1. Aims and Considerations sheet
Existing Products:
How many existing artefacts do you feel you will need to look at?
I think that I will have to have a look at about 5-8 different types of existing media products that
are available on the market this will allow me to asses the different techniques which have been
used to catch the audience’s attention. I will look at different fundamentals of the artefacts and
asses the similarities and the differences between the products. Identifying the different colours,
text and other elements used will provide me with relevant research that I need to create a
product. I think that looking at between 5-10 products will allow me to get an understanding of
what I will need to create and it will also give me an understanding of the standard that my
products need to be at to be successful.
What kinds of artefacts are you expecting to look at?
The different types of products that I am going to research will include a range of different items.
These different products will include a range of charity posters, billboard designs, website adverts,
bus stop adverts, stickers, leaflets and also business cards.
What elements will you be looking at to help you with your research?
From all of my products that I am going to research I will compare and contrast each product and
identify how the each element has been put together to create an advertisement to people. The
specific things that I will look at in the design will include the colours used and how they work
together and represent the meaning of the product. I will also identify the font used as well as the
copy. I will analyse the colours used in the font as well as the language used for the copy. The
other elements, which I will look at, will be looking at the images. I will find out the meaning of the
images and weather they have a link to the meaning of the product. Other elements I will look at
will be looking at the techniques used in the layout and if certain things have been put there.
Primary Research:
How many people would you hope to question as part of your primary research?
I am hoping to question between 10-30 people as part of my primary research. This will allow me
to gather a wide range of responses for my questions. I will be able to understand the different
responses given and I will also be able to compare different answers. From these answers I will
then be able to get an idea of peoples thoughts and opinions for my product allowing me to create
a better more suited product aimed at my audience.
What age group would you like to target and why?
I am hoping to target the age group 16-24. As this is a young audience I am looking create a
product, which is suited for young people. By setting a young target audience I will understand
what the younger generation has interest in allowing me to based my product to suit that target
audience better.
2. What methods will you use?
The different methods, which I will use to conduct my primary research, will be carrying out
questionnaire. I will create, print out and give out my questionnaire to people, which suit my
target audience. I will also use a website called survey monkey. This website allows me to create
an online survey. After this I will then share the URL to people where they can take part in my
survey. I will also use the questions on social media and advertise my questionnaire. I will use
websites such as face book, twitter and tumblr. This will allow me to share my questionnaire to
other people.
How will you know if your research has been successful?
I will be able to find out if primary research has been successful from the amount of responses that
I will get back. I will find out if my research has been successful from the content within the
responses. When collecting my data I will be able to find out if the questionnaire and survey have
been successful from the answers given. I will be able to compare and contrast the answers that I
have been given and come up with an idea of what the audience thinks. This will then give me
ideas to create my product, from looking at the data I will also be able to identify what elements
will create a successful product and also what elements will create a product that doesn’t interest
the audience.
Considerations:
Why might you need to be sensitive when carrying out research during this project?
I will have to be aware of current issues that people may have when I am carrying out the survey. I
will have to be concerned when asking questions, which could become personal towards the
audience. Asking questions such as experience, or family issues or personal problems could come
across as very insensitive however I will have too make sure that the questions are all suitable to
be answered without causing an issue with the public.
Could you face any problems when trying to do this research? If so, is there a way to overcome
these?
There could be many different issues which I could face when carrying out this research these
problems could include that people may not feel confident enough to take part in the
questionnaire from previous experience or they may not feel comfortable filling in the
questionnaire as they have been homeless. To prevent this from happening I will make sure that
the questions I ask are very suitable and will not need a specific answer. I will also make sure that
the questions I ask do not need any specific answers this will prevent conflict from people who
have had previous experience being homeless.
Where would you expect your finished pieces to be displayed and distributed?
I would like my finished product to be published in places where it is going to be viewed by the
public. I would also like my work to be published places where my target audience is going to view
it. Some of these places would include, schools, colleges, public toilets, clubs, and bus shelters and
also train stations. Having my homeless promotion work in these places will allow the
advertisements to be seen by my target audience.
3. What funding issues might an organisation like SASH face?
Some of the funding issues that this charity could face would be making money. As SASH is such a
small charity there is only 10 staff what work there however they provide for more that 300 people
per year. Each year more and more people go to the SASH charity for help. As it is such a small
charity they will be struggling with providing for people every year as more and more homeless
people visit a charity when they become homeless. Although that the charity does get abit of help
from the authority they will still struggle to pay and help the people as the number of people who
become homeless may increase.
