voting in the lobbies for Members of both Houses has remained relatively

A more recent development has been the introduction of tablets to record the votes of
members. This change was initially brought about in the Lords. The change in the
Commons was rushed through by the proposals for double majority votes required
under the EVEL legislation. Although the changes would have happened regardless
of the need for the double majority votes. The tablets were only used on EVEL votes
MPs are the only person out of a constituency of 70,000 or so people who are able to
vote. The significance of voting cannot be understated and as such a system that
facilitates this must be robust. There are a variety of different voting procedures in
place around the world, additionally, there are also different systems used within the
UK.
Although the current system has been around for hundreds of years, and when
Members are elected or appointed they know how the system works, it is not
without its user errors. A recent example of this was when Angus McNeil MP hid in
the toilet during a vote as he had used the toilet in the lobby, but hadn t moved out

This study will aim to assess the current benefits of the voting procedure. It will

You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can
never repay you. John Bunyan. Last summer, I had the pleasure of doing just that.
Baton Rogue in Louisiana was city devastated by flooding but united by service.
Our church wished to help, and as luck would have it the St. Bernard Project
organization would sponsor a volunteer group down to Baton Rogue to help
rebuild houses. I wished to be a part of the group, and I was permitted after our
youth director agreed to include the 9th graders as well. I was very excited and
was ready to go. My sister, Hailey, would be going with me sorta like my guide.
Little did I know that this trip would change my view of what it means to be an
American and my ideas on volunteering forever. Our bus was loaded in the parking
lot of the church, and after saying goodbye to our parents, I hopped on and settled
down for a long ride. Twenty five hours is a very long time to be on a bus granted
we stopped for meals along the way. When we finally pulled into the hotel in Baton
Rogue, I wanted nothing more than to just get to our room and head to sleep. The
real fun would begin the next day when we would finally get to work. I was not

America is the land of opportunity and equality. Many people grow up believing
this to be absolutely true, but Stephen Marche feels otherwise. He wrote We Are Not

case by mentioning the United States third place ranking for the least amount of

appear for trial (Gabbidon Greene, 2013, p.327). Before this week readings I knew
a little bit about pretrial release, but I did not know that there is three categories of
pretrial release. The three different types of pretrial release which are nonfinancial,
financial, and emergency (Gabbidon Greene, 2013). Nonfinancial is basically
where a person is release without having to put up money. This is usually done
with a sign form that the person is going to show up to court on their assigned date
and this is usually released by law enforcement (Gabbidon Greene, 2013). The

In both readings, they stated that African American is less likely to get release
than whites. Gabbidon and Greene (2013) data from 1990 2004 showed that 68%
of whites is likely to get release than African American at 62% and Hispanics at
55% (p.146). This shows that maybe race plays a factor, but its not a great big
difference. There has been studies that stated that they could not found where race
played in the bail amount (Freiburger Hilinski, 2010). Gabbidon Greene (2013)
also found that 74% of females are likely to received pretrial release than males at
60% (p. 146). There has been little study done on this, but it would be interesting to
see more data on this

Job Maintenance Or Knowledge Retention
When talking to my Company Officer, Captain Polston, about the scenario where a
division officer is asked to sign line items that have not been completed, she stated
that it is a real problem that I will face in the fleet. According to Captain, in some
units in the fleet, there is a culture where marking off task or line items is the norm.
Especially when facilitated by the E 4 to E 6 level community, where items signed
off without verifying that the subordinate retained the knowledge or completed the
job. The reasoning behind speed signing line items is that somebody did it for me,
so I m going to do it for someone else. A bro before joe atmosphere has developed
in these units, where it is expected that items will be signed with minimal effort in
job maintenance or knowledge retention. Captain stated that enlisted in these select
units enlisted do not necessarily mean to harm anyone and are not all laxidasical,
but rather have assimilated into a culture where this type of conduct is accepted.
Therefore, Captain urged that we as divisional officers develop a motto of trust, but
verify. It was discussed that sometimes, it is easy to want to trust your enlisted and
even Chief when an inspection is coming around. However, we need to remember
that we are ultimately responsible for the maintenance of our division and the
knowledge/ readiness of our crew. Therefore, we must occasionally inspect the
division ourselves to ensure that all standards are met and completed
