High School Scholarship Essay
For the Fairfield High School Scholarship Application, the essay requirement states:
Attach an essay explaining your outstanding loyalty and service to your school, community and
family. Include how your future plans will involve service to others.
Write a 300 500 word essay on the above topic.
In my four years as a Fairfield Eagle, I have come to a new understanding of our school motto, A
Tradition of Excellence. Excellence in our school is something that we boast about regularly
throughout our community. For example, what community can boast of a football program that, in
the last decade, has been to more state championship games than any other school? What
community can boast of a girls basketball program that held a 104 0 record with three back to
back titles, and a total of four? My answer: Fairfield can. Therefore, nothing is a bigger source of
pride or, more inspiring than being a part of a community that should never have achieved such a
high level of success. Consequently, through A Tradition of Excellence , we commit ourselves to
the path of becoming something better, and what better to take with us into the future than the
desire to constantly push for the best that we can hope to be? ... Show more content on

Track and field, more commonly known as track, is a sport that tests a person s ability to run,
jump, and throw. Many people don t know much about it. It is a sport with a little bit of
something for everybody. Track has been around for hundreds of years, is easy for anyone to do
when they train, has many different events, and includes some of the best athletes of all time.
As stated in the introduction, track has many different events. They include running, jumping, and
throwing. The sport has been around since ancient times. Track has evolved a lot since those
times. Many events have been added to the sport. Anyone can become a great runner if they work

Laurel Hill Duke Forest Report
Laurel Hill in Duke Forest Report At Laurel Hill Duke Forest there is a large granodiorite cliff
adjacent to a river on one side. This cliff is not smooth and has several parallel fractures instead
of one steep slope. Observations of this cliff were taken in order to gather data and find possible
explanations for why this cliff is where it is located and why the river adjacent to it follows a V
shaped path. One observation was that the range of the strikes and dips of the fractures facing
river were all near parallel ranging from strike of 170 190 degrees and dips ranging from 70 90
degrees. There were other fractures oriented differently on other sides of the outcrop. Also, the
surface of the outcrop was highly weathered in some parts where the rocktype was not
distinguishable without using a rock hammer and had moss growing over it.
On the first side of the outcrop the rock when examined was greenish and had small black grains
indicative of diorite with hornblende giving the green color. The rock was similar to the outcrop
encountered at Hollow rock which also had several fractures parallel although not as many, and that
outcrop was also highly weathered. On the other side of the outcrop, the rock was incredibly
different. This side was not weathered beyond recognition but ... Show more content on

Further, a primary cause of cliff formation is erosion and weathering. Erosion and weathering
provides a plausible explanation for the location and structure of this cliff since erosion and
weathering caused by rain and wind is a common cause of cliff formation, and the observations
recorded are consistent as evidence of erosion and weathering taking place. North Carolina has a
rainy climate, so rain could definitely be a factor in weathering. The rain and wind washes away
and erodes softer rocks separating them from harder rocks forming a sharp crack after the fracture
occurs and the rocks

How Social Workers Within Hospice
Social work is recognized as a helping profession, by attempting to improve a better quality of
life and accessing the needs of clients. However, when addressing the needs of client, over time
can cause a great deal of stress on a social worker, which leads to burnout. In the social work field,
particularly hospice, social workers work in a high loss environment which can also contribute to
burnout and their own death anxiety issues. In this researchproposal, we will investigate how social
workers within hospice face burnout and how it is relates to death anxiety.
The purpose of hospice is to provide the best quality life and end of life care for individuals with a
chronic illness. Engaging in hospice social work is both a rewarding and challenging (Quinn Lee,
Olson McBride, Unterberger, 2014). Individuals often choose to become hospice social workers for
a variety of reasons including a sense of purpose and commitment based on personal experiences
with death and grief; disenchantment towards dying in a hospital setting and a desire to focus on
the quality of life versus the quantity of life (Quinn Lee, Olson McBride, Unterberger, 2014).
Rewards associated with hospice work include working with an interdisciplinary setting, the
opportunity to implement hospice philosophies, and the opportunity to share transcendent
experiences with clients and their families (Quinn Lee, Olson McBride, Unterberger, 2014).

The Anatomy Of Hair
How to handle your hair
The Anatomy of Hair
Hair is fibre, and it is a lot like wool. Every hair has three layers. The first and inner most layer of
fibres are the medulla. The second layer is the cortex that is around the medulla, and the outer most
layer is called the cuticle and it protects the other sensitive layers underneath from breakage or
damage. Each hair grows around 0,653cm each month out of the follicles in our heads and it may
keep growing for up to 6 years until it falls out and there is space for new hair to grow. The length
of your hair depends on how long it grows for. If it only grows for less years than the average
growth period of six years, it will be shorter. The thickness of your hair depends on the wideness of

a suspect should be informed that any statements obtained may be used as an admission of guilt.
Third, all suspects have a right to an attorney. Fourth, an individual should be informed that if they

understand their rights. In my opinion, I do feel the court made the rights decision in the Miranda
case because all individuals should be notified of their right. This procedure ensures that law

The Chocolate War And An Absolute Diary Of A Part Time Indian
When people think about tribalism, they usually associate it with a strong possession of a cultural
or ethnical identity. Tribalism can take many forms. For example, it can refer to popular culture in
which people are exhibiting loyalty to their social group. Certainly, there are positive and negative
perspectives to either side. When reading The Chocolate War and An Absolute
Diary of A Part Time
Indian, I experienced both sides of tribalism. When, reading An Absolute Diary of A Part Time
Indian, by Sherman Alexie, I saw how the protagonist Arnold was able to gain support from his
tribes while discovering strengths inside of himself that he never knew existed. In comparison, I
discovered while reading The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier, the protagonist Jerry had the
foundations of support, but it ended up crumbling when he needed the support the most. Why was
Arnold able to become an individual while being a member of numerous tribes, when Jerry s tribes
didn t support him for being an individual?
Jerry, a freshman who comes into Trinity and is able to throw off its balance. He is able to defy
the Vigils and that action alone is huge, because no one has ever dared to defy them before
because the Vigils are their own tribe at Trinity. Jerry is able to disturb the tribe and almost rally
supporters behind him, but it doesn t last very long and Jerry is singled out by the Vigils. Jerry

The Food Of The Potato Industry
Over time, potatoes have become a favorite and satisfying source of nourishment for individuals
globally. For many centuries, potatoes have been utilized to feed a variety people including those
who made historical strides. For example, an icon such as Christopher Columbus went on sea
vogues for extended periods of time and he had to store supplies and resources that had long shelf
life and nonperishable items. Since the versatility of potatoes are endless the purpose of this
particular vegetable can be consumed by people, exchanged (imported and exported) in markets
across the world, used to feed livestock, and/or used as a supplement to nourish crops for future
harvests. Ultimately, the potatoindustry is thriving and will continue because if prepared in the
desired manner potatoes are the most efficient or convenient source of beneficial healthy food. A
downfall that could cripple the potato commerce is if stricter regulations are implemented and
enforced to reduce undesired actions of the fast food(restaurant) industry, which as a result could
cause financial ruins affecting nation s economy and the global market as an entity. According to
the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, the potato crops are the fourth most important crop in
the world and essential vegetable in the United States. Above fifty percent of potato sales are

Swot Analysis Of Westjet Airlines

Introduction
WestJet Airlines is a Canadian airline that differentiates itself with their low cost flights and
exceptional customer service. The company s philosophy is just because you pay less for a flight,
doesn t mean you should get less. WestJet has been growing rapidly since 1996, however, they
believe in growing responsibly by being cautious of their environmental and community impact (

