3% of wells in Canada were drilled horizontally in the first quarter of 2014, up from 66% in the first quarter of 2013 and 55% in 2012.
But Canadian E&P companies are not only drilling more and more horizontal wells, they also drill longer and longer laterals and are simultaneously finding ways of driving down ROP. With the pressure to drill faster and cheaper and the uncertainties, risks and opportunities that the advances in technology provide to drill longer and deeper it is critical to look at what E&P companies have done to increase ROP and achieve optimal cost-per-foot for horizontal drilling operations in the WCSB.
To help operators achieve these goals, the 3rd Annual Horizontal Drilling Canada 2014 will be bringing together over 20 exclusively E&P operators, sharing case histories based on recent horizontal drilling operations in the WCSB, with a focus on applications in the Cardium, Montney, Duvernay, Horn River, Viking and Canadian Bakken. It will be the only congress 100% dedicated to drilling professionals working on horizontal wells in Canada's key basins.
Leading operators will be breaking down the latest advances in horizontal drilling technologies and techniques, determining the optimal lateral length for horizontal wells in terms of cost-per-foot, evaluating which drilling fluids can deliver higher ROP in which plays and evaluating how the latest downhole tools, drill bits and casing designs can be utilized to cost-effectively maximize production.

Liberty Industrial was engaged by Glencore to complete the demolition of a former coal preparation plant on a redundant mine site in Teralba NSW. While the mine was non-operational and formerly underground, many of the mine systems, plant pass-in and permitting requirements were based on on the site being an operational underground mine. Both Liberty Industrial and Glencore worked together during the planning phase to ensure that both parties understood the work, the design-related aspects and aspects of the Glencore systems that were not appropriate for this type of work. The teams worked together to develop a risk-based approach that satisfied the Glencore internal systems while maintaining efficient execution processes.
This presentation is an overview of the work Mangoola Coal has done with Maintenance Technology Institute (MTI) within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University to understand the causes of failure relating to an incident in October 2016, and developing strategies to prevent similar failures in the future.
This presentation runs through case studies illustrating why machine failures are an invaluable source of knowledge. Yes, it comes at an expense, downtime, repairs and can have a significant impact on safety. However, it is the key lessons from a failure investigation that drive continuous improvement and, with it, commercial success and an environment where safety is paramount.
The studies draw on the concept of the price of non-conformance and why solely focusing on commercial short term gain can ultimately lead to long term pain. This is particularly true for critical assets that can affect production and safety if something goes wrong.

Bakken Artificial Lift & Production Optimization Congress 2014 marketinglbcg
The Bakken success story has continued into 2014, with the latest data showing that wells in the region are now producing over a million barrels of oil per day. However, operators are increasingly aware that with the productivity rate of Bakken wells shown to decline by an average of 70% in the first year, it is vital that they optimize the production phase of their operations if this explosive growth is to be sustained.
Operators in the region therefore increasingly need to know which artificial lift techniques and chemical treatments are working best in the Bakken to cost-effectively maximize production rates.
Building on the sell-out success of the first event in the series, the 2nd Annual Bakken Artificial Lift & Production Optimization Congress 2014 will again bring together Bakken's leading E&Ps for the only dedicated congress for production professionals in the Bakken, focusing on artificial lift, chemical treatments & production optimization.
Featuring a totally revamped agenda for 2014, the event this year will present 20+ brand new case studies based on work done in the last year. Speakers will be examining technical solutions for reducing failure rates, maximizing productivity & improving run times by optimizing artificial lift design & chemical treatments for Bakken wells & overcoming challenges relating to sand control, gas interference & wellbore deviation.

