Action Science aims to improve relationships and problem-solving in organizations by (1) reducing barriers caused by defensive behaviors, (2) making incremental changes to the external environment but primarily focusing on internal learning, and (3) establishing new frameworks and routines. Theories of action can help organizations understand the differences between espoused theories and actual behaviors, and move from unproductive "Model 1" behaviors like unilateral control to more constructive "Model 11" behaviors emphasizing valid information and commitment. Action Science uses tools like personal dialogue, case studies, and productive reasoning to help leaders and organizations learn and enact positive change.
