Proteins are polymers made up of amino acids. Amino acids can be used to synthesize other important molecules like serotonin, catecholamines, porphyrins, nitric oxide, and nucleotides. Amino acids contain carboxyl and amino functional groups and have different R side chains. They can exist as cis-trans isomers due to double bond geometry or as optical isomers due to chiral carbon atoms. Amino acids undergo various chemical reactions involving their R groups, carboxyl groups, and amino groups. They are classified based on whether humans can synthesize them and the structure of their R groups.
