The student learned that finite resources like coal, oil and gas will eventually run out, and that conserving them can reduce pollution and habitat destruction. They discovered through a home energy audit the importance of turning off lights when rooms are unused. At school, an energy audit found a lack of recycling bins, so the student set a goal to create bins and educate about recycling. For a school project, the student made recycling bins, taught proper use, and collected recycled materials. They enjoyed the creative process but found education challenging. The student also made an environmental music video and learned trees provide air for many people. Overall, the student most enjoyed creating a magazine article for the unit and wants to continue improving their writing.

A collaborative project on reducing our ecological footprint, students in Mexico and New Zealand had the opportunity to connect, inspire, discover, and take action!
1. Finite Resources Reflection
Global Inquiry:
I learned that “finite” means that it can run out. Some examples of
finite resources include coal, oil and gas. It is important to conserve
fossil fuels because they will run out, make pollution and they will
destroy habitats and wild animals. Some alternative energy sources are
solar energy, wind energy and water energy.
While investigating the coal industry, the most interesting thing I
learned was the coal comes from dead plants and dead animals.
Local Inquiry:
During my Home Energy Audit, I discovered that we need to turn off
the light when nobody is in the room So, I set goals to turn off the
light when nobody in the room. During our BISS Energy Audit, we
discovered many problems, such as they don’t have recycling bin to put
paper in. So, we set a goal to make recycling bin for each classroom and
told them how to use the recycling bin.
Taking Action:
School Conversation Campaign
It is important to reduce, reuse and recycle paper because paper are
from trees and 1 tree gives oxygen for 3 people to breath and it stops
pollution. First we made recycling bins. Then we told them how to use
recycling bin. Finally, every day we brought the recycling bin and put in
the black plastic bag and brought it to the factory to recycle it. It was
difficult to tell them that please don’t put other thing in the recycling
bin. I enjoyed this action because when we make a recycling bin we need
many ideas to make a recycling bin.If I took a different environmental
action, I would like to tell them more how to use it and what is it for.
Environmental Music Video
I think the most persuasive line in the lyrics is “don’t you want a greener
world.” Because it tell us that if we have a greener world we will be
healthy and happy in the forest. While working on the movie, I learned
about how to save the trees and I know that 1 tree give us air for 3
people to breath. I enjoyed making this video because it fun to use the
green screen and I chose the place I wanted to be in. If I did another
music video, I would sing more soft and loud too because if another
people hear it that will sound good so better.
What else?
During this Finite Resources unit I especially enjoyed making the Finite
Resources Magazine article because I like to type and chose the image
for my magazine. After this unit, I will continue to improve my writing
so I don’t need to change any words and add the words to my writing.
