The City of Big Spring Texas was in severe drought and running out of fresh water. Augmenting freshwater supplies with purified wastewater was the best economical solution. Purifying wastewater to better-than-drinking standards flipped the cost of operating a wastewater plant to a revenue generator, simply by adding more treatment technology. This presentation, from the Florida Water Resources Conference, explains the rationale for selecting UV Oxidation as part of the proven treatment train.

There are a number of key drivers for end users that are encouraging a more system based approach to water and energy management on WWTP campuses including: drought (and the corresponding need for greater water reclamation), integration of renewables and storage, energy efficiency and demand response practices to match load with energy supply, overarching decarbonization strategies, system resiliency and reliability, and higher standards for water quality. This presentation describes the transformation of WasteWater Treatment Centers to Resource Centers.

U.S. Water Alliance

Austin Water is engaged in aggressive water conservation and climate programs aimed at reducing water use and addressing the water-energy nexus, while continuing to provide reliable and sustainable water and wastewater service to customers. The programs include: mandatory watering restrictions; installation of renewable energy at plants and facilities; and implementing employee ideas to save energy in operations – all while dealing with the worst drought since the historic drought of the 1950s.

Murphy, US Forest Service Northeastern Area In 2010 the Cincinnati Park Board (CPB) formed a partnership with the Metropolitan Sewer Department of Greater Cincinnati (MSDGC) to assist with the implementation of green solutions to meet the regulatory requirements of the consent decree using a triple bottom line approach. This presentation discusses how natural design solutions, BMPs, stormwater controls, and forests are being used to enhance green infrastructure and reduce stormwater flow on a watershed scale. Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024 https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/ As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
