking in the world, behind LA and New York. This
booming industry has brought ВЈ770m of investment to the city over the last four years.

I have always been fascinated by transforming materials into something magical. Yet most of the
time my task was to transform the very cheapest materials into a luxuriously looking illusion.
Obviously as a designer one aims to make the best of available resources in the most efficient
way. But ever working quicker and faster and thus taking a toll on quality, made me feel
uncomfortable. I felt trapped in a Kleenex society (source?) a disposable product which we buy,

Short Essay on Hamartiology God created a world free of sin and where we could co exist with
wild animals, the lion with the sheep eating side by side and with us, without fear. I want to start

happened when man (Adam) sinned against God; Adam disobeyed God by eating the fruit that
God had said not to eat. There is way s to see this problem of what we call evil, not sin since sin

Quantitative Research Design Critique Template
Quantitative studies usually focus on concepts that are fairly well developed, about which there is
an existing body of evidence, and for which there are reliable methods of measurement (Polit and

The type of question being addressed in the study is to the effectiveness of a multi factorial

Marketing the Water Taxis
I believe that the idea for water taxis in Miami could work. There are a few reasons for this
recommendation. The research has shown that the water taxi concept is profitable if the pricing
structure is left to the operators (Cook, Mahon McConney, 2007). The idea holds water when the
economics of the concept are fully studied. In general, however, these deal are executed on the
basis of public private partnerships, and that is something that has further implications for policy.
I believe that the big idea addresses both public and private stakeholders. In addition to the
potential customers, I believe that stakeholders include individuals who seek a wide range of
outcomes. Savas (2000) makes note of the role that public private partnerships often play in these
types of situations. Because the idea is tied up in the issue of public transportation, there are public
consequences, even if the business is entirely private. Often, such businesses are not private,
however, and this raises the specter of influence from local politicians. Usually, politicians from
nearby will favor a policy of water taxis but politicians from areas of the city or county not close to
the water will oppose the water taxi concept.
The target market will be mixed. Some of the target market will consist of those who re in town
temporarily, the tourist trade. By linking the cruise ship terminal with downtown Miami and South
Beach, the water taxi will deliver a service that the average visitor finds

How Music Has Impacted My Life Essay
Music has always played an important role in my life. Even as a student of film, I tell stories
inspired by song lyrics, for the words, rhythms, and instruments of rock music have impacted my
life to an unimaginable extent. Whenever I edit video, the underscore is vital. When I write a
script, there s a poetic sound, a lyricism to the dialogue. I would not even be here in Los Angeles
if not for artists such as Courtney Love and Jared Leto, who cross boundaries between music and
film. In particular, Jared Leto s career is something to behold. An award winning actor, director,
musician, and pure artist, Leto epitomizes my creative values: never settle, and don t be afraid to
be dedicated to whatever you want to do.
Origins
Born in Louisiana, Jared Leto attended University of the Arts in Philadelphia to pursue painting.
However, he eventually dropped out and studied acting in NYC. He then transitioned to California
to begin his career music ( Jared Leto: Biography ). His big break in acting came from the short
lived, yet critically lauded TV series, My So Called Life (1994). Four years later, he became lead
singer for his rock band, 30 Seconds to Mars. As the years progressed, Leto found success in both
artistic avenues.
