Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

- 1. Ancient Civilizations Reflection My Civilization: Ancient China The Research Journey: My favorite part of the research journey was highlighting notes and key words because I liked to find them.My best research question was “What was Chinese Daily Life like?” because Ancient Chinesedaily life was interesting. While doing my research, I found it difficult to learn about how society was structured because I couldn’t find the information. The most interesting thing I learned about the structure of society was that important people were the shopkeepers.I think that ancient China had important legacies because they made many inventions. Report Writing I am proud of my report because I liked my paragraph on Daily Life. While writing the report, I became better at writing about non- fiction.If I wrote it again, I would improve my report by using more websites. Archeology Presentation I enjoyed making my artifacts because I like to make something using clay.I found it difficult to find key words.I am most proud of my making artifact because that was fun.I didn’t enjoy the archeology presentation because speaking is hard.I found it difficult to find important sentences.While preparing for this presentation, I became better doing presentations. What else? During this unit I especially enjoyed making artifact.I took extra time to call Mr. Royce for help. After this unit, I might continue to make artifacts.