The large difference of ASMs is largely attributed to the fact that Air Canadafocuses on both
domestic and international flights while WestJet mainly focuses on domestic flights. This means
while Air Canada may fly more kilometers than WestJet, the two companies are not so far off from
each other when it comes to gaining customers (Statistics Canada, 2016). WestJet s differentiating
point is their price competitive nature. As a low cost carrier the company values offering guests the
same experience they may receive at higher priced airlines. Air Canada has, however, also began
operating a low cost segment back in 2013 called Air Canada Rouge. WestJet is now looking to
launch an ultra low cost segment, WestJet Swoop in June 2018, targeting guests who are mainly
concerned about getting from one location to another and less concerned about flexibility and
convenience (Dormer, 2017).
Customers WestJet s low cost pricing advantage mainly attracts price sensitive consumers within
the middle to upper middle class. These are individuals who can t afford the more luxurious flights
and/or those who are just looking for a cheap but comfortable ride to their next destination.
Travelers can conveniently purchase airfare through WestJet s website directly, through global
travel websites (i.e. Expedia, Trivago), or through travel agencies. Within the airline industry, the
main concern of consumers is the price as many airlines already offer similar features

Anatomy And Physiology Of The Thyroid Gland
Hypothyroidism is one of the top diseases that goes unnoticed. Not many people know the affects
the thyroid gland can have on the body, and how the thyroid gland has a part in regulating the many
different systems. This paper will explain the anatomy and physiology of the thyroid gland, the
description, sign and symptoms, causes and risk factors, the diagnosis of the disease, and the
possible treatment plans for the disease. The thyroidgland, which is the largest endocrine gland in
adults, is a butterfly shaped gland with two lobes that lie adjacent to the trachea just below the
larynx. The thyroid function runs on hormone regulation, keeping the positive and negative
feedback loop running correctly. The hypothalamus, responsible for most of the hormones in the
body, secretes the thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), which induces the anterior pituitary to
secrete prolactin (PRL) and the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that stimulates the thyroid to
release thyroid hormone(TH). TSH stimulates the growth of the thyroid gland, and TH exerts
metabolic effects. If the TH secretion drops in a healthy thyroid, TSH secretion rises and will
stimulate the thyroid to push out more hormones. If the TSH is too high, the hormone somatostatin
will inhibit the secretion of TSH and the growth hormone (GH). Hypothyroidismis the disease that
causes the thyroid to be underactive and cannot make enough TH for the body to function normally.

The Short Term Mission Trips
Think about the poverty and problems that all countries around the world are facing today and
every day. As Americans we have an urge to go into these countries to help as much as possible
because of that we have begun a revolution. Americans began going on mission trips around the
1960s but did not really pick up until the 1990s. The trend grew after multiple natural disasters,
Americans saw and need and went, since then short term missiontrips show no sign stopping
anytime soon. As the popularity of leaving our comfort zones, many people have found issues with
the way the trips are led to the extent of questioning whether or not these trips are really worth the
amount of money and time that they consume. Through periodicals, interviews, narratives, and
articles, I will show the issues and improvements that could be made to the living situations, attitude
of the Americans, and relationships that are acquired during the short term mission trips.
In October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch slammed onto the coasts of multiple South American
countries. Countless people lost their homes, over eleven thousand people lost their lives, and
the hurricane left five billion dollars worth of damage in its wake ( Hurricane Mitch ). This
event caused a new wave of events also of short term mission trips. Americans seeing the cities
torn to shreds decided to act. For a couple of weeks at a time, different groups would go clean up,

Men of African American descent and those with a prostate cancer family history are considered
to be in a high risk. Therefore, they should start their prostate cancer screening at the age of forty
years. This is approximately ten years earlier than other men who are in the low risk group.
Belonging to the high risk group makes those in the high risk group more susceptible to prostate
cancer.
The main complications that indicate a potential prostate cancer development are; a burning
sensation when urinating, urgency to urinate, and increased frequency in urination coupled with a
fever. These are all symptoms of urinary tract infection which can point towards prostate cancer.
Bladder obstruction is also a prostate cancer pointer. In bladder obstruction, one is unable to urinate

Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream
The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its
unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night
passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this
unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives.
William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he
uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does
through the characters of the play.
Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play.
Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying
in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my
desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3
6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than
waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that
Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our
solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough
the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can
be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey
her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt
my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time
and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it.
Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good
fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult
life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to
Hermia, Whether, if

How Did Tom Brady s Influence On American Football
Several thousand years ago, the Gods played a sport called American Football. They brought
down a legendary football on Earth. They planted the football on a stone in California and
decided that only the best quarterback would be able to pull this football out of the stone. They
would go down in history as a hall of fame player and would be considered the best quarterback to
ever play the game. After the placement of the football, many people, especially quarterbacks, have
tested their strength and luck to pull it from the stone. The present day location of the football was
just outside of CaliforniaMemorial Stadium. None of those who have tried to pull out the football
were successful.
On August 3rd, 1977 a boy named Tom Brady was born. Throughout his childhood he dedicated
most of his time to playing and watching the game of football. Everyday after school he would
go down to California Memorial Stadium to practice playing football with his father. He hoped
that one day he would be a quarterback in the NFL. As years passed and he attended high school
he decided to tryout for the football team. Although he had passion for the sport, his skills lacked

The Pros And Cons Of Pigeonholing
I have decided that since I am attempting to organize my thoughts into coherent and accordant
arguments, it is easier if each topic is framed as a question I can directly answer. The potential
downside of this approach is that I risk at making my responses too simplistic, forcing myself to
take a side. However, I am cognizant of that risk, and reserve the right to look at the potential
answers to each question as lying on a spectrum (or spectrums) of possibilities. I want to be able to
focus my topics without pigeonholing my responses.
There were a number of topics I considered for my first post. Even the process of brainstorming
helped me to categorize areas of interest and relative expertise. Looking at my groupings it is clear
that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If there is no objective reality, independent of our interpretation, then what is it we are sensing?
Why can separate people from different places and times look at the same thing and come to the
same conclusions? The only possible answer here is that there is something constant, objective, and
independent of their interpretation that exists. When I look at the night s sky and see the moon, it
usually looks light yellowish/cream coloured. Other people with slightly different biology and
experiences might see something slightly different, like light green perhaps, but certainly no one
sees a rainbow coloured unicorn. If they do, we would rightly conclude that there is something not
working properly somewhere. Even beings vastly different from ourselves might see something
vastly different than we see, but that would not change the truth that there is a moon there and it is
not a rainbow unicorn. Similarly, in my literature classes, I encourage my students to interpret the
works for themselves. However, if they want to argue that The Great Gatsby was actually set on
Neptune in the year 1734, they have a significant challenge ahead of them. There is a book there
with words that have meanings independent of their interpretation. This is the case for all of reality:
There is an objective truth there, and we bring our individual interpretations to

Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws Essay
Build Up of Suspense in the movie Jaws
The film Jaws has been directed and produced in 1975 by Steven Spielberg. It is about a police
chief that has been assigned to a hot resort on one of New England Coast s beaches. His job is to
make sure that the killer shark, which has already eaten a person in this area, does not have a
chance to attack again.
The film is set on the 4th of July because it is a national holiday in America The Independence
Day. Lots of people organise picnics, go for holidays etc. The New England Coast is an attraction
to tourists and many people visit it during their holidays. In the film the protagonist is chief Brody

