This document discusses how stereotypes are portrayed in advertising and their harmful effects. It notes that entertainment, sports, and media influence how people learn gender roles and stereotypes from a young age. Specifically, it analyzes how male archetypes in advertising often emphasize aggression, violence, and danger to represent masculinity. Similarly, women's roles in ads frequently focus on beauty, sex appeal, and thinness. The document encourages people to think critically about these stereotypes and how they limit potential by restricting how different genders can express themselves.

Understanding Stereotypes for Cognitive Designallisonvleach
As part of my Cognitive Science class this last Spring, I presented an overview of how stereotypes influence human behavior. This topic is especially useful to cognitive designers - a category of designers who regularly incorporate findings from cognitive science to enrich the development of new products and experiences.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

4. Stereotypes
• Where do we learn gender roles?
• What people teach us stereotypes? Entertainment? Sports?
Media?
• What other people influence our learning on gender roles?
5. • Real people can experience the full range of emotions,
including happiness and sadness, love and anger.
6. • Stereotypes are destructive because they limit our potential.
• Boys are not born to be violent, or have unhealthy attitudes
towards girls.
• Girls don’t have to be submissive.
• We can free ourselves from these restrictions being aware of
how we learn them.
7. Male archetypes in advertising
• ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING:
• Basic instincts: sex, fear,
agressiveness refer to
masculinity
8. Male archetypes in ads
• THE NEW WARRIORS:
• Strength, power, adventure. Consumers associate danger,
violence and excitement.
9. Male archetypes in ads
• THE CAVE MAN MENTALITY
• Use of violent male icons or heroes from popular history to
demonstrate masculinity: soldiers, pirates, even cowboys.