Permian Artificial Lift & Production Optimization 2015marketinglbcg
As operators in shale producing regions across the world face uncertainty over oil prices, many E&P companies, big and small are veering increasingly towards more consistent proven plays, with the world famous Permian Basin being at the top of many strategic priorities lists. With both rig count and production per rig growing steadily throughout 2014, and oil production expected to reach an all time high of 2 million bpd in 2015, the most established shale play in the US is showing no signs of slowing down.
The recovery potential in the Permian is not a concern here, but maintaining barrel margins on crude by driving down production and artificial lift costs is now mission-critical. By exchanging the very latest case studies, tried and tested lift technology innovations and failure prevention techniques, operators in the Permian can learn enough to make sure even marginal wells remain economics in 2015.
PERMIAN PRODUCTION OPTIMIZATION - DEDICATED PURELY TO PRODUCTION PROFESSIONALS
The 2nd in the highly rated series, this year's Permian Artificial Lift & Production Optimization 2015 is coming back with the brand new angle of "cutting costs and improving recovery", to guide operators through times of uncertain oil prices.
Renowned for being the most practical, learning focused operator-led production congress in the US, presentations will focus on implementing the right type of artificial lift at the right stage of a well's life, optimizing operability of each lift type, preventing corrosion, paraffin build-up and scale and reducing the costs of water management.

Through the Great Lakes Internship program, I worked at Alliance Petroleum
Corporation as a Field Technician Intern in their Buckhannon, WV office.
• Alliance Petroleum has developed and produced oil and gas wells since
1985.
• The company has 83 full time employees.
• Headquarters in Canton, OH.
• Field offices in Marietta, OH, Buckhannon, WV, and Indiana, PA
• Operates 3765 wells in the Appalachian Basin
Introduction
• Visited numerous gas wells and compressors with well tenders
• Placed soap sticks in wells and flowed wells into the tank battery
• Read and changed circular pressure charts
• Operated leak detection tools on pipeline walks
• Worked on a swabbing rig
• Filled out paperwork for government compliance with pipeline walks
• Checked Miss Utility inquiries against APC wells and pipelines
• Observed production changes after fieldwork (soap, swabbing)
• Measured tank battery fluid levels
Field Technician Experience
To apply knowledge and skills related to the concepts, principles, and
methodologies of Petroleum Engineering and a liberal arts education.
• Used Fluid Mechanics knowledge to understand orifice plates for
pressure reading in wells.
• Liberal arts education enabled me to communicate effectively through
conversation and written reports.
• Diverse student body prepared me to connect with coworkers from
vastly different backgrounds.
To analyze how the company has adapted to cater to the downturn in the
energy market.
• APC temporarily suspended drilling to lower operating costs.
• Limited hours for office and field employees.
• Investment of in-house swabbing rig cuts cost of swabbing a well in half.
Also, swabbing increases production of gas wells and produces oil to the
tank battery.
To explore subsets of petroleum engineering (drilling, production,
completions, reservoir) and examine which would be a good fit for me
based on my skills and inclinations.
• My experience with APC exposed me to production engineering.
• Looking forward to experiencing drilling and reservoir as well.
To build my self-confidence in professional settings.
• Working with foremen and well tenders allowed me to practice
interacting with others in a professional setting.
• All employees were approachable. This made it much easier to discuss
what I saw in the field with these individuals and facilitated an increase
in my self-confidence as a result.
• Well tenders and foreman joked around and helped me feel like one of
the team.
Objectives ReviewA swabbing rig is a type of truck used to remove liquids from natural gas wells
to improve production. My tasks on the rig included disassembling the
wellhead and fitting the swabbing rig onto the well. I also closed a valve
showing fluid has reached the surface level, and watched out for flags on the
cable, indicating that the swabbing tools are close to the wellhead.
My supervisor and I ran into a challenge with the rig when a well tender tried
to lift too much fluid to the surface at once, causing the truck to strain and
knocking over the support jacks. From then on, the cable would not spool
correctly on the truck. After disassembling part of the motor and manually
engaging the clutch for the winch, we realized the issue stemmed from the
cable sliding off of its guide at the top of pipe stack, which preventing it from
spooling smoothly.
Swabbing Rig
This pipeline system needs to be inspected regularly for leaks, pipeline
markers, and possible environmental hazards to the pipe.
My role included using leak detection tools known as “sniffers” to check for
gas leaks. I also checked where pipeline markers were removed and also
assessed potential hazards to the pipeline such as road washouts. I recorded
this information from the walks on paperwork necessary for government
inspections.
We achieved walking the pipeline and filing all the paperwork. From this
experience, I learned how pipelines must be inspected per regulations, and
how they are built and varied with respect to roads and businesses.