Leto s last film of the 2000s, Mr. Nobody (2009), was met with critical accolades, but marked the
beginning of his hiatus from film. In 2013, Leto returned in full swing with his supporting role in
Dallas Buyer s Club (2013). A commercial and critical

Analysis Of Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury s theme in Fahrenheit 451 is that a hero is one who makes a change for the better
in society. In my rewritten version, my theme is that one who fails to change society is never a
hero. Before my essay begins, Montag is running from the police/government. His occupation as
a fireman is to incinerate books and he fails to do so by saving a couple of books before anyone
sees them. As he reads the books, he learns about the tragic endings which used to be real. He
wonders why the government had been hiding this from the citizens. Afterward, he starts taking
action about these truths and is revealed to the government. The chase is broadcasted on television

Montag never thought that what he saw would happen. The sharp bone had uprooted from the
skin of his back. He wanted to scream in pain, but his mouth wouldn t move. He wondered why
he was stuck in this horrible mess of blood and terror? He wanted to be alone, unfound,
untouched. As he lay there, paralyzed by the hands which held him, he saw out of the corner of
his eye a machine crawling out of the woods. The shining silver creature approached Montag and
the crowd of people who surrounded him. As soon as he saw the sharp glint of silver, he knew it
was the Hound. The metallic monster slid across the asphalt and the hands quickly went away
from Montag. He scrambled to his feet to flee from it, but the Hound was already chasing him
down. As each step passed, the distance between Montag and the Hound decreased. Suddenly,
the Hound leapt through the air and pushed Montag to the ground. He rolled across the gravel
and tried to stand before his pursuer. But before Montag could even try to push himself up, the
agonizing blade of the Hound s needle sunk into Montag s chest. Terrifying shrieks filled the air
as dark blood trickled down his body. He lay on the road, worn down, the blood staining his
clothes, creating a stream down the road. He thought of his life, why he hadn t realized what
horrible acts he had committed. He thought why he had to be a fireman. He thought why was
there no good in this world. He lay there waiting for his final seconds to quickly pass. Farewell,

Public Key Infrastructures
Businesses are becoming ever more dependent on digital information and electronic transactions,
and as a result face stringent data privacy compliance challenges and data security regulations.
With the enterprise increasingly under threat of cyber attacks and malicious insiders, business
applications and networks are now dependent on the use of digital credentials to control how
users and entities access sensitive data and critical system resources. Public key infrastructures
(PKIs) are necessary to help ascertain the identity of different people, devices, and services. In a
nutshell, PKIs go way beyond the use of user IDs and passwords, employing cryptographic
technologies such as digital signatures and digital certificates to create unique credentials that can

Pros And Cons Of Plastic Water Bottles
United States is the leading country on a global scale that produces and consumes millions of
gallons of water annually. Oil, a limited and expensive resource, is used in the process of creating
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic water bottles which is generally regarded as a safe and
recyclable packaging material. (Palliser, 2010) The process of manufacturing bottled waterto meet
the United Statesdemand uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually. (Ban the Bottle, 2014)
The following examples will help to visualize how much of valuable, natural resources are used:

plastic bottles is antimony that is harmless in small doses but in larger doses can cause nausea,

  • 2. The Cartesian Theory Of Mind RenГ© Descartes was a French philosopher responsible for many ideas and theories still used in the philosophical world today. He earned the nickname Father of modern philosophy for his work. One of his most in depth and lasting legacies is his mind body dualism thesis also known as the Cartesian theory of mind. The Cartesian theory states that there are two different types of existence, physical and mental. Whatever exists must fall into only one of these existences and they cannot be both. This could be compared to the two faces of a coin, where when you flip a coin it has to be either heads or tails, when looking at the world it is either in the physical world or the mental world. Another example is how animals are either male or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So a body s life is a public affair, much like the lives of animals and plants. Minds, however, are different from bodies. Minds are not in space, since they do not occupy space like a body does. Minds are part of mental existence. The processes of the mind are not subject to mechanical laws like bodies are. Also the workings of someone s minds are not able to be witnessed by other people, like a human body is able to be. When you use your mind and you think, imagine or feel an emotion, other people cannot see what is going on in your mind. Since the workings of one s mind are not able to be observed, this makes the minds life a private affair. This means that a person lives two lives. The first is what happens to his body and the other is what happens in his mind. What happens to the body is in the physical world while what happens in the mind is in the mental