The document outlines the aims and considerations for research to help market the organization SASH. It discusses looking at 5-10 existing marketing materials like posters, leaflets, and ads to ensure new designs are unique. Primary research would question 5-10 people aged 16-24 using online surveys and interviews. Finished pieces would be displayed in places frequented by that age group like colleges, shops, and on buses and trains. SASH faces funding issues as current funding from the council is being cut, so marketing is needed to gain donations from the communities they help.
1. Aims and Considerations sheet
Existing Products:
How many existing artefacts do you feel you will need to look at?
I think that in order to fully understand how SASH has already marketed themselves, I will need to
look at about 5-10 existing artefacts. The artefacts that I will choose to look at will vary from
leaflets, bus adverts and posters. I would want my designs to be individual so I will look at other
designs in order to ensure that what I create in unique as well as successful.
What kinds of artefacts are you expecting to look at?
I will specifically look at posters and leaflets designed and used by SASH already, because I think
that these are the two types of artefacts that I would mostly like to design. Although I would like to
look at these two, I think looking at more creative artefacts like billboards and bus adverts will be a
good way for me to get more variety in my designs through my research.
What elements will you be looking at to help you with your research?
I will be looking at the layout, the colours used, the fonts and the sizes of the text used, the style
and general tone of the artefact. I will also look at the images that have been used, are they
photographs or drawings? If they are photographs, who took them, was it an in house
photographer or did they hire someone?
I will look at these things for each one of the artefacts that I research, because it will help to
determine how SASH likes the ‘look’ of their marketing artefacts to be, for example if they use a
specific layout for all their posters, and if they have a specific colour scheme.
Primary Research:
How many people would you hope to question as part of your primary research?
For my primary research, I would like to question as many people as possible. But I think
realistically I will be able to question around 5-10 people, in order to get the amount of feedback I
need. Although If I were to use survey monkey, to creative an online questionnaire, I think that I
could contact a lot more people via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, by getting
people to forward on the questionnaire to other people.
What age group would you like to target and why?
I will be targeting people aged 16-24 with my marketing artefacts because that is who the SASH
organisation aims to help.
What methods will you use?
My primary method of research will be to create a questionnaire on survey monkey and
distributing to social networking sites, which is where the target age group frequent.
By targeting social networking sites I am more likely to get answers from people in the 16-24 age
group, although I will have to be wary because some people may give joke answers.
Another efficient method would be to go out and find people in the age group who are homeless
or have known someone who has been homeless, and interview them directly.
2. How will you know if your research has been successful?
I will know that my research has been successful if I receive a good amount of feedback. I think
that if I were to receive a lot of varied answers in my feedback it would help me to create an
artefact that would appeal to a variety of people.
Considerations:
Why might you need to be sensitive when carrying out research during this project?
When carrying out this research I will need to think about how I approach the questions with
people. I will also need to be sensitive to peoples lives and that they might not wish to tell me
everything, for example the exact reason why they are homeless. I will need to be aware of me
making people feel uncomfortable or if they don’t ant to answer questions, I will have to make
sure not to make them feel pressured in to answering them. I will also need to be aware of
dangerous situation, although these are unlikely.
Could you face any problems when trying to do this research? If so, is there a way to overcome
these?
I think that the main problem I will face is being able to find people who are willing to answer my
questions openly. I think that some people will want to keep some of their past to themselves,
which is perfectly fine, and I will have to find another to gain the research I really need.
Where would you expect your finished pieces to be displayed and distributed?
Because I want to do a variation of artefacts, I would want them to be displayed in a variety of
places. I think that posters and leaflets would be beneficial being displayed in places were 26-24
year old frequent, such as colleges and sixth forms, local cinemas and shops. As well as having
billboards with the finished piece being displayed around the city centre. I am also going to design
bus adverts to be displayed on the sides of buses and coaches. I also think it would be interesting
to place leaflets and posters etc., on trains. Because a lot of people use trains to get around,
therefore it is distributing SASH and what they do to a wider variety of people.
What funding issues might an organisation like SASH face?
An organisation like SASH will face funding issues like not having enough money to finance them
selves or not having enough money to help the volunteers to facilitate the youths. At the moment
the charity is being partially funded by the council, but due to the economic state their funding is
being cut. In order for them to gain money, they must market them selves to get donations form
the communities they help. For example, they have released a set of bookmarks that having a
blackberry scanner on them that take the person directly to a place where they can donate money
to the charity. They are also trying to acquire a larger office space, but due to lack of funding they
are having to plea for donations from the public.
