Kirsi Kuoppamäki - How to improve water and nutrient retention in green roofs?
1) Green roofs can help manage stormwater but often flooding still occurs due to heavy rainfall exceeding infrastructure design capacities. Implementing green infrastructure like green roofs may help reduce flooding by retaining water.
2) Studies show biochar amendment to green roof substrates can significantly improve nutrient retention and water holding capacity. Biochar reduced nitrogen and phosphorus loads in runoff by 40% and 35% respectively in one study.
3) Preliminary research also found crushed concrete substrates amended with biochar and limestone showed potential for good nutrient retention and water holding. Further research on biochar and mycorrhizal amendments in crushed concrete is warranted.

Defining, Measuring, and Incentivizing Sustainable Land Use
This document discusses defining, measuring, and incentivizing sustainable land use to meet human needs. It examines land use change scenarios in Sweden and their impacts on ecosystem services. The scenarios include a current land use scenario, a scenario that doubles cereal production, and an intensified production scenario. Modeling results show that increasing or intensifying crop production decreases nitrogen retention by around 40% compared to current land use. The document advocates finding an optimal tradeoff between conflicting ecosystem services like food production and biodiversity loss.

Hydro is the most well-established form of renewable electricity production.
Hydro comprised about 80% of all of the renewable electricity capacity in the world, and accounted for about 20% of global electricity production capacity.
Hydropower is also the most efficient means we know of to convert energy into electricity.
Typically 85%-95% of the energy in water is converted to electricity, compared to 15%-20% for PV solar, 35%-45% for wind, and 30%-45% for coal.

WWF-UK partners with businesses like Coca-Cola to improve water stewardship in catchments. They work with farmers to reduce agricultural impacts through solutions that benefit both the environment and business. WWF-UK also partners on river restoration projects, and works to quantify the water benefits of these projects to demonstrate returns on investment to partners.

Rising demand for limited land resources leads to increased competition for land usage. There are three main responses to address this issue: increasing land prices, increasing land supply, and land conservation. One way to increase land supply is through land clearance, which involves demolishing old buildings or clearing forests to free up land for development. While land clearance provides more land for housing and agriculture, it can negatively impact the environment by destroying habitats and increasing soil erosion and water pollution.
Land and water resources
Land and water resources make up 70% and 30% of the Earth's surface respectively. Overpopulation puts pressure on these limited resources. Key uses of land include agriculture, housing, recreation, and industry. Urbanization is driven by factors like improved job opportunities and social services in cities, leading to rural population shifts. Solutions to water scarcity involve desalination, recycling, catchment expansion, conservation, and international cooperation.
8. CaBA Conference 2017 Eurasian Beaver - Alan Puttock
Beaver reintroduction projects in the UK are quantifying the multiple environmental benefits of beavers. Data from the Devon Beaver Project shows that beaver dams increase water storage, attenuate peak flows, and may filter diffuse pollutants. Over 100 tons of sediment and 15 tons of carbon have been stored in ponds on the site. The Cornwall Beaver Project is monitoring the impacts of beavers on a larger second order tributary catchment. The River Otter Beaver Trial is assessing beaver impacts at the full catchment scale of 250 square kilometers. Rising demand for limited land resources leads to increased competition for land usage. There are three main responses to address this issue: increasing land prices, increasing land supply, and land conservation. One way to increase land supply is through land clearance, which involves demolishing old buildings or clearing forests to free up land for development. While land clearance provides more land for housing and agriculture, it can negatively impact the environment by destroying habitats and increasing soil erosion and water pollution.
Land and water resources
Land and water resources make up 70% and 30% of the Earth's surface respectively. Overpopulation puts pressure on these limited resources. Key uses of land include agriculture, housing, recreation, and industry. Urbanization is driven by factors like improved job opportunities and social services in cities, leading to rural population shifts. Solutions to water scarcity involve desalination, recycling, catchment expansion, conservation, and international cooperation.

Ubic YAPC 2012
Ubic is a flexible Perl-based polymorphic service manager. It allows services to be configured and managed through Perl code and provides APIs for starting, stopping and checking the status of services. Services can inherit behaviors from other service classes and be organized hierarchically into multiservices. The service state is persisted even after reboots. Various service loaders allow services to be configured through different file formats like ini files to support non-Perl users. The project aims to improve cross-platform support and provide additional features through plugins.

Doug Treder will give a one hour talk about Moose, a new object system for Perl 5 that aims to address shortcomings of Perl's native object system. Some of the ideas and wording in the presentation were borrowed from Stevan Little's Moose presentations and cookbooks. In 1994, she founded Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) to prepare young people to become voices for peace and justice. Under her leadership, YMPJ developed riverside parks, restored the Bronx River and improved access to it, and cleaned up brownfields. New report offers sobering view of the energy transition
Every year the Statistical Review of World Energy offers a behemoth of data on the state of the global energy market. This year’s findings highlight the world’s insatiable demand for energy and the need to speed up the pace of decarbonisation.
Here are our four main takeaways from this year’s report:
Fossil fuel consumption — and emissions — are at record highs
Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time.
Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption.
