The Olmec were the earliest civilization in Mesoamerica, building large cities and religious centers in southern Mexico by 1200 BC. They carved enormous stone heads representing their gods and made advances in mathematics and a early form of writing. However, in 400 BC the Olmec mysteriously abandoned their cities, smashing the stone heads, and disappeared from history without explanation.
