Acid rain is caused by airborne acids produced from the burning of fossil fuels which contain sulfur and nitrogen. These acids fall to earth in rain, snow, or fog and damage the environment. The acids leach nutrients from soils, slow tree growth, make lakes uninhabitable for fish, corrode structures, and combine with other chemicals to form smog. Efforts to control acid rain focus on reducing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from electric utility plants and other industrial sources through legislation and emissions trading programs.