After the attack and the disturbing music the dead silence came. This is to highlight the fact that
the girl has been killed in a very brutal and painful way and that nobody could help her, even if they
wanted to. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark
characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks.
Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness
of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is
about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not
survive as previous victims had not survived.
In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the
audience. The scene began with a straight, long shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his
mother to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the
audience feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any
tension because nothing was going to happen at that point. The audience might wonder why so
much time is spent with Alex, why we are continously focused on him, not on any of the other boys

Pants On Fire Analysis
On September 10th, Katie Sanders from PunditFact and former writer from Politifact Florida gave
a speech at the Bob Graham Center titled Pants on Fire: Misinformation in American Politics. The
talk and subsequent Q A centered on the perpetuation of misinformation that is experienced in
contemporary American politics as well as what journalists and common people alike can do to
combat it. Though these were the focal points, three related tangents were my main takeaway from
the experience. During the talk, a statement transported me to the previous week s discussion on
Burgis and Collier. Sanders opened by stating it is important to challenge every statement we read
and take nothing as true until it is verified information. It seemed not only true of American politics
(though it is an essential attitude to maintain when exploring this realm) but of all fields, especially
political science. Many academics argue about whether quantitative data is the apex of research or...

covenant brought suit in Illinois State court attempting to prohibit the Shelley family, who were

party was significantly higher than in the 2000 or 2004 election. This graph depicts how the

2004 to 95% in 2008. The percentage of Hispanics who voted for the Democratic party from 2004
to 2008 also jumped 14%. A reason for this increase in voter turnout is because Hispanic and
African American voters felt that Barak Obama, the Democratic Presidential candidate, was more
capable of solving the problems these minorities felt than a Republican candidate would be.
B.The 2000 an 2004 elections were won by Republican candidate, George Bush. The 20008

Claude Monet Haystacks
Claude Monet was a French artist of the late 1800 s and early 1900 s. He used very gestural
brush strokes in many of his painted, making them less realistic like any of the artist were doing
at the time. He was thought of as the father of Impressionism. Impressionism is taking a image out
of the realism skim and making it looked less real and instead more of a painting. This is done by
the long and large brush strokes in many of Monet s pieces, making them an Impression of an
image rather than going for a photographic look. The movement name actually came from
reviewers stating that the work was an impression of an image rather than its own piece of art.

This made it easy for Mondrian to make the pieces such like haystacks. The elements of the
movement are color, line, and value. In the painting Monet used very bright and dark colors, and
used large brushstroke lines as well. The value is seen in the darkness of the background and the
brightness of the green lilies. This is also seen in many of the other pieces of impressionism in this
time period.
Monet employs the principles of organization through scale, emphasis, contrast, and proportion. He
uses the close up scale of the haystack to show its emphasis in the piece. The contrast of the bright
sky on the darker haystack is very defined as well.
He used many elements of design in his piece as well. Line is a huge one; you can see the lines
from the shadows, the parallel lines of the tops of the haystacks, and the landscape horizontal
line as well. He also showed a ton of space since the haystacks are all on the left side, the right is
a huge open space in the painting. Form is also used in the piece, considering the haystacks look
3D to the human eye. The color and value work together to create the darkness of the haystacks
and shadows, and the light blue of the sky as well. Mass is the last element seen in this piece. The
haystacks seem so massive in the foreground compared to the horizon in the face background of the

The Benefits Of World Hunger
World hunger has become an increasingly prominent issue around the world and in America alike.
People are now getting to the point where they live in such poverty that they cannot afford food to
feed their family or themselves. While commonly thought to only occur in third world countries, it
is becoming an issue in first worldcountries as well as the line between wealthy and poor
continues to grow. Some 795 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a
healthy active life. That s about one in nine people on the earth. The vast majority of the world s
hungry people live in developing countries, where 12.9 percent of the population is
undernourished (FWP.) With this number only continuing to increase, it has been noted that
there must be efforts to stop it. One such action is known as basic income, where every single
person in the country is given a form of social security to live off of. While it has had its up s and
down s, it has been successful overall. As previously mentioned, basic income is a form of social
security that is essentially provided to every citizen of a country, however, there are some
countries where basic income is only granted to those living in poorer parts of the country.
Opponents to the idea often argue that it is very similar to that of a welfare system, where people
are going to be discouraged to work because they are receiving guaranteed money by the
government for doing nothing, though, sometimes it is not the government

Deception By William Shakespeare s Play
In William Shakespeare s play 1 Henry IV, deception is a recurring theme. Main characters King
Henry IV, Hotspur and Prince Hal deceived people to benefit themselves. Were these characters
deceiving their subordinates to gain power or were their choices and actions political strategy
geared toward gaining honor and maintaining the well being of the nation? All three main
characters deceive people to gain power which can be seen as an act of malice and disloyalty but
also as a political strategy. King Henry deceives King Richard II into believing that he is on his
side while he is secretly planning a rebellion, Hotspur does the same to King Henry by deceiving
him into thinking that he is on his side while also secretly planning a rebellion and Prince Hal
deceives the kingdom s people into thinking he is this wild child so they will be more impressed
with him when he becomes the mature prince and adequate potential leader he was expected to be
all along. All of this deceptionbrings up the question, do the characters use deception purely for
their own benefit or for the benefit of the greater good? Shakespeare s use of deception for power
shows these three characters true intentions, for King Henry IV deception is used to gain power
to benefit the kingdom while on the other hand, for Hotspur deception is used to gain power for
his own benefit and the benefit of his family while in Prince Hal s complicated case, deception is
used both for his own benefit and ultimately the

Essay on Traditional African Music
Traditional African Music
An attempt to pin down a single meaning for the word traditional, presents a problem in many
ways. The implications of the word are many, and are tied to various connotations. Some people,
Westerners in particular, may actually shun the traditional, as they feel that it implies a resistance to
modernity. This view is incorrect, and there exists an ethnocentric double standard when Westerners
consider their tradition versus African tradition. Others focus on tradition as that which has always
been done, for whatever reason, and that it must be continued to maintain the community, a
universal balance, a relationship with the gods, or some other goal. Africa and its people have

and the extent to which tradition is acceptable varies within societies, based particularly on the
importance of tradition in music, a societal perception of time, and the junction of maintaining
tradition yet still managing to progress.
?Out with the old and in with the new,? and ?new and improved,? are just two phrases that
express the Western view of the ancient or already existing as needing improvement or change.
Alan Merriam?s description of the Western perception of tradition seems to encapsulate the
essence of Western life. Rather than taking time to enjoy the moment and the current situation,
or to relish the beauty of the arts, there is always an agenda, a purpose, a final goal. There seems
to be no such idea of the present as a time in which to take a break and relax. Instead of
?projecting our future out in front of us as a possible horizon of action, thus throwing a
perspective on our past as presently experienced,? Westerners experience the present as that which
is already past, and choose to focus on the future.i The future represents a time when everything
can be faster, better, stronger, more efficient, more high tech, in other words, continually moving
away from tradition, when it is defined as the old. In a strange way, this goal oriented way of
experiencing life is itself becoming tradition. With industrialization and modernization, the desire
for all aspects of life to be superlative

