This document discusses the importance of information accessibility and addresses common myths. It provides an overview of relevant laws and standards, examples of accessible organizations, and steps organizations can take to develop an accessibility strategy. These include using structured headings and tables, adding alt text to images and media, ensuring fonts can be resized and colors contrast. The document also notes that while the legal requirements for web accessibility are still developing, the Department of Justice endorses WCAG 2.0 Level AA as the technical standard.
A presentation delivered at the Society for Technical Communication (STC) India chapter annual conference in 2004 at Chennai. It talks about the importance of accessibility in software and web-applications with a focus on technical writing or user documentation. It also takes into perspective the US laws such as Section 508.
Are you aware that the federal government has requirements for how you communicate? If you use video, it needs to be both captioned and audibly described. Is your documentation on the web? It needs to be accessible. But what does it mean to be accessible? What are the laws governing accessibility, and how do they relate to your profession? In this presentation, Paul Paire from Temple University will cover:
•An overview of accessibility and the related laws
•Specific accessibility laws as they relate to the technical communication field
•Items to address when making documents (Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF) and videos accessible
Dr Scott Hollier presents a demonstration on how the vast world of online content is experienced for people with disabilities, as well as tools and techniques to help understand the need and importance of web accessibility. This presentation covers a brief history of access, information on user experience, accessibility features available in Windows, Mac, iOS and Android devices and resources for ICT professionals including social media tools, document accessibility advice and WCAG 2.0 at a glance.
In this webinar, we will explore the principles of accessible web design with practical tips you can begin implementing today. Ash Harris, CEO of AKEA Web Solutions, will also dive into how you can implement a long-term strategy for maintaining an accessible website.
With increased complaints and legal action for organisations of inaccessible websites (Coles, Peapod) and apps (Westpac), now is the time for all web and app Project Managers, Developers, UX/Designers, Content Producers, Business Analysts and Testers to be ‘baking in’ accessibility into processes and work practices.
This presentation will show that accessibility is everyone’s responsibility and it is not difficult to get started or find resources that will help you and your team produce a website, app or digital presence that works for everyone!

If you're not familiar with the topic it can be overwhelming at first. This talk serves as a crash course into web accessibility to help people get a grasp on the topic overall and figure out where they can go to learn more. It's useful for designers, developers, product managers, or anyone else involved in product development. Come learn about why accessibility is important, what all those acronyms mean (WCAG, ATAG, WAI-ARIA, oh my!), and about some of the tools of the trade.

Don't Panic! How to perform an accessibility evaluation with limited resourcesMichael Ryan
Being tasked with an accessibility evaluation is can be daunting. How can you measure accessibility? What disabilities are the most important? What tools do you need? How long will it take? Where do I start? What does "accessible" even mean?
These are all questions I asked myself last year when I performed my first accessibility eval. This session will share everything I learned since then in performing three accessibility evaluations.

Access Not Denied: Accessible Websites for AllDesignHammer
Website Accessibility refers to the idea that people of all abilities and disabilities should be able to access online content. These disabilities can impair vision, hearing, and movement. Since the early days of the web, accessibility focus in the US has been on government run, and government funded websites. This can often include Nonprofits, but even if it is not required, making your website accessible better serves your audience. We will provide a high-level overview of website accessibility, how to think about website accessibility from an organizational perspective, and how to start a website accessibility initiative in your own organization.
Marketing Without Barriers: Considering Digital Accessibility for Customers a...Whole Brain Group, LLC
There are 57 million Americans living with a disability, and many of these people need to use assistive technology to interact with websites and digital marketing materials. If your website and marketing materials aren't created properly, they won't be compatible with these devices, and you could be unintentionally excluding customers who would otherwise like to buy from you. You can also be at risk for legal liability if you're in an industry that is subject to accessibility compliance regulations.
This talk illustrates why businesses and marketers should be thinking about accessibility when they develop marketing plans and launch digital campaigns.
Did you know, nearly 1 in 5 people have disabilities in the U.S. alone? Do you know how to tell if your website is fully accessible to everyone, even those with disabilities?
In this webinar you will learn what web accessibility is, and how to make sure your website is usable by all your constituents, including those with disabilities.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

