- There are three types of influenza viruses - A, B, and C. Type A can infect animals and cause severe illness in humans. Amantadine and rimantadine inhibit influenza A virus replication. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are newer broad-spectrum antivirals that inhibit the neuraminidase enzyme needed for virus release. They are effective against influenza A, including resistant strains, and influenza B. Common side effects include nausea, headache, and cough.
