4. DEFINITION
Anemia is a decrease in the RBC count,
Hemoglobin and Hematocrit values resulting in
a lower ability for the blood to carry oxygen to
body tissues.When anemia comes on slowly,
the symptoms are often vague and may include
feeling tired, weakness, shortness of breath or
a poor ability to exercise.

# Red bone marrow produces abnormal RBC. E.g.- Cancer drugs.
•Pernicious anemia-
# Inability of stomach to absorb vitamin B12 in small
intestine.

# RBC plasma membrane ruptures.
# Maybe parasites, toxins, antibodies.
•Thalassemia-
# Less synthesis of hemoglobin. Found in population of
Mediterranean Sea.
•Sickle cell anemia-
# Hereditary blood disorder, characterized by red blood cells that
assume an abnormal rigid, sickle shape.

14. SYMPTOMS OF ANEMIA
• Easy fatigue and loss of energy.
• Unusually rapid heartbeat, particularly with exercise.
• Shortness of breath and headache, particularly with
exercise.
• Difficulty concentrating.
• Dizziness.
• Pale skin.
• Leg cramps.
• Insomnia.

15. SIGNS OF ANEMIA
•Brittle nail and hair.
•Atrophy of the papillae of the tongue.
•Angular stomatitis.
•Spoon shaped nail.
•Dysphagia and glossitis.
