Purpose
To investigate the policy and regulatory
environment for cultured proteins in specific
geographic contexts and describe how these
environments may influence their use in low-
and middle-income settings.
High-income geographies:

• Stakeholder interviews (n=25).
• Desk review of peer-reviewed and grey literature.
• Review by EAG policy technical sub-group and
select key stakeholders.
• Where possible, the policy and regulatory
environment for microbial food enzymes was used
as a comparison.
• For each focal geography, the regulation of GMOs
was also included.
• We also reviewed international standards and
guidelines that apply to foods, as well as dietary
classifications.

importance of obtaining and sharing
rigorous and robust safety data, as
well as industry organization,
coordination, and transparency.
Future scientific inquiry in multiple
domains (e.g., safety, nutritional profile,
consumer acceptance, impact modeling,
etc.) and across multiple country contexts
is warranted to further grow the evidence
base underpinning these food
innovations and inform their appropriate
introduction, regulation, and
commercialization.
