Antisocial Personality Disorder is a psychological disorder in which an individual's way of thinking
and way of relating to others is dysfunctional and destructive. People with antisocial personality
disorder usually have no regard for right and wrong and often disregard the rights and feelings of
others (Mayo Clinic 1). They tend to antagonize and manipulate others for pleasure or personal
benefit and often violate the law and end up in trouble most of the time, but show no remorse or
regret for their actions. Some examples of the type of people with this disorder can include serial
killers and politicians.
Antisocial Personality Disorder symptoms may begin in childhood and become fully evident for
most people during their 20s and 30s. In children, cruelty to animals, bullying behavior, social
isolation, and poor school performance may be early signs of the disorder. Most of the people
diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder show symptoms that violate the rights of others. The
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) states all the possible symptoms of
the disorder:

MacKenzie discusses in her article how psychopaths are generally internally affected and experience
psychological difficulties, whereas sociopaths are not as internally affected, most of the time they
are only affected in their relationship with society (2014). To focus further on sociopathic disorder,
Dr. Paula MacKenzie discusses this history of the disorder. MacKenzie defines sociopathy as a
personality disorder characterized by a lack of social responsibility and failure to adapt to ethical
and social standards of the community (Mosby's Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary,
2002, p. 1599). After she defines the many personality disorders she discusses in the article, she
discusses how much of the research of behavioral disorders began in the 1800's when mental
asylums became popular (2014). The first classification of a disorder similar to sociopathy was
"manie sans delire" or "insanity without delirium." Even though psychopathy is the disorder that is
said to be genetic, there are significant differences in the biological brains of individuals with
sociopathic disorder and those without it. In an article by Blair and Cipolotti, an individual with
sociopathic disorder was studied and assessed, and the findings are discussed. When the individual
was given a CT scan, an enlarged image of the brain was compared to that of a neuro–typical

Antisocial Personality Disorder is a very rare disorder. The criteria to be diagnosed with Antisocial
Personality Disorder has been changed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
throughout many years. The rareness of this disorder can be considered beneficial in the world
because of the way people diagnosed with it become and what they do to others. Many people
diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder find their self in prison. A variety of causes pertain to
this disorder. Very few treatments of this disorder seem to work of this that has been tested.
Researchers are still working on a better way to treat this disorder. The defense mechanisms
associated with antisocial personality disorder are quite common and the same during the course of
diagnosis.
Antisocial personality disorder (APD or ASPD) is a mental disorder in which a person's approach in
any given situation as well as his style of thinking is neglecting towards others. People with this
disorder are commonly known as psychopaths or sociopaths. An individual with APD shows
empathy and disregards people's thoughts and feelings. Those with APD can be characterized as
morally reprehensible. They are the ones that seem to say all of the "right" things. Antisocial

The prefrontal cortex is responsible for higher mental functions such as personality, attention,
arousal, behaviour control etc., as well as being closely linked with structures involved in emotion
and memory development (e.g. the amygdala). Damage to the PFC may disrupt normal behaviour
functioning and cause some individuals to engage in negative, antisocial behaviours, or even have
an extremely negative personality change. However, arguments suggest the behaviour may be a
result of poor childhood upbringing with negative social surroundings.
S.2.1a of the Anti–Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 defines antisocial behaviour as

parents, bullying behaviours within families and ignorance of prosocial acts, causing an operant
conditioning of negative and abusive behaviour to be forced upon the child (Patterson Debaryshe, &
Ramsey, 1990).

Individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) are characterized as being deceitful,
egocentric, and having little regard for rules or the feelings of others (Duggan, 2009). Individuals
with ASPD have been found to be unable to correctly interpret emotional situations; they also
experience negative feelings more often than positive feelings. They are also more likely to
experience anger than fear, which can trigger violent behavior. Individuals with ASPD have a
tendency to employ defense mechanisms that can lead to charm and narcissism (Gawda, 2013). The
combination of lack of emotional insight with these psychopathic qualities can create a dangerous
individual. It also makes psychologists ambivalent about treating these individuals and it can make
the treatment process for even the most dedicated psychologist very challenging. As such, many of
these individuals run into trouble with law enforcement. Half of the population diagnosed with
ASPD have arrest records and half of all male inmates could be diagnosed with ASPD (Duggan,
2009). Duggan determined that 1–6% of the general male population can be diagnosed with ASPD
and co–morbidity with substance use is high. He also determined that ASPD is a disorder that is not
commonly studied properly; recent reviews of studies performed on ASPD populations could only
identify five experiments that met the Cochrane criteria for an acceptable randomized controlled

understand and express emotional experience despite proper understanding of the language. Thus, a
person suffering from antisocial personality disorder could not understand that their behavior cause

Today's society is vastly different from that of years past. Years ago, elementary teachers, along with

Antisocial personality disorder is a disregard for others rights and violating theses rights. This
disorder starts as a child to people who carry this disorder portray the characteristics of irritability,
aggressiveness, lack of remorse, and irresponsibility. A psychopath falls under the umbrella of
antisocial personality disorders. A psychopath is a person with a personality disorders which is
inherited from their parents at birth. Flashes of these inherited factors show and happen in the child
upbringing this includes torture animals at a young age, playing weird dark games as a kid, or
ripping heads of toys. A perfect example of a Psychopath is Edmund Kemper. A man who showed
his psychopath tendencies at a young age that grew into to him becoming a serial killer. My
sociopath that I choose to do my research on is Edmund Kemper III aka " The Co–Ed Killer".
Edmund Kemper was born on December 18, 1948, in Burbank, California by Clarnell Stage and
Edmund Kemper Jr .Kemper was a very intelligent person with an IQ of 136 but choose a darker
side of life and became a psychopathic serial killer and necrophile who killed 10 people including
his mother, and his grandparents. Edmund childhood wasn 't the greatest with his violent alcoholic
parents who separated at the age of nine. Ed was then forced to live with his mother because his

People have always been curious on what makes a serial killer; after all, it is difficult to imagine
murdering multiple people and not feeling an ounce of guilt or emotion afterwards. In severe cases,
this is what a person having antisocial personality disorder is capable of. Infamous serial killers such
as Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson were believed to have this disorder. Personality disorders in
general can range from mild to severe in the afflicter's actions, but antisocial PD is arguably one of