world (Ryle). The view that physical objects are in a common field (space) and mental processes occur in a isolated field known as the mind, is the ontological way, while the way that only our bodies can meet and we cannot interact with each other s minds is the epistemological way. Gilbert Ryle sees that Descartes divides a person s life into two halves, one being external and the other being internal. Every physical thing, including the body, belong to the external half and physical world, while the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Katniss Fear Quotes In the book The Hunger Games written in September 2009 by the author Suzanne Collins only makes one character able to think in different ways right in the face of fear. The book was written in september 2009. Katniss is one of the only characters who is able to see and act in facing fear. Not all people fight or fly from fear: some people are able to think clearly in the face of fear. Katniss feels fear, but she finds unusual and creative ways to fight back rather than run away. This quote in the Hunger Games presents the idea that the Character Katniss Everdeen was scared her behavior decided to react and drop the nest on the careers. Katniss wouldn t normally want to hurt anyone but she was scared and made her react differently. Its now or never, I think, and begin to saw. Blisters burst on my right hand as I awkwardly drag the knife back and forth ( Collins 187). This quote connects because Katniss was in a life or death situation and instead of trying to run she was thinking in the face fear and dropped the nest even though she knew there would be consequences. Katniss has the ability to realize that it s not the boy from district she s mad at it s the capitol. This quote in the Hunger Games presents the idea that Katniss wouldn t normally shoot a ... • 4. Catcher In The Rye Controversy A Teen s Voice: The Authenticity of Catcher in the Rye Young adult books are hot in the writing world and are the new trend of what people want to read. Teens and adults alike are drawn to characters like Katniss Everdeen, Hazel Grace, and Jacob Portman; they seem real, they become dear to us. Before this trend started, however, many people did not write for a young adultreader. J.D. Salinger, on the other hand, wrote a very popular book for young adults called The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger wrote this book in 1951 way before the new young adult book writing craze. Many people are now saying that the main character of The Catcher in the Rye, Holden, is outdated. Can young adults not relate with Holden anymore because this book was written... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As he s telling what he has experienced he is very truthful, even in his lies. Holden doesn t keep anything to himself he says, I felt so lonesome all of a sudden, I almost wished I was dead (48). Holden was just sitting in a quiet room thinking at this point. He doesn t just say this to get sympathy. Holden says this because this is actually how he felt at that moment. The reader also finds out the emotional truth at the end of the book when Holden shares that he is in a rest home. When Holden says, this one psychoanalyst guy they have here, keeps asking me if I m going apply myself when I go back to school next September (114) it opens up the eyes to the reader that Holden was telling the story the whole time to someone in the rest home. This is what many teens go to when they are emitted to holmes for help with their mental stability. Holden Caulfield is an authentic teenage character that many teens can relate ... • 5. Pros And Cons Of New Media Old media like cassette tapes are becoming second tier goods since the public would like to listen to music through social media feed or visit their favorite music site with a cup of coffee in hand. The new media technology makes people s lives more convenient in favor of the old ways of consuming the musictypes such as social platforms and specific applications. I spend most of my time listening to music on my smartphone applications whereas my dad spends his time with his old cassette tapes. In this essay, I will identify the notion of overcoming limits in both physical and social aspects that new media give us. Generally, Cassette tapes are a magnetic tool for recording and playback. Over the last decade, cassette tapes still offer do it yourself musicians, who record their original music in tapes and mail to companies. My dad loves the cassette tapes because he is a rock lover who firmly believes that the cassette tapes have magic behind it. A lot of the music applications lack a physical, tactile sensation and collection. However, he sees my music application, which includes all the songs in the 1980s with lyrics and easy to find such as Spotify and Apple Music. For example, one of my dad s bookshelf is full of the cassette tapes. It is hard to find a specific song or album in short time and to get tangled up with tape afterward. I just type the name of the song in the search engine, usually is a blank box at the very top. Then all the relative songs will form a list ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Why I Was The Only Person Who Was Ready My thirteen year old mind could not handle waiting idly in an uncomfortable, wooden chair. By that time, my powdered makeup had turned into beads of liquid. Can we please leave, I yelled we re going to be late! In response to no response, I stood up from my chair and marched into my cousin s room. I was startled as I walked in on one of the most frantic scenes I had ever witnessed. There were clothes sprawled on the floor, makeup powder on the