The digipak for The 1975's album uses only black and white tones, which works well for the band's indie/alternative style. It does not include images of the band members. Pictures of boards create mystery and intrigue about the album. Information about the songs and album making may attract potential buyers. Overall it effectively sells the band without giving too much away.

1. ANALYSIS OF ALBUM DIGIPAKS

2. The digipak for The 1975’s album is kept simple, using only the
tones of black and white with no additional colour. Whilst this is
quite unusual for a digipak to do as it could be argued to make it
less eye-catching, in this case I think that it works in the bands
favour. The 1975 is known for being quite indie and alternative
rock so the ‘dark vs light’ theme of the entire digipak works very
well for the group.
Also quite different is the fact that there aren’t actually any people
involved in the design, no members of the actual group are shown
in any way, shape or form on the digipak.
The pictures of the board in two of the sections create mystery
and definitely add some suspense whilst generating a fair amount
ambiguity. This could be a strategy to lure more buyers and
listeners in to buy the album or at the very least, listen to the
single.
The digipak includes a lot of information regarding the songs as well as the actual making of the album which a lot
of people glancing (debating whether or not to purchase) could find interesting when looking for songs that they
know. I think that overall this digipak is really effective at selling the band, especially without giving away too
much information about the band and about what the album could include.

3. Lady Gaga’s digipak has the primary colour of pink
being the only one featured across it, aside from the
tones of black and white. The font used across the
digipak is very delicate
One thing I really like about this digipak is that for
the design of the CD itself, I like how they’ve taken
the shape, colour and positioning of her actual lips
in the first picture on the left and animated them to
be the main focus of the CD. I think that this is really
effective as it’s repetitive but yet differs from each
other. I think that the pink and reds are really
powerful because they add a very feminine vibe to
the digipak. Additionally to this, I think that the way that these colours have been used make the digipak slightly
promiscuous which we can assume is intentionally due to the controversy of the artist in question.
Lady Gaga’s hands and lips are also repeatedly shown across the digipak whilst her eyes are never actually shown.
In the main image, her eyes are closed as her head is leaning back and in the CD picture, she appears to have a
sleep-mask covering her eyes. In my opinion, I think that this creates a lot of mystery and further broadcasts the
promiscuity and/or controversy of the artist herself as there is undeniably something unusual about the overall
design of the digipak. However, I still really like the whole layout of the digipak and I think that it’s really effective
in drawing in fans of the star and creating buzz.

4. Belonging to Marina and the Diamonds, I think that out of all of the
digipak’s I’ve looked at, this one in particular is my favourite. The
main aspect of this digipak which I like is the animatic effect that’s
been applied to the artist and the words featured on the digipak.
Whilst I’m unsure whether this is an effect I would like to apply to
my own digipak I really like the use of it for the Marina and the
Diamonds CD.
Something else that I really like about this digipak is how the words
(which are the songs featured on the album and the actual name of
the artist) are manipulated around the pictures of the artist. What
this does is shows a hierarchy of importance, in this case being that
the artist is more important that what's actually on the CD. This
isn’t too unusual for a digipak to do but I really like how the text is
morphed around the artist’s hair.
Due to the use of the animatic effect across the entire digipak, it
almost goes as far to create an exaggerated or even hyper-reality. This is because the pictures used clearly aren’t
real life as reality isn’t in this effect. Additionally I like how the artist takes up an entire section on the digipak,
leaving no room for anything else at all. Once again it is her hair which seems to be a primary focus throughout
the digipak. I think that it presents power and strength as the big hair makes her bigger, the colour of her hair also
compliments the grey and green tones used throughout.