Causes Of The American Revolution Dbq
The American Revolution was the culmination of tension between the free thinking and developing
Colonists and the dominating and tax imposing British. The war lasted from 1776 to 1783, but the
most important part of the war was the events leading up to it, in which Colonists began to develop
democratic thoughts about their social, political, economic, and religious life. People began to
understand democratic ideas and it s benefits, and many decided to make an active effort to
increase the amount of democracyin their life. Democratic is defined as favoring or characterized
by social equality. A democratic lifestyle is a fair and equal one, and the years leading up to the
revolution brought a democratic environment to the Colonies. Despite lack of greater property
distribution, the 1700s brought great democratic change to Colonial America, which experienced a
democratic movement religiously in the separation of church and state, which led to social changes
including slavery and new thinking, that led to democratic and intellectual political reforms.
Although wealth and property distribution were not changed democratically, the ideas relating to
property distribution and commercial success were democratic and showed democratic progress. A
chart of the wealthiest adult white males in Wethersfield in 1756 and 1775 shows the rich people in
the town staying rich, as 4 out of the 5 wealthiest people kept the wealth within their families

Aesthetic Devices In About A Boy By Nick Hornby
Analysis of Aesthetic devices in About a Boy
About a boy, written in 1998 by Nick Hornby explores the themes of mental health, 1990 s culture
and family through the friendship of two characters; Will, a thirty six year old bachelor and
Marcus, A 12 year old outcast. In about a boy, the author has used a range of aesthetic devices that
shape character representation. An Aesthetic device is an element that authors intentionally use to
create intellectual/emotional responses in their novel. This analytical essay will explore how Nick
Hornby has used irony, point of view and stream of consciousness to shape character representation.
Irony is a technique that is used (through a character or plot development) to convey an intention or
attitude opposite to what is literally stated. In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and
contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of
specific situations. About a Boy by Nick Hornby explores significant issues through the use of
humour. Techniques such as Irony, ridiculous situations and vivid imagery encourage the audience
to laugh while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health,
bullying and relationships. This is meant to elicit an emotional response within the reader. An
example of irony in About A Boy is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a
duck with a loaf of bread foreshadows the solemn event of Fiona s Attempted suicide. The initial
humour of Marcus killing the duck is slapstick. This is evident when the text states Marcus couldn
t believe it. A dead duck. Ok, he tried to hit it with a piece of sandwich and when will says that s
not a sandwich, that s a bloody French loaf. No wonder it keeled over. These two humorous
statements contrast with Fiona s attempted suicide. The dead duck scene combined with Fiona s
attempted suicide encourage the reader to reflect on the seriousness of mental health, as this event
is unexpected after the previous (dead duck) situation.
Point of view is a literary device used to depict the perceptions and opinions of different characters.
Essentially, the point of view allows readers to form a relationship and

Music is a form of art that affects everyone in one way or another. Music is a piece of art that

everyone can relate to music because the lyrics are meaningful in every way just like a story. For
example, XXXTentacion s musicreflects his feelings and his emotional struggles and how he had
problems with suicide and clinical depression. I relate to one of his songs, Everybody Dies in
Their Nightmares .
In this song, he talks about how he is trapped in his mind. The line Tired of feeling like I am
trapped in my damn mind demonstrates this very clearly. By this, he means that he is stuck
feeling the same emotions, is depressed and not able to change. I relate to this line from the song
because I have dealt with a lot of emotional issues related to my childhood. This song is a

China s Economic Growth Mechanism
The article of Yasheng HuangпјЊnamed how did China take offпјЊdiscussing on economic growth
mechanism, mainly come to China s economic reform had the process of financial liberalization.
Furthermore, he pointed out that political reform, financial liberalization and the development of
township enterprises are the key focus on China s development.
Huang argues that the results of China s economic development are mainly due to internal reforms
which are the reforms of China s rural industry. On the contrary, external reforms which made the
contribution in the political sense, such as the establishment of special economic zones and foreign
direct investment(FDI) , is not a general function as township and village enterprises(TVEs) did in
China s economic development.
Huang s paper analyzed the phenomena and causes of the take off in China s economy through four
aspects.
The first part is the beginning of China s economic reform from rural areas, the initial conditions of
China s rural areas are more likely to produce both private entrepreneurship and market economy
than the urban industrialization. Rural reforms also concerned about macroeconomic reform,
especially for the public confidence in the credibility and stability of the government. This reform
is a reform and even a revolution, not what they characterized as modest by some scholars. (Huang)

Hope In The Hunger Games
How Hope Changes and Grows In the first three movies in The Hunger Games series, hope is
present, and it begins to grow and change from movie to movie. Daniel Munday says, Hope
coalesces with other virtues, particularly courage... (1). Therefore, when one person has hope, a
little hope can grow because that said person is courageous enough to help it grow. Katniss
Everdeen helped the hope grow for Panem with her many courageous acts throughout the series
such as volunteering for her sister Prim and becoming Rue s ally (The Hunger Games). With these
acts, she unintentionally started a rebellion and spread hope throughout the country. In the first
movie The Hunger Games, hope seems lost for the people of Panem. They feel as if the games that

and bomb us, and burn us to the ground but do you see that? Fire is catching, and if we burn you

Hope grows within this movie, enough for neutral districts to begin to rebel. One districts blows
up the hydroelectric dam, and another the people in another district conjure up a plan to blow
up the peacekeepers (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1). Not only did hope grow, but it
also changed. It changed from a courageous hope to a more powerful one. It became the driving
force behind the rebellion. It was not just hope that made a person defy the rules of the games or
had them revive a fellow tribute; it was now hope that made the people of Panem band together
and fight the common evil, President Snow. The Hunger Games series is a great representation
of how hope can grow and change with a few simple actions. This series shows how hope can not
only grow but can grow from nothing. In the beginning of the series there was no hope, but at the
end of the third movie, there is an immense amount of hope. It also changed from a mere
courageous hope to a strong and powerful hope that brought the people of Panem together.

Summary Of The Moving Spotlight
In The Moving Spotlight... Cameron offers an advanced philosophical discussion of the ontology of
time, and his contribution to contemporary debate on metaphysics of time (within analytic
philosophy) has already received a vivid response from academics and stimulated further debate. In

(Routledge Studies in Contemporary Philosophy), Routledge 2016, pp. 117 120. 1
Departing from the premises of the A theory of time, The Moving Spotlight s author aims to defend

expected to be familiar with the A Theory and B Theory debate prior to reading this book.
To explain, positions in time, following McTaggart, can be distinguished in two ways: either each
position is earlier or later than some other position (constituting the B series with permanent
relations between positions); or each position is past, present or future (constituting the A series, and
these positions are changeable). An A theorist considers the A series to be essential to the nature of
time, and Cameron presents a version of the moving spotlight view as his preferred version of the A
Theory. To clarify, the moving spotlight theory is characterised by the combination of
permanentism, the thesis that everything exists forever, and the A theory, the thesis that there is an
absolute, objective present time 2. In Cameron s

A Night of Neo-Psychedelia and Paisley Underground
On Saturday May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo psychedelia and Paisley
Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest D J s ,
Eric Slick from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played songs LP s and
45 s in between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music
business. He is the drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B Room. The album is a
group project and is the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is
disappointing to hear that sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good
effort. Folks take our music we make our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks
would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet feel comfortable taking an artist s work. Thanks
for coming and adding a little more color to a very musically colorful night. Weekender came out
first and set the mood with their dreamy Paisley Underground cuts from their album, Spanish
Peaks. Nick and Eric Sheehan write the music and play drums and guitar. Tom Anthony and
Emily Cahiel added depth with vocals and guitars. Emily s harmony gave the vocals that far off
Blue Oyster Cult feel. I heard a lot of my favorites in their music, The Moody Blues. The Strawbs,
Jefferson Airplane and Blue Oyster Cult. This was most evident in the first song LSD and the Age
of Interest and the last song Spanish Peaks which is also

