The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system is a standardized system for classifying drugs and other medical substances. The system is maintained by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is used globally for drug classification and coding purposes.
The ATC classification system is based on the anatomical, therapeutic, and chemical properties of the drug, which helps to identify drugs based on their active ingredients and their therapeutic uses. The system consists of seven alphanumeric levels, with each level representing a different aspect of the drug classification.
The first level of the ATC code consists of the anatomical main group, which is based on the organ or system on which the drug acts. The second level consists of the therapeutic subgroup, which describes the therapeutic use of the drug. The third level consists of the pharmacological subgroup, which describes the mode of action of the drug. The fourth level consists of the chemical subgroup, which describes the chemical structure of the drug. The fifth level is the specific chemical substance, which identifies the active ingredient of the drug. The sixth level is the preparation, which describes the formulation of the drug. The seventh and final level is the packaging, which describes the packaging and administration of the drug.
ATC codes are used for many purposes, including drug registration, reimbursement, and drug utilization studies. The use of a standardized coding system like the ATC classification system helps to ensure consistency and accuracy in drug classification and coding, making it easier to compare and analyze drug utilization data across different regions and countries.
Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System and Defined Daily Doses...Balwant Meshram
The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system and the Defined Daily Dose (DDD) is the WHO recommended measuring unit which is being used for drug utilization studies. This system is internationally accepted and the users are also increasing. While measuring the drug use, the classification system and unit of measurement, both are important.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

Anatomical, therapeutic and chemical classification of drugs.pptx
1. NAME : Pawar Dnyaneshwar Ranjitsinh
CLASS : Final Year B. Pharmacy
ROLL No: 31
SUBJECT : Pharmacovigilance
Guided By : Mrs. Pawar R.V.
TOIPC NAME : Anatomical, Therapeutic And Chemical Classification Of Drugs
2. In the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system, the active
substances are divided into different groups according to the organ or system on
which they act and their therapeutic, pharmacological and chemical properties.
ATC 14 main groups are:
1)A - Alimentary Tract and Metabolism
2) B - Blood and Blood Forming Organs
3) C - Cardiovascular System
4) D – Dermatologicals
5) G - Genito Urinary System and Sex Hormones
6) H - Systemic Hormonal Preparations, Excl. Sex Hormones and Insulins
7) J - Ant infectives For Systemic Use
8) L - Antineoplastic And Immunomodulating Agents
9) M - Musculo-skeletal System
10) N - Nervous System
11) P - Antiparasitic Products, Insecticides And Repellents
12) R - Respiratory System
13) S - Sensory Organs
14) V – Various
3. Drugs are classified in groups at five different levels:
1st Level: The system has fourteen main anatomical or pharmacological groups
(1st level).
2nd Level: Pharmacological or Therapeutic subgroup
3rd& 4th Levels: Chemical, Pharmacological or Therapeutic subgroup
5th Level: Chemical substance
4. Examples:
1) The complete glibendamide classification demonstrates the structure of the code:
i) AAlimentary tract and metabolism (first level, main anatomical group).
ii) A10 Drugs used in diabetes (second level, main therapeutic group).
iii) A10B Oral blood-glucose-lowering drugs (third level, therapeutic/ pharmacological
subgroup).
iv) A10B B Sulfonamides, urea derivatives (fourth level, chemical/ therapeutic/pharmacological
subgroup)
v) A10B B01 Glibendamide (fifth level, subgroup for chemical substance)
Therefore, in the ATC system all plain glibendamide preparations are given the code A10B
B01.
2) SIMPLE Codes:
i) Lamivudine (e.g., epivir): is used in HIV as antiviral drug: J05AF05.
ii) Sumatriptan (e.g., Imigran): is used an Antimigrain as 5HT1 agonist: N02CC01.
iii) Fromoterol (e.g., Oxis): is used in asthma as beta-2 agonist: R03AC13.
5. Inclusion and exclusion criteria:
The WHO collaborating centre in Oslo establishes new entries in ATC classification
on requests from users of system.
It includes
Manufacturers
Regulatory Agencies
Researchers.
6. Active ingredients which fulfil one of following criteria will normally included in ATC
system.
➢ They are new chemical entities or biologicals proposed licensing in range of
countries. A new chemical entity is normally not included in the ATC before an
application for marketing authorization is submitted is submitted in at least one
country.
➢ They are existing well defined chemical entities used in variety of countries. An INN
should preferably be established for active ingredient. Alternatively other official name
e.g. USAN or BAN names should be available.
➢ They are herbal medicinal products assessed and approved by regulatory
authorities based on dossiers including efficacy, safety and quality data.
➢ Other medicinal products are considered on case by case basis. Complementary
homeopathic and herbal traditional medicines are in general not included in ATC
system.