dresser and jewelry on the bed. My cousins and aunts were running around the room; some were getting ready, some were arguing and some were talking on the phone. The mixture of heat and expensive perfume was asphyxiating. We re going to miss the trip tia ! I failed to understand why I was the only person who was ready. We had all been aware of our reservations for the party boat in Old San Juanfor almost a week. We re almost ready Val, go start the car. Her response was almost humorous because I knew she was nowhere near being ready. On her head, rested her shower cap and in the closet, hung her dress. Respectfully, I continued to follow her orders and accept our inevitable lateness. I was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on February,4th, 1999. Since that day, I have come to the conclusion that no one on the island is familiar with the concept of time. Puerto Ricans often jokingly regard reoccurring tardiness as a common quality. Along with their skewed view of time, they also seem to have an aversion to frugality. Unfortunately, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Democracy Was Not Suitable For Burma From 1948 1962, the country existed as a democratic republic, but was largely dysfunctional as there were continued insurgencies by different ethnic and political factions, such as the Red Flag Communists, the White Flag Communists, the Thirty Comrades, the Revolutionary Burma Army, and the Karen National Union. In 1962 General Ne Winand the Revolutionary Council led a military Junta that seized control of the Government. They deposed of Prime Minister U Nu and openly declared that Parliamentary democracy was not suitable for Burma. (Hoare 2015) The highly superstitious and oppressive leadership of Ne Win can be observed in what was labeled The Burmese Path to Socialism a guiding ethos to the government of the time that was largely oppressive. The key tenants to this path included a totalitarian military rule, which gave no freedoms to its people. Like many other communist dictatorships, it embraced an attitude of authoritarian socialism, anti western sentiment, and anti intellectual fervor. In Beyond Rangoon we bear witness to the story of Aung Ko, a University Professor who was fired for housing student protestors, despite not being involved in any other way. (Boorman 1995) Anti intellectualism is a key for oppressive regimes to retain power, as they must succeed in silencing all criticism and dissent. More than just being anti western, the country adopted a militant Burmese nationalism that led to a xenophobic exclusion of the other. This, some ways, was a relic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Essay on Telecommunications Act of 1996 The Telecommunications Act of 1996 The Telecommunications Act of 1996 can be termed as a major overhaul of the communications law in the past sixty two years. The main aim of this Act is to enable any communications firm to enter the market and compete against one another based on fair and just practices ( The Telecommunications Act 1996, The Federal Communications Commission). This Act has the potential to radically change the lives of the people in a number of different ways. For instance it has affected the telephone services both local and long distance, cable programming and other video services, broadcast services and services provided to schools. The Federal Communications Commission has actively endorsed this Act and has worked ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additional provisions include those giving families control of the television programming that comes into their homes through the use of quot;V Chip quot; technology, and prevent undue concentration in television and radio ownership so that a diversity of voices and viewpoints can continue to flourish, through modified ownership limits ( Telecommunications Act of 1996, Federal Communication Commission). The response in the telecommunications market, soon after the Act was passed, was tremendous. For one thing four of the seven Bell Regional Holding companies announced mergers (as recommended and encouraged by the Act). Bell Atlantic acquired NYNEX, and SBC acquired Pacific Telesis. As time went by more and more companies falling in the jurisdiction of the Bell regional companies began to announce proposed mergers and followed them through. It is important to note here that some of the mergers were among Bell companies and local carriers e.g. Bell Atlantic and GTE, SBC and Ameritech (pending) and AT amp;T and the video cable giant TCI. Some of these changes of course are a direct result of the changes in the regulatory practices mentioned in the Act of 1996. The rest of them can only be called a preparation of sorts for the competitive market environment to come in the near future if the Act of 1996 is fully realized by that time. This will not only increase ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Though the article for ESPN by Hunter Thompson (2001) was more engaging, I could not get past statements like, We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say (para. 9). • 13. The Literary Analysis Of Cold Harbor By John Reekie Throughout history, war has invariably been the solution to conflicts that arise between two opposing sides of mankind. As Bertrand Russell puts it, War does not determine who is right but who is left . The illustration, Cold Harbor by John Reekie, captures the aftermath of the Civil War as African Americans pick up the deceased soldiers from the battlefield. Cold Harbor is one of many pictures depicting the losses of the Civil War and, while it may evoke a part of the disturbances caused by the Civil War, it can never