My Day Of School After Winter Break
Numb Toes and Good Times
There are not many things I love more than the smell of pine trees, the cold brisk wind of the
first snowfall, and the joy of Christmas time. I can see myself now, getting released on my last
day of school before winter break. Second grade might not have been a struggle, but a couple
weeks off of school was just what a little me needed. I trudged home through the snow and slush.
The sidewalks were almost non existent in Michigan winters; you had to search for footprints
made by others or risk a rolled ankle. Muddy slush seeped into my snow boots, yet still I had a grin
peeled across my face. This smile was mostly a result of the day approaching, December 25th.
Christmas mostly meant a couple things to me when I was little, presents, candy, and my favorite
vacation out west to the mountains. The Christmas card had already sent out that year, it was all
seven of us; heads morphed onto the Little Rascals characters. At the time this was probably
relatively funny, but now it s pretty much just embarrassing. The poems on the cards were always
the best, I m sure my second grader friends couldn t interpret the jokes my mom wrote, but their
moms would. We would start planning our Christmas cards around September, it was way too
early but I guess it was necessary, to create a comic masterpiece. I never understood how she made
everything rhyme and flow so well, it still amazes me to this day.
When I finally made it home, like clockwork, my mom yelled at me

Essay On Exclusionary Rule
The Exclusionary Rule The exclusionary rule exists so that the government cannot use evidence if
it is seized in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution (Carlson, 2017).
That is to say that there are certain requirements that are needed in different situations to search an
individual. Each situation is different It should be noted that different situations will create
different standards and requirements as it pertains to searching and individual or property. As an
example, there is the exigent circumstances clause. This clause states that it there is a reasonable
likelihood of physical harm to the officer or others or there is a reasonable expectation that
evidence is being destroyed or a suspect is escaping, there is no need for a warrant to conduct the
search (Busby, 2017). In contrast, an officer who has probable cause to believe a residence contains
evidence of criminal activity, but has none of the aforementioned situations, must obtain a valid
search warrant before conducting the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The checks and balances system exists to make sure that all individuals are afforded the right to
unreasonable searches and seizures. As described above, the Fourth Amendment has exceptions for
situations that can cause potential harm to individuals or destruction of evidence. The
administrative system in place is not only practical, but also necessary. Meaning, without these
standards and exceptions there would be way too many decisions left up to the individual officer
involved. This would create a situation where the rights of individuals would inevitably be
violated. As a police officer, I ve worked within this system for almost 27 years and I trust the
system. It holds me accountable as well as my fellow officers. Although the system can be
frustrating at times, it is practical and

A brain is a wonderful thing to have. Why waste it? Well, research shows that reading makes you
smarter. Although you may not notice but you read every day. From little things like a stop sign

The Adverse Effects of TV Essay examples
Years ago, society was full of hard working, fit, energetic people who diligently worked to
improve civilization. But then, society became infected by television. The virus slowly spread
from person to person and began to take over the lives of everyone it encountered. Over the course
of eight decades, the virus came to dictate every day activities and transformed a spirited species
into languid losers. Television has ultimately turned society into a vegetable garden that is
controlled by technological innovations that manipulate the order of our everyday lives. Those who
recognize the harm caused by technologydeclare that television is slowly replacing the education
and determination of mankind. With innovations such as Google and... Show more content on

Opponents of the advantages of television recognize that television, along with other technology, is
threatening the safety of American society as it advances more and more. These so called
improvements manipulate mankind into relying on technology for nearly everything, further
weakening the willpower of the human race to challenge this mistreatment. A theory formulated by
Raymond Kurzweil states that America is approaching a moment approximately 2045 where
computers will exceed the intelligence of the human brain. When that happens, artificial
intelligence will exist with mankind it may even have the ability to reproduce itself. The theory is
easily believed when people recognize the fact that computers and other forms of technology are
getting faster at an increasing rate. People rely on computers for work ethic, television for
entertainment, and internet for social relationships. If man does not change its habits and work to
inhibit their reliance on technology, the reality of 2045 is imminent. The human species will evolve
into a form that is not even comparable to the present condition of mankind we will soon be a
society driven by laziness and stupidity. Technological advancements must be put under control
before America reaches an age where artificial intelligence outweighs human life. Television,
computers, and other technological innovation may seem beneficial right now, but if they

Different Forms Of Co Teaching
Lauren Dursky and I decided that we would implement different forms of co teaching for different
subjects. It did not seem efficient to use the same method for each subject, so we decided to vary
the instruction. For math, we decided to use station teaching. This allows students to discover a true
understanding of each concept through different activities. This style of co teachingalso allows each
teacher to incorporate his or her own unique perspective into the classroom. This style could be
challenging for math because it requires extra planning and you have to make sure both teachers
are teaching similar methods at the same time so movement from one station to the next is
smooth. We then decided to use the teaming method for history. The teaming method allows both
teachers to present their own views to the class and bounce ideas off of each other (The Power of
2, 2005). Instead of using textbooks to teach history, we decided to take a concept and explore its
significance through events and debates. We would start off by each presenting a different point of
view on a single event and have students divide into two groups based on their initial thoughts.
Each teacher would then lead their portion of the class through research and constructing a debate.
After a couple days spent learning about the situation and preparing an argument, the two halves of
the class would debate.
For language arts we decided to use the parallel teaching method. This method allows for small

Essay On Landscapes R Us
Situation analysis
Alex Joyce u3108297
Dude date: week 6 Friday
Chosen topic: Landscapes R Us
Introduction
This situation analysis is based on the Landscapes r us business. In this report we will cover the
following, assessment of the uncontrollable environment (PESTL forces), a SWOT analysis, the
target market and a customer and client analysis,
Uncontrollable environment, PESTL
Political forces
Landscapes r us, are faced by several political forces that may influence the amount of work and
the way business will operate. There is a trend of new suburbs being divided into smaller blocks
then older suburbs. In the 1950 s the average block size was 810sqm 910 sq m, and block
divided in 2012 average between 200 350 sq m (MacroBusiness, 2014)(Hall, 2011). Therefore,
each successful tender in new suburbs isn t as profitable as before, because there is less work
required on each block. Because there are a greater number of blocks it creates a large number of
opportunities to win quotes. When there are more quotes in an area it will attract more businesses
competition.
Economic forces
The announcement of the current federal budget by the Abbot government is driving the message
of cutting Australia s debt. There are threats of lots of job cuts especially in Canberra where the
Public service is a major employer with n unemployment rate of 6.4% (Rba.gov.au, 2014). In turn
this means people have less disposable income to be spent on landscaping work. As landscaping is a

Essay about Domestic vs International Adoption
In today s society, the idea of adoption is an open and welcome one. However, the biggest
decision in adoption today is whether to adopt domestically or internationally. There is a very
large growing trend in international adoptions today. Compared to adoption rates in 1987, in 2004
international adoptions had risen over 200% as compared to an 8% rise in domestic adoptions.
After World War II, international adoptions began to rise because Americans began adopting
European and Japanese war orphans. However, this was not the only reason for international
adoptions. Desperate poverty and social upheaval such as the one child law in China, are factors
that have led others to adopt from Latin America and China. Also, after the Child... Show more