2. A Conversation Worth Having
• A real story
• The added value of being accessible
• Do the right thing
• Myths about accessibility
– Accessibility = ugly
– Accessibility = breaking the bank
3. Harness the Power of Partnership
• Where Things Stand:
– Legal status
• There are no specific published technical requirements that define how the ADA is applied to the
Internet. Different circuit courts and the Department of Justice have different positions. This is a
developing legal area and knowledgeable counsel is critical.
– ADA Enforcement
• The Department of Justice: enforces based on WCAG 2.0 Level AA guidelines as the technical
standard.
• State and Local: depending on your state, you could get pressure from state and local agencies or
the State Attorney General
• Advocacy Groups: Pursue litigation to accomplish access
• Plaintiff’s Counsel: ADA-focused plaintiff’s attorneys are actively pursuing web-related claims,
especially in recent months
– Dealing with Demand Letters
• What To Do First (Hint: Don’t call CLB)
– Counsel is critical
– Either your in-house legal team or external counsel
– Majority of demand letters we’ve seen are boilerplate and rely principally on automatic
testing results, not expert testing
– Your legal counsel can create a plan alongside a technical consultant like CLB
4. Harness the Power of Partnership (cont.)
The Tools We Use
• Assistive Technologies
– Examples of assistive technology for ICT
user:
• Screen readers
• Refreshable Braille displays
• Screen magnifiers
• Onscreen or other special keyboards
• TDD/TTY and video relay devices
• Text-to-speech software
• Word prediction software
• Screen readers and screen magnifiers are the
most common types of assistive technology
used by persons who are blind or visually
impaired
• CLB Services
– Free limited audits
– Competitively-priced comprehensive
audits
– Periodic monitoring
– Training
– General and specific consultations
– Strategic accessibility policy creation and
implementation
– Referral program
6. Why Information Accessibility?
• 19% of population has some disability (U.S. Census)
• 12% of population deals with migraines (Migraine
Research Foundation)
• 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 women have color
blindness (Colblindor)
• 75% of adult population use vision correcting
products (Vision Council of America)
• 20% of Internet users have visual impairment
(AccessibilIT.com)
• 1 in 3 adults experience blindness or partial sight
loss as age (AcessibilIT.com)
7. Accessibility Guidance
• U. S. Access Board, federal agency promotes equality for people
with disabilities – Section 508 Refresh January 2017
– Incorporates WCAG by reference for web content
– Incorporates ISO 14289 by reference for accessible PDF files
• U. S. Rehabilitation Act, Section 508, Electronic Access to
Information
• U. S. Rehabilitation Act, Section 504, Protecting Students with
Disabilities
• Americans with Disabilities Act
• Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
• UN Accessibility for the Disabled
• Canadians with Disabilities Act
8. Document Accessibility Standards
• ISO 32000, Document management – Portable Document
Format (PDF)
• ISO 14289-1, Document management applications – Electronic
document file format enhancement for accessibility – Part 1:
Use of ISO 32000-1 (PDF/UA-1)
• ISO/CD 14289-2, Document management applications -
Electronic document file format enhancement for accessibility –
Part 2: Use of ISO 32000-2 (PDF/UA-2)
• WCAG, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (Worldwide Web
Consortium)
• Technical Implementation Guide PDF/UA
• Technical Implementation Guide PDF/UA and ISO 32000-1
• Achieving WCAG 2.0 with PDF/UA
9. Accessible PDF Files
• Searchable text – Scanned image text is not accessible
and can be made accessible with OCR
• Fonts that allow characters to be extracted to text – need
to include enough information about the fonts so the
extraction can determine how to map the font to Unicode
characters
• Do not rely on colors or sensory characteristics to convey
meaning
• Make sure your colors contrast sufficiently
• Have controls for audio
• Do not use flashing or blinking – can cause a seizure in
matter of seconds
10. Accessibility Examples
• U. S. Department of Homeland
Security (2013)
• U. S. Small Business Administration
(SBA) (2009)
• Target.com (2008)
• H&R Block (2013)
• Canadian Federal Government (2010)
11. What Can Be Done?
• Develop an Information Access Strategy
• Use defined structural headings, lists and
data tables
• Add descriptive alternative text for images,
embedded music, etc.
• Eliminate flashing or blinking objects
• Ensure fonts can be resized
• Make colors contrast