help one mentally reconstruct what the war was like. This picture aids in elucidating the fallacies of the Civil War by placing emphasis on the massive death toll and the economic motives that resulted in the persistence of prejudiced social constructs. The purpose of the illustration was to give an insightful eye into the aftermath of the war including how it affected Americans. The document seems to create a memoir. Given that things were posed in a specific way, it seems that the photo was intended to show the original location and source of the bones. In the document, it shows a group of African Americans picking up the remains of soldiers who died in the battle year before this. The remains are of soldiers from a battle because of the uniforms the bodies are wearing. Through showing the Americans the remains of the soldiers, it gives the war a sense of remorse and meaning. There are literary techniques such as voice, point of view, character, theme, and symbolism. One very interesting technique is that of symbolism. With symbolism the author is able to write a story in which many of the actions around the main characterseem to enhance the way the character develops. The use of symbolism to develop the characters is easy to see in the short storythe chrysanthemums by John Steinback. In this story Steinback writes of a woman who lives on a farm; but the woman feels trapped, and wishes that she could free herself. A light wind blew up from the southwest so that the farmers were mildly hopeful of a good rain before long; but fog and rain do not go together. (Steinback 267) From this line much may be derived about Elisa Smith s character. The quiet waiting symbolizes how Elisa is silently waiting for something to happen. Elisa can not say much about her current situation, she has to calmly weight for something to happen. This can be seen when her husband jokes about her going to the fights with her. At the time she says nothing, because it would be absurd for her to go with him. However, after she grows up at the end of the story she expresses her interest to go with him. The symbol of the possibly of rain shows how Elisa anticipates that something interesting in her life may happen, but deep down she knows that there is a very low probability that anything would actually happen. Elisa s bath is another good symbol that Steinback uses to develop Elisa s character. When she, scrubbed herself with a little block of pumice. . . until her skin was scratched and red. The history of basketball began in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by James Naismith, a Canadian physical education instructor. • 20. Imagery In Those Winter Sundays, By Robert Hayden Those Winter Sundays written by Robert Hayden, depicts the ungratefulness that a young boy has towards his hardworking father. Later in the poem, as he matures, he begins to realize everything his father has done for him, and his feelings suddenly change. Throughout the poem, Hayden uses numerous examples of imagery, personification, and foreshadowing to show how the speaker s attitude regarding his father transforms from the perspective of a child to the perspective of an adult. At the beginning of the poem, it becomes apparent to the reader that the poem takes on a very dull tone from the title itself. Those Winter Sundays shows that the poem is gloomy and sad as opposed to summer days that are usually filled with brightness and warmth. Early in the poem, Hayden uses examples of imagery to show the diligence and hard work of the father. He states Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blue black cold (Hayden 968). By using colors to describe the coldness of the house it allows to the reader to create a lucid image of what it must feel like. Blue black cold suggests that inside the house it is as cold as when someone s face or lips turn blue or black from the freezing weather. Another example of the father s fine work ethic was Hayden s choice of the words Sundays too rather than just saying On Sundays . Daniel Landau stated in an article In the book of genesis, Chapter 2, versus 2 and 3, it is written that he rested on the seventh day, and sanctified it (Landau). This gives a clear idea of the fact that the father works every day of the week, even on Sundays, which is usually a day that most people prefer to rest. By doing this, the reader can automatically visualize the effort that the father puts into the well being of not only himself but his child as well. As noted in an article by Laura Woltag, Connecting with texts through the study of literary devices helps readers to deconstruct these texts. Literary devices provide a conceptual framework for analysis that allows readers to interpret how these techniques affect their readings of texts (Woltag). The Transition From Art Nouveau To Art Deco English Decorative Arts: The Transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco Parallels can be seen running throughout the two movements and the following essay highlights the similarities and differences within the two styles and the causes of the fall from one and the rise of the other. Art Nouveau was likewise strongly influenced by the Pre Raphaelite movement which contained prominent artists such as Edward Burne Jones and John William Waterhouse (Meagher, 2017). This romantic style exhibited a return to nature; common themes were leaves, flowers, tendrils, and insects. Whiplash curves and flowing lines were prominently featured. Art Nouveau portrayals of women were erotic and sensual and many images depicted nudes and these images were originally shocking to the public (Hoffman, 2017) . Artists preferred a pallet of natural colours with soft