Next, a couple must realize that in both international and domestic adoptions, there is a risk of the
adoption not working out. In a domestic adoption, birth mothers can change their mind until they
sign the legal paperwork. Each state varies on their time frames a birth mother can sign her
paperwork, however most states allow the birth mother to sign 48 72 hours after the baby is
born. From that point on, in most states, the birth mother cannot change her mind. In
international adoptions countries can and do shut down all adoptions in their country. This
means any adoptions in the process are stopped. You could be interested in adopting a certain
child and it is not uncommon for the orphanage to promise this child to several agencies. The
orphanage s goal is to place the children as soon as possible. On the plus side though,
international adoptions are more lenient on who they let adopt. This can be a positive for many
couples wanting to adopt that are not allowed to adopt domestically. Specifically, homosexual
couples are welcomed in international adoptions, yet in some states are not legally allowed to
adopt. Also, there are age restrictions for parents over the age of forty that do not apply for
international adoption. One of the biggest factors couples consider, especially concerning
international adoptions is the idea of travel. In a domestic adoption only

Population Health Promotion Model
As high rates of drug used among aboriginals is linked to poverty, inability to cope, income, and
education it is imperative to resolve the drug issue. In order to lower the rate of drug use among
aboriginals, proper education must be disseminated. Creating a supportive environment is a strategy
that can help in educating the aboriginals how to get out of poverty. As demonstrated in a study
many interviews expressed the need to be educated about drugs, but expressed it should take in
consideration their culture. This would also mean community immersion and understanding
Aboriginals as a people, not just statistical facts (Theng Al, 2013). The government and marketing
campaigns in collaborations with the community healthnurses can implement this strategy through
various activities such as creating poster/pamphlets in Aboriginals languages; organizing cost free
informative sessions in their locale to help them cope better in their everyday life. This way
Aboriginals can access quality education about the substance abuse, symptoms and how to cope
better with underlying issues... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

population consist in income, education, employment, and socio economic status. The level of
action, or the who we need to work with to resolve the issue, is the community. Finally, the
strategies needed to be implemented are community mobilization and community development. To

Summary Of Giorgio Agamben s Homo Sacer
Giorgio Agamben s book Homo Sacer begins by addressing the topics of bare life and
meaningful socially contextualized life in relation to the philosophical terms of zoД“ and bios
respectively. Agamben toys with the idea that sovereignty naturally coincides with bios,
whereas zoД“ is only included in politics in the form of exception. (Agamben 10) This assertion
runs parralel to the idea of atavism, which is essentially the principle that humans can often
revert to primal and ancestral behaviors when left unchecked by society. This reversion is
generally regarded as a violent and undesirable; philsophers such as Hobbes would certainly feel
that atavism is partially responsible for the life of man being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and
short, which is a core thematic component of his work Leviathan. (Hobbes 78) Despite Agamben
and Hobbes s shared notion that primitive behaviors fall outside the natural sphere of politics and
are relatively negative, there is a strong case to be made for atavism s role in positive human
sociopolitical structures. One such positive instance is familial structures. Although the concept of
sovereigntycan be expressed through the father figure and paternal subjugation, and the concept of
bare life can be established philosphically by the figure of the mother and an individual s birth, it it
nontheless true that human beings seek out families and attempt to live in concordance with their
parents , siblings , and childrens needs and desires

The And Disease Of The Roman Empire
Throughout history the human race has been faced with one key factor that no one civilization
has even been able to beat, not the might of the Roman Byzantine Empire, nor the combined
efforts of the entirety of Europe and their scholars could defeat this recurring foe. Pandemics,
from the Greek pan meaning all, and demos meaning people (Harper Etymonline.com), are these
indiscriminate killers whom care not for your social standing be it wealth, fame, or glory.
Humans have contested with disease ever since the infantile stages of the species, but the ability
of it to spread was severely inhibited by the fact that humans stayed in small groups of 10 30
people at most, giving the virus or disease severely hampered virulence. It was not till humans
began gathering in larger, more permanent settlements such as the early Classical cities of Athens,
Ramses, and Rome, that the issue of sanitation and disease came into effect. This has not to say
that our issues with sanitation and disease prevention have stopped, rather have they been brought
forward into the limelight, many nations around the world today have issues with age old diseases
and give rise to extremely deadly new viruses of their own. To fully understand the effect of
pandemics in history, then one must consider three major plagues of our recorded history, the first
pandemic Plague of Athens , the pivotal Plague of Justinian, and the infamous Black Death
The first pandemic known to recorded history was the

Matthew s Gospel
The Gospel of Matthew presents the promised Messiah, the immaculate Savior and King of the
Jews. Matthew s Gospel has a clear purpose and is unique for its linkage of the New and Old
Testament through Jesus Christ. Matthew shows ages of prophecy fulfilled through a single life
span of one man s life. The fulfillment of the law is found in Christ and he recapitulates Israel in
a condensed manner perfectly. The Gospel, also goes on to show the Israelites rejection of Christ
as their Savior, their King and depicts a new gathering of people to Christ.
Most Jews in the days of Jesus missed his coming. Their preconceived notion of who their savior
king should be lead many of them astray. Jesus, however, turned these notions upside down. He was

Unlike the other Gospels, Matthew stresses the royal and Jewish heritage of Jesus identity.
Throughout his Gospel, Jesus is identified as the son of David or the son of Abraham. By doing
this Matthew is establishing a link between the Old and New Testament and portraying Jesus as
the fulfillment to all the Old Testament prophecies. Jesus displays his royal authority repetitively
throughout Matthew s Gospel. Matthew 21:1 11 narrates the triumphal entry of Jesus into
Jerusalem; here Jesus expresses a prerogative of royalty. Jesus sends two disciples into the next
town to retrieve a donkey and a colt; if they were asked by anyone who it was for, the disciples
were to reply the Lord has need of them (v.2 3). The borrowing of the animals testifies to Jesus
status and his foreknowledge. Matthew is not concentrating on the animals as a possession as he is
on Christ as the rightful king having a right to anything in

Circus Maximus Essay
Circus Maximus, Rome

Did you know that Circus Maximus could seat nearly a quarter of Rome s population? That s
why it was one of the biggest and best arenas in ancient Rome. It could seat 250,000 spectators,
and had 300,000 seats. It was HUGE, 2037 feet in length and 387 feet in width. It had a
circumference of a mile. It was situated between 2 hills, the Aventine and Palatine hills, and when it
started, spectators watched from there. It had its share of blood and difficulties, but it can t be
denied that Circus Maximus was awe inspiring.
The Circus Maximus was one of the best constructed buildings in ancient Rome, able to withstand a
lot! After burning down twice, It was reconstructed using concrete and marble, making it stronger
and more beautiful than ever (romeguide.it). It was originally made entirely of wood, making it
easier for it to catch fire or collapse, as it also did twice (romeguide.it). There was a separate
imperial box for the Emperor and the royal family, making it a more popular place with important
persons and the Emperor himself (tribunesandtriumphs.org). After its being reconstructed for the
second time by Trajan, Pliny the Younger stated that it rivaled even the beauty of the temples...

