Actinomycetes are a group of gram-positive bacteria that form branching filaments and resemble fungi. They include the genera Actinomyces, Norcardia, and Streptomyces. Actinomyces are anaerobic bacteria that are part of normal oral and gut flora and can cause actinomycosis, a chronic suppurative infection. Nocardia are partially acid-fast aerobic bacteria that can cause nocardiosis, an opportunistic infection seen in immunocompromised individuals that often involves the lungs and can disseminate to the brain.
