6. Direct Quote:
… Physical activity regulation for children vary by states. For example,
in “New York City, providers’ compliance with implementing daily
physical activities was high (87.2%) according to director and teacher
report.” (O’Neill, Sowda, Benjamin Neelon & Pate, 2017, p. 145)
Paraphrase:
… Physical activity regulation for children vary by location. For
example, according to O’Neill et al. (2017), New York City was more
compliant with daily physical activities than other states, such as South
Carolina.

9. Personal Communication
Interviews, emails, conversations (in person or by telephone) are considered to
be types of personal communication
Personal communication must be cited in text but does not have to be included
in the reference section.
Examples:
…. (Shira Atkinson, personal communication, May 3, 2017)
OR
Shira Atkinson claims that it is necessary to include personal communication in
in-text citations (personal communication, May 3, 2017).

10. Secondary Citation - for when you would like to cite something that has be cited in someone else’s article
Whenever possible, cite the original source for both the in-text citations and in the works cited page.
However, if the original source is not accessible to you, you can cite the secondary source in your paper.
Examples:
The American Association of Citation announced that APA is the best (as cited in Atkinson, 2017)
OR
Atkinson (2017) cites the American Association of Citation, which claims that APA improves readability.

11. All ideas, graphics, videos, texts, and interviews (etc.)
that you use in your paper must be cited
All citations should include, at the least, author last
name(s) and date (when these pieces of information are
known)
All direct quotes should also include page numbers
All in-text citations should be represented in the works
cited page (**except for personal communication)