Maximus had 300,000 seats, as I said before, so lots of Romans could come to events, boosting
the popularity of the Circus (romeguide.it). Finally, the Circus also hosted religious events, and
inside there was a built in shrine and 2 huge obelisks, the smaller of which was 88 feet high

High School Scholarship Essay For the Fairfield High School Scholarship Application, the essay requirement states: Attach an essay explaining your outstanding loyalty and service to your school, community and family. Include how your future plans will involve service to others. Write a 300 500 word essay on the above topic. In my four years as a Fairfield Eagle, I have come to a new understanding of our school motto, A Tradition of Excellence. Excellence in our school is something that we boast about regularly throughout our community. For example, what community can boast of a football program that, in the last decade, has been to more state championship games than any other school? What community can boast of a girls basketball program that held a 104 0 record with three back to back titles, and a total of four? My answer: Fairfield can. Therefore, nothing is a bigger source of pride or, more inspiring than being a part of a community that should never have achieved such a high level of success. Consequently, through A Tradition of Excellence , we commit ourselves to the path of becoming something better, and what better to take with us into the future than the desire to constantly push for the best that we can hope to be? ... • 5. Laurel Hill Duke Forest Report Laurel Hill in Duke Forest Report At Laurel Hill Duke Forest there is a large granodiorite cliff adjacent to a river on one side. This cliff is not smooth and has several parallel fractures instead of one steep slope. Observations of this cliff were taken in order to gather data and find possible explanations for why this cliff is where it is located and why the river adjacent to it follows a V shaped path. One observation was that the range of the strikes and dips of the fractures facing river were all near parallel ranging from strike of 170 190 degrees and dips ranging from 70 90 degrees. There were other fractures oriented differently on other sides of the outcrop. Also, the surface of the outcrop was highly weathered in some parts where the rocktype was not distinguishable without using a rock hammer and had moss growing over it. On the first side of the outcrop the rock when examined was greenish and had small black grains indicative of diorite with hornblende giving the green color. The rock was similar to the outcrop encountered at Hollow rock which also had several fractures parallel although not as many, and that outcrop was also highly weathered. The rain and wind washes away and erodes softer rocks separating them from harder rocks forming a sharp crack after the fracture occurs and the rocks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When, reading An Absolute Diary of A Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie, I saw how the protagonist Arnold was able to gain support from his tribes while discovering strengths inside of himself that he never knew existed. In comparison, I discovered while reading The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier, the protagonist Jerry had the foundations of support, but it ended up crumbling when he needed the support the most. Why was Arnold able to become an individual while being a member of numerous tribes, when Jerry s tribes didn t support him for being an individual? Jerry, a freshman who comes into Trinity and is able to throw off its balance. He is able to defy the Vigils and that action alone is huge, because no one has ever dared to defy them before because the Vigils are their own tribe at Trinity. Jerry is able to disturb the tribe and almost rally supporters behind him, but it doesn t last very long and Jerry is singled out by the Vigils. For many centuries, potatoes have been utilized to feed a variety people including those who made historical strides. For example, an icon such as Christopher Columbus went on sea vogues for extended periods of time and he had to store supplies and resources that had long shelf life and nonperishable items. Since the versatility of potatoes are endless the purpose of this particular vegetable can be consumed by people, exchanged (imported and exported) in markets across the world, used to feed livestock, and/or used as a supplement to nourish crops for future harvests. Ultimately, the potatoindustry is thriving and will continue because if prepared in the desired manner potatoes are the most efficient or convenient source of beneficial healthy food. A downfall that could cripple the potato commerce is if stricter regulations are implemented and enforced to reduce undesired actions of the fast food(restaurant) industry, which as a result could cause financial ruins affecting nation s economy and the global market as an entity. According to the Agricultural Marketing Resource Center, the potato crops are the fourth most important crop in the world and essential vegetable in the United States. The large difference of ASMs is largely attributed to the fact that Air Canadafocuses on both domestic and international flights while WestJet mainly focuses on domestic flights. This means while Air Canada may fly more kilometers than WestJet, the two companies are not so far off from each other when it comes to gaining customers (Statistics Canada, 2016). WestJet s differentiating point is their price competitive nature. As a low cost carrier the company values offering guests the same experience they may receive at higher priced airlines. Air Canada has, however, also began operating a low cost segment back in 2013 called Air Canada Rouge. WestJet is now looking to launch an ultra low cost segment, WestJet Swoop in June 2018, targeting guests who are mainly concerned about getting from one location to another and less concerned about flexibility and convenience (Dormer, 2017). Customers WestJet s low cost pricing advantage mainly attracts price sensitive consumers within the middle to upper middle class. These are individuals who can t afford the more luxurious flights and/or those who are just looking for a cheap but comfortable ride to their next destination. • 16. Anatomy And Physiology Of The Thyroid Gland Hypothyroidism is one of the top diseases that goes unnoticed. Not many people know the affects the thyroid gland can have on the body, and how the thyroid gland has a part in regulating the many different systems. This paper will explain the anatomy and physiology of the thyroid gland, the description, sign and symptoms, causes and risk factors, the diagnosis of the disease, and the possible treatment plans for the disease. The thyroidgland, which is the largest endocrine gland in adults, is a butterfly shaped gland with two lobes that lie adjacent to the trachea just below the larynx. The thyroid function runs on hormone regulation, keeping the positive and negative feedback loop running correctly. The hypothalamus, responsible for most of the hormones in the body, secretes the thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), which induces the anterior pituitary to secrete prolactin (PRL) and the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) that stimulates the thyroid to release thyroid hormone(TH). TSH stimulates the growth of the thyroid gland, and TH exerts metabolic effects. If the TH secretion drops in a healthy thyroid, TSH secretion rises and will stimulate the thyroid to push out more hormones. If the TSH is too high, the hormone somatostatin will inhibit the secretion of TSH and the growth hormone (GH). Hypothyroidismis the disease that causes the thyroid to be underactive and cannot make enough TH for the body to function normally. The body s metabolic effects rely on the ... • 21. Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives. William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does through the characters of the play. Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play. Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3 6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it. Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to Hermia, Whether, if ... If there is no objective reality, independent of our interpretation, then what is it we are sensing? Why can separate people from different places and times look at the same thing and come to the same conclusions? The only possible answer here is that there is something constant, objective, and independent of their interpretation that exists. When I look at the night s sky and see the moon, it usually looks light yellowish/cream coloured. Other people with slightly different biology and experiences might see something slightly different, like light green perhaps, but certainly no one sees a rainbow coloured unicorn. If they do, we would rightly conclude that there is something not working properly somewhere. Even beings vastly different from ourselves might see something vastly different than we see, but that would not change the truth that there is a moon there and it is not a rainbow unicorn. Similarly, in my literature classes, I encourage my students to interpret the works for themselves. However, if they want to argue that The Great Gatsby was actually set on Neptune in the year 1734, they have a significant challenge ahead of them. There is a book there with words that have meanings independent of their interpretation. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks. Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not survive as previous victims had not survived. In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the audience. The scene began with a straight, long shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his mother to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the audience feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any tension because nothing was going to happen at that point. He used very gestural brush strokes in many of his painted, making them less realistic like any of the artist were doing at the time. He was thought of as the father of Impressionism. Impressionism is taking a image out of the realism skim and making it looked less real and instead more of a painting. This is done by the long and large brush strokes in many of Monet s pieces, making them an Impression of an image rather than going for a photographic look. This is also seen in many of the other pieces of impressionism in this time period. Monet employs the principles of organization through scale, emphasis, contrast, and proportion. He uses the close up scale of the haystack to show its emphasis in the piece. The contrast of the bright sky on the darker haystack is very defined as well. He used many elements of design in his piece as well. All three main characters deceive people to gain power which can be seen as an act of malice and disloyalty but also as a political strategy. Alan Merriam?s description of the Western perception of tradition seems to encapsulate the essence of Western life. Rather than taking time to enjoy the moment and the current situation, or to relish the beauty of the arts, there is always an agenda, a purpose, a final goal. There seems to be no such idea of the present as a time in which to take a break and relax. Instead of ?projecting our future out in front of us as a possible horizon of action, thus throwing a perspective on our past as presently experienced,? Westerners experience the present as that which is already past, and choose to focus on the future.i The future represents a time when everything can be faster, better, stronger, more efficient, more high tech, in other words, continually moving away from tradition, when it is defined as the old. • 33. Causes Of The American Revolution Dbq The American Revolution was the culmination of tension between the free thinking and developing Colonists and the dominating and tax imposing British. The war lasted from 1776 to 1783, but the most important part of the war was the events leading up to it, in which Colonists began to develop democratic thoughts about their social, political, economic, and religious life. People began to understand democratic ideas and it s benefits, and many decided to make an active effort to increase the amount of democracyin their life. Democratic is defined as favoring or characterized by social equality. A democratic lifestyle is a fair and equal one, and the years leading up to the revolution brought a democratic environment to the Colonies. Despite lack of greater property distribution, the 1700s brought great democratic change to Colonial America, which experienced a democratic movement religiously in the separation of church and state, which led to social changes including slavery and new thinking, that led to democratic and intellectual political reforms. Although wealth and property distribution were not changed democratically, the ideas relating to property distribution and commercial success were democratic and showed democratic progress. • 34. Aesthetic Devices In About A Boy By Nick Hornby Analysis of Aesthetic devices in About a Boy About a boy, written in 1998 by Nick Hornby explores the themes of mental health, 1990 s culture and family through the friendship of two characters; Will, a thirty six year old bachelor and Marcus, A 12 year old outcast. In about a boy, the author has used a range of aesthetic devices that shape character representation. An Aesthetic device is an element that authors intentionally use to create intellectual/emotional responses in their novel. This analytical essay will explore how Nick Hornby has used irony, point of view and stream of consciousness to shape character representation. Irony is a technique that is used (through a character or plot development) to convey an intention or attitude opposite to what is literally stated. In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of specific situations. About a Boy by Nick Hornby explores significant issues through the use of humour. Techniques such as Irony, ridiculous situations and vivid imagery encourage the audience to laugh while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health, bullying and relationships. This is meant to elicit an emotional response within the reader. An example of irony in About A Boy is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a duck with a loaf of bread foreshadows the solemn event of Fiona s Attempted suicide. The initial humour of Marcus killing the duck is slapstick. This is evident when the text states Marcus couldn t believe it. A dead duck. Ok, he tried to hit it with a piece of sandwich and when will says that s not a sandwich, that s a bloody French loaf. No wonder it keeled over. These two humorous statements contrast with Fiona s attempted suicide. The dead duck scene combined with Fiona s attempted suicide encourage the reader to reflect on the seriousness of mental health, as this event is unexpected after the previous (dead duck) situation. Point of view is a literary device used to depict the perceptions and opinions of different characters. Essentially, the point of view allows readers to form a relationship and ... Music is a piece of art that fully reflects the artist s feelings or lifelong experiences. Art affects everyone emotionally and everyone can relate to music because the lyrics are meaningful in every way just like a story. For example, XXXTentacion s musicreflects his feelings and his emotional struggles and how he had problems with suicide and clinical depression. I relate to one of his songs, Everybody Dies in Their Nightmares . In this song, he talks about how he is trapped in his mind. The line Tired of feeling like I am trapped in my damn mind demonstrates this very clearly. By this, he means that he is stuck feeling the same emotions, is depressed and not able to change. I relate to this line from the song because I have dealt with a lot of emotional issues related to my childhood. The first part is the beginning of China s economic reform from rural areas, the initial conditions of China s rural areas are more likely to produce both private entrepreneurship and market economy than the urban industrialization. Rural reforms also concerned about macroeconomic reform, especially for the public confidence in the credibility and stability of the government. An A theorist considers the A series to be essential to the nature of time, and Cameron presents a version of the moving spotlight view as his preferred version of the A Theory. My Day Of School After Winter Break Numb Toes and Good Times There are not many things I love more than the smell of pine trees, the cold brisk wind of the first snowfall, and the joy of Christmas time. I can see myself now, getting released on my last day of school before winter break. Second grade might not have been a struggle, but a couple weeks off of school was just what a little me needed. I trudged home through the snow and slush. The sidewalks were almost non existent in Michigan winters; you had to search for footprints made by others or risk a rolled ankle. Muddy slush seeped into my snow boots, yet still I had a grin peeled across my face. This smile was mostly a result of the day approaching, December 25th. Christmas mostly meant a couple things to me when I was little, presents, candy, and my favorite vacation out west to the mountains. The Christmas card had already sent out that year, it was all seven of us; heads morphed onto the Little Rascals characters. It did not seem efficient to use the same method for each subject, so we decided to vary the instruction. For math, we decided to use station teaching. This allows students to discover a true understanding of each concept through different activities. This style of co teachingalso allows each teacher to incorporate his or her own unique perspective into the classroom. This style could be challenging for math because it requires extra planning and you have to make sure both teachers are teaching similar methods at the same time so movement from one station to the next is smooth. We then decided to use the teaming method for history. The teaming method allows both teachers to present their own views to the class and bounce ideas off of each other (The Power of 2, 2005). Instead of using textbooks to teach history, we decided to take a concept and explore its significance through events and debates. We would start off by each presenting a different point of view on a single event and have students divide into two groups based on their initial thoughts. Each teacher would then lead their portion of the class through research and constructing a debate. • 52. Summary Of Giorgio Agamben s Homo Sacer Giorgio Agamben s book Homo Sacer begins by addressing the topics of bare life and meaningful socially contextualized life in relation to the philosophical terms of zoД“ and bios respectively. Agamben toys with the idea that sovereignty naturally coincides with bios, whereas zoД“ is only included in politics in the form of exception. (Agamben 10) This assertion runs parralel to the idea of atavism, which is essentially the principle that humans can often revert to primal and ancestral behaviors when left unchecked by society. This reversion is generally regarded as a violent and undesirable; philsophers such as Hobbes would certainly feel that atavism is partially responsible for the life of man being solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short, which is a core thematic component of his work Leviathan. (Hobbes 78) Despite Agamben and Hobbes s shared notion that primitive behaviors fall outside the natural sphere of politics and are relatively negative, there is a strong case to be made for atavism s role in positive human sociopolitical structures. One such positive instance is familial structures. Although the concept of sovereigntycan be expressed through the father figure and paternal subjugation, and the concept of bare life can be established philosphically by the figure of the mother and an individual s birth, it it nontheless true that human beings seek out families and attempt to live in concordance with their parents , siblings , and childrens needs and desires ... Unlike the other Gospels, Matthew stresses the royal and Jewish heritage of Jesus identity. Throughout his Gospel, Jesus is identified as the son of David or the son of Abraham. By doing this Matthew is establishing a link between the Old and New Testament and portraying Jesus as the fulfillment to all the Old Testament prophecies. Jesus displays his royal authority repetitively throughout Matthew s Gospel. Matthew 21:1 11 narrates the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem; here Jesus expresses a prerogative of royalty. Jesus sends two disciples into the next town to retrieve a donkey and a colt; if they were asked by anyone who it was for, the disciples were to reply the Lord has need of them (v.2 3). The borrowing of the animals testifies to Jesus status and his foreknowledge. Matthew is not concentrating on the animals as a possession as he is on Christ as the rightful king having a right to anything in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
