What is Employment testing ?
   Employment
Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and
     the other being the employee.

    Test :
A systematic and standardized procedure for sampling human behavior
               Standardized
               Carefully selected sample
               Systematically scored

Employment testing :
Employment testing is the practice of administering written, oral, or
other tests as a means of determining the suitability or desirability of a job
      applicant.
Testing Abilities

 Ability or aptitude test is a part of psychological test.

 A psychological test is an objective and standardized measure of a sample
of behaviour from which inferences about future behaviour and performance
  of the candidate are drawn.

 Aptitude or potential ability tests measures the latent ability or potential of a
candidate to learn a new job or skill.

 Person’s sensory and intellectual capacity can be detected through these
  tests.

 Ability tests measures job related characteristics such as number, verbals,
    perceptual or mechanical ability.
Objective

 To assess potential candidates

 To build a profile of their individual strength and weaknesses
Types of ability tests

A. Cognitive ability tests

Cognitive ability tests typically use Questions or problems to measure ability to
learn quickly, logic, reasoning, reading comprehension and other enduring
mental abilities that are fundamental to success in many different jobs.

General Intelligence tests :

These tests measure the overall intellectual capacity of a person to deal with
  problems.

Aptitude tests :

These are designed to assess reasoning or capabilities of a person.

                       Types of Aptitude tests

Verbal Ability tests

These includes questions which test your ability to spell words correctly, use
correct grammar, understand analogies and follow detailed written
  instructions.

  Example:
Which of the following words are incorrectly spelt?

  A) Separate
  B) Ordnance
  C) Obviously
  D) Success
  E) none of these
Cont…..

Non Verbal tests:

Non-verbal reasoning involves the ability to understand and analyze visual
information and solve problems using visual reasoning.

For example: identifying relationships, similarities and differences between
shapes and patterns, recognizing visual sequences and relationships
between objects, and remembering these.

It enables students to analyze and solve complex problems without relying upon
or being limited by language skills

Numerical ability tests :

This type of test can be categorized as a speed test and is used to determine
   your basic numeracy.

                            Numerical ability test

Basic arithmetic Number sequences Simple mathematics

     Addition  Percentages
     Subtraction  Powers
     Multiplication  Fractions
     Division etc
Cont…..

Example:
 Arithmetic Questions
     139 + 235 =
     A) 372 B) 374 C) 376 D) 437

 Number Sequences
Find the next number in the series
       4 8 16 32

      A) 48 B) 64 C) 40 D) 46

  Simple mathematics

     15% of 300 =
     A) 20 B) 45 C) 40 D) 35
Cont…..

  Abstract Reasoning tests :
The abstract reasoning test is also called the conceptual reasoning test. It
measures your lateral thinking skills or fluid intelligence, which are your ability to
quickly identify patterns, logical rules and trends in new data, integrate this
information, and apply it to solve problems.

Example:

Which symbol in the Answer Figure completes the sequence in the Problem Figure ?
Cont…..

 Spatial reasoning ability tests :

Spatial reasoning ability involves visualizing and manipulating two-
dimensional or three-dimensional shapes or patterns. A high level of spatial
reasoning ability is essential in subjects such as architecture and in some
    branches of science and mathematics

Example:

Which of the figures will you consider fit to continue the series below?
Cont…..

Mechanical Reasoning Test
The Mechanical Reasoning Test is ideal for the selection of technical and trade
personnel. This test measures a candidate’s understanding of principles of
mechanics, spatial ability, and cause and effect relationships. Specific item content
is wide ranging and includes: wheels, gears, clamps, levers, sliding
rods, shafts, pulleys, weights, conveyor belts, fixed and non-fixed pivots, and
 springs.
Example:

When wheel Y turns clockwise, as shown by the arrow, wheel Z will
  A) turn clockwise
  B) turn anticlockwise
  C) turn to and fro
  D) stay still
Cont…..

 Data Checking tests
Data Checking tests present you with number of tables of information which must
be checked against each other. This type of test is used to measure how quickly
and accurately errors can be detected in data. It is used to select candidates for
clerical and data input jobs, particularly where accuracy is important, for
 example, accounting and banking

Example:
B) Multi ability test

One approach in psychological measurement has been to incorporate a
number of quite varied subsets in a comprehensive test battery.

Wechsler adult intelligence scale test

Wechsler adult intelligence scale is an individually administered
tests, with questions asked orally by a psychologist of the person tested
and answers recorded on a special test form.

C) Psychomotor and Physical abilities tests

 Psychomotor ability tests measure physical ability.

 Physical ability tests typically use tasks or exercises that require physical
  ability to perform.

 These tests measures physical attributes and capabilities, such as
  strength, balance and speed.