muted tones of browns, olive greens, blues, and mustard yellow (Marinica, 2017). Advertisers procured these images and adopted the style to produce posters and newspaper advertisements promoting a variety of goods. The Czech artist Alphonse Mucha produced works of this type ( Alphonse Maria Mucha Complete Works 2017 , 2017). Artisans of the Aesthetic movement advocated art for art s sake and created works purely for beauty and never for function (Easby, 2017). Although this was my third time going to this chapel I still felt a little lost how the Chapel did their services. From how the service was structured, to certain prayers I felt overwhelmed with the many sacraments that were done that night. This time I prepared myself to leave on time and reached the church ten minutes early. As I was heading to the chapel area I saw many of the attendees walking out of the chapel. At first, I thought I was late, so I asked if I the service had ended. They told me, no and they were heading to the front of the building for the blessing of the fire. Saskatchewan s Needs Based Model Considering the ultimate goal of each model is imperative to further understand another one of the main differences between the approach to LD each province uses; the use of labels. Saskatchewan s Needs based model argues that considering students individual needs to support them is more important than using labels that categorize disabilities (Saskatchewan Ministry of Education, 2015). • 36. Essay About Teenagers I believe the children are the future are the words of the late Whitney Houston which many heard while growing up. Teens are changing rapidly as a result of changes in society and other changes. Few people want to speak to teens, but cannot do so anymore because most if not all the teenagers think they are grown. The people the teens associate themselves with or even spend time with is one the main reasons why they have been changing. Their friends contribute greatly in the decision making aspect of their lives; they manage to do this in numerous ways. The teens are now becoming reckless as they believe their friends are always right. This results in them being out of control where parents and teachers are unable to steer them in the right path or even talk to the teens. Teenagers are being involved in sexual activities and as a result, it has an impact on their social behavior, their risk of STD s and the risk of pregnancy. Some of these teens are very innocent but they love to follow their friends. Teenagers back in the days would be solely focused on their school work and house work if they had any. Nowadays, it is much different. As mentioned before, society has changed, and it has not changed for the best but the worst. Teens would never talk back to their parents at a particular point in time, unfortunately, that is what is trending now. How is it possible to disrespect the elders? Does that even make sense? No, it does not, but the activities that they are indulging in are causing these actions. Teens are sexually active as they are left loose and with no guidance as these parents are afraid to speak to their children. Any teenager would be, not knowing what the outcome would be. It can be noticed when these teens are involved in sexual activities as their manners, morals and self esteem are gone. Little good morning is said, but only when they feel like it or if they think it is necessary. Parents, teachers and some friends cannot even have a conversation with them as they are ignorant and behave rambunctiously when spoken to. These activities allow teenagers to be bold in the wrong way. Going to school with bite marks on them just to prove a point to their friends is one of the ways in which this ... Hemingway used his experiences during war to write some of his most remarkable novels. It has been said that, No American writer is more associated with writing about war in the early 20th century than Ernest Hemingway. He experienced it firsthand, wrote dispatches from innumerable frontlines, and used war as a backdrop for many of his most memorable works. (Putnam). Hemingway uses characters from his stories, In A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls , and The Sun Also Risesto show the untold, unglamorous and unspoken of aspects of war and the effects it has on people, both soldiers and bystanders. Hemingway wants his readers to know that war is not what people make it out to be; that people should know that war is gritty instead of glamourous. That all injuries from the war are not physical but mental and emotional as well. Hemingway shows his readers the unspoken truths of war through his novels. Most people talk of war in a heroic context, with the soldiers being fearless and brave, but this is not always true. Hemingway shows this fact through his characters. In A Farewell to Arms, Rinaldi exalts Lieutenant Henry s injured knee. He considers Henry a hero despite the fact that Henry got hit by an artillery strike while eating, which is general considered not very heroic. Henry s character shows that soldiers do every day things like eat, even though most do not think about it. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is efficient in creating sympathy as it makes the reader feel closer to Arthur, like they are getting a first hand account of events in Arthur s life. Hill also employs retrospective narrative, whereby the story is told by the main character looking back on events which occurred earlier in his life. The retrospective narrative commences at the very end of the first chapter when Arthur went outside to calm himself after the anxiety caused by his family s attempts to get him to tell his ghost story. After this he returns to the house and resolves to write his story down After this holiday, when the family had all departed, and EsmГ© and I were alone, I would begin to write my story . This builds sympathy by creating a sense of foreboding within the reader by hinting that the events to come have a negative effect on Arthur s state of innocence. The work takes us out of the realm of environmental devastation to include cultural legacies and entwines them within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Quantitative Research Design Critique Template NU310_Unit 5 Quantitative Research Design Critique Template Quantitative studies usually focus on concepts that are fairly well developed, about which there is an existing body of evidence, and for which there are reliable methods of measurement (Polit and Beck, 2012). I chose the Quantitative method of data collection for my research, because I want to determine the effective of regular instruction, face to face training, and follow up on inhalation techniques in increasing treatment adherence in patients with COPD Critique Study: Efficacy of a multifactorial intervention on therapeutic adherence in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): a randomized controlled trial 1.What type of question (therapy, prognosis, etc.) is being addressed? Does the research question concern a possible causal relationship between the independent and dependent variables? The type of question being addressed in the study is to the effectiveness of a multi factorial intervention on therapeutic adherence. The aim of the study is to determine the causal connection between the effectiveness of multi factorial intervention and therapeutic adherence in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 2.What would be the strongest design for the research question? How does this compare to the design actually used? The design of the study was randomised controlled trial. The 146 patient with COPD were divided in two groups using the randomisation techniques. • 51. Marketing the Water Taxis I believe that the idea for water taxis in Miami could work. There are a few reasons for this recommendation. The research has shown that the water taxi concept is profitable if the pricing structure is left to the operators (Cook, Mahon McConney, 2007). The idea holds water when the economics of the concept are fully studied. In general, however, these deal are executed on the basis of public private partnerships, and that is something that has further implications for policy. I believe that the big idea addresses both public and private stakeholders. In addition to the potential customers, I believe that stakeholders include individuals who seek a wide range of outcomes. Savas (2000) makes note of the role that public private partnerships often play in these types of situations. Because the idea is tied up in the issue of public transportation, there are public consequences, even if the business is entirely private. Often, such businesses are not private, however, and this raises the specter of influence from local politicians. Usually, politicians from nearby will favor a policy of water taxis but politicians from areas of the city or county not close to the water will oppose the water taxi concept. The target market will be mixed. Some of the target market will consist of those who re in town temporarily, the tourist trade. By linking the cruise ship terminal with downtown Miami and South Beach, the water taxi will deliver a service that the average visitor finds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. How Music Has Impacted My Life Essay Music has always played an important role in my life. Even as a student of film, I tell stories inspired by song lyrics, for the words, rhythms, and instruments of rock music have impacted my life to an unimaginable extent. Whenever I edit video, the underscore is vital. When I write a script, there s a poetic sound, a lyricism to the dialogue. I would not even be here in Los Angeles if not for artists such as Courtney Love and Jared Leto, who cross boundaries between music and film. In particular, Jared Leto s career is something to behold. An award winning actor, director, musician, and pure artist, Leto epitomizes my creative values: never settle, and don t be afraid to be dedicated to whatever you want to do. Origins Born in Louisiana, Jared Leto attended University of the Arts in Philadelphia to pursue painting. However, he eventually dropped out and studied acting in NYC. He then transitioned to California to begin his career music ( Jared Leto: Biography ). His big break in acting came from the short lived, yet critically lauded TV series, My So Called Life (1994). Four years later, he became lead singer for his rock band, 30 Seconds to Mars. As the years progressed, Leto found success in both artistic avenues. Leto s last film of the 2000s, Mr. Nobody (2009), was met with critical accolades, but marked the beginning of his hiatus from film. In 2013, Leto returned in full swing with his supporting role in Dallas Buyer s Club (2013). A commercial and critical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Analysis Of Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury s theme in Fahrenheit 451 is that a hero is one who makes a change for the better in society. In my rewritten version, my theme is that one who fails to change society is never a hero. Before my essay begins, Montag is running from the police/government. His occupation as a fireman is to incinerate books and he fails to do so by saving a couple of books before anyone sees them. As he reads the books, he learns about the tragic endings which used to be real. He wonders why the government had been hiding this from the citizens. Afterward, he starts taking action about these truths and is revealed to the government. The chase is broadcasted on television and viewers are urged to open their doors to look for Montag. At the count... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Montag never thought that what he saw would happen. The sharp bone had uprooted from the skin of his back. He wanted to scream in pain, but his mouth wouldn t move. He wondered why he was stuck in this horrible mess of blood and terror? He wanted to be alone, unfound, untouched. As he lay there, paralyzed by the hands which held him, he saw out of the corner of his eye a machine crawling out of the woods. The shining silver creature approached Montag and the crowd of people who surrounded him. As soon as he saw the sharp glint of silver, he knew it was the Hound. The metallic monster slid across the asphalt and the hands quickly went away from Montag. He scrambled to his feet to flee from it, but the Hound was already chasing him down. As each step passed, the distance between Montag and the Hound decreased. Suddenly, the Hound leapt through the air and pushed Montag to the ground. He rolled across the gravel and tried to stand before his pursuer. But before Montag could even try to push himself up, the agonizing blade of the Hound s needle sunk into Montag s chest. Terrifying shrieks filled the air as dark blood trickled down his body. He lay on the road, worn down, the blood staining his clothes, creating a stream down the road. He thought of his life, why he hadn t realized what horrible acts he had committed. He thought why he had to be a fireman. He thought why was there no good in this world. He lay there waiting for his final seconds to quickly pass. Farewell, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Public Key Infrastructures Businesses are becoming ever more dependent on digital information and electronic transactions, and as a result face stringent data privacy compliance challenges and data security regulations. With the enterprise increasingly under threat of cyber attacks and malicious insiders, business applications and networks are now dependent on the use of digital credentials to control how users and entities access sensitive data and critical system resources. Public key infrastructures (PKIs) are necessary to help ascertain the identity of different people, devices, and services. In a nutshell, PKIs go way beyond the use of user IDs and passwords, employing cryptographic technologies such as digital signatures and digital certificates to create unique credentials that can be validated beyond reasonable doubt and on a mass scale ( What is pki? n.d., p. 1).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Third parties normally trust digital certificates signed by public CAs like VeriSign, and SecureNet. Additionally, the overhead of managing a public CA is significantly lower than that of in house administration. Another advantage of using a public CA is convenience; it solves the problem of distributing the key for certificates. Using Public CA can be cost effective particularly if company has a large number of private users that need public certificates for client authentication. Like with in house CA, there are several disadvantages to public CA. The integration between your organization and the public CA is limited. While the overhead is lower than in house CA, there is still a cost associated with using one and you will usually pay per certificate. There is also less flexibility in managing those certificates as it is being handled by an outside entity. Which one is better suited for the company could depend on the size of the company, it funding and staffing ( Comparisons, n.d., p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Pros And Cons Of Plastic Water Bottles United States is the leading country on a global scale that produces and consumes millions of gallons of water annually. Oil, a limited and expensive resource, is used in the process of creating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic water bottles which is generally regarded as a safe and recyclable packaging material. (Palliser, 2010) The process of manufacturing bottled waterto meet the United Statesdemand uses more than 17 million barrels of oil annually. (Ban the Bottle, 2014) The following examples will help to visualize how much of valuable, natural resources are used: in a year, the energy used to produce bottled water is enough to power 190,000 homes and the millions of barrels of oil used is enough to fuel 1.3 million cars. According to a four year, detailed investigation to evaluate the quality and safety of bottled water conducted by an environmental advocacy group, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), traces of various chemicals (THMs such as chloroform and BDCM, both probable human carcinogens) and arsenic were discovered in high levels. Another chemical found in PET plastic bottles is antimony that is harmless in small doses but in larger doses can cause nausea, vomiting, and death. (Ban the Bottle, 2014) A senior scientist at the NRDC, Dr. Gina Solomon told The New York Times that there is no reason to believe that bottled water is safer than tap water. (Ban the Bottle, 2014) Public water in the U.S. is heavily regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because they require numerous tests for bacteria daily which are available to the public. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled water and only require tests on a weekly basis and does not share their discoveries with neither the public nor EPA. (Ban the Bottle, ...
