There are three main types of anesthesia: local anesthesia numbs a small area and allows the patient to remain awake; general anesthesia puts the patient into a deep sleep for surgery by using various medicines administered through gas masks, breathing tubes, or intravenous injections while carefully monitoring vital signs; regional anesthesia numbs a large area like an entire limb by injecting medicine near nerve groups so the patient remains awake but feels no pain and may receive sedatives to relax them.
