[Asian Architecture] Vernacular as an Essence in Contemporary Design : A Stud...Patricia Kong
A report comparing the style of a vernacular architecture and modern architecture and how it is integrated in Ar. Choo Gim Wah's The Deck House to achieve the suitable thermal comfort.
THE NEW MALAYSIAN HOUSE: THE APPLICATION OF MATERIALSHafizMasri
Students are to conduct FOUR case studies of any ‘interesting’ houses in Malaysia. Case study can be from online search and books. All the FOUR case studies are to be compiled in a well composed A4 report. For each house, students are to identify the TWO spaces of the house together with its choice and application of building materials.

In this session the second cohort of Academic and Cultural Enrichment (ACE) Scholars facilitate a dialogue on diversity issues that impact equity and inclusivity in the library and information field and services. Four diversity issues will be introduced through “ignite”presentations, during which experiences, perspectives, challenges and strategies and best practices related to the issues will be discussed, and will conclude with group summaries of strategies. Using a critical lens and in conversation with these recent MLIS graduates (16-20), diversity concerns and barriers in the profession will be uncovered. This proposed session is an exercise in collaborative learning and in connecting theory and practice around diversity and libraries. - Jennifer Herring, Mari Noguchi, and Touger Vang, ACE Scholars

Site C is located at the DBKL parking lot, just beside the Gombak River where the ROL project is currently taken place. The site analysis is done by us, a group of semester 6 architecture students from Taylor's University Lakeside Campus.
An A4 bound report which shows a detailed explanation of the integration and calculations of day lighting, artificial lighting and its design intention (PSALI).
An analytical report on a double story residential building. Calculations was not included in the file as we wrote our calculations on a different paper and we did not scanned it.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Vernacular as an Essence in Contemporary Design:
A Study on the Presence of a Malay Vernacular Design in the Modern Design of the Deck
House to achieve Thermal Comfort
Research Question(s):
1. What are the design consideration of a tropical house?
2. Why must one use the Malay vernacular design as an approach for contemporary design?
3. Responding to the natural factors, how does the features helped in the design in tropical climate?
4. Why does design considerations needed and how does it helped improve the living condition in The
Deck House?
2. Summary of the topic (300 words):
The Deck House located in Janda Baik, Pahang is known for its modern interpretation of a Malay
Vernacular House. Using mainly steel and glass for its construction, it is located at the hilltop of Genting
Highlands. The Deck House was designed based on the surrounding context, climate and culture in which these
factors will play a role in the layout, design and materials of the building. One of the main features that can be
observed from The Deck House is the open plan layout.
Designed to be placed on the slope of a hilltop, The Deck House uses an open plan layout. Similarly, to a
Malay Vernacular House where they have little partitions which allows cross ventilation to occur. This helps the
air to circulate within the interior spaces and remove the heat in the room faster and thus increasing thermal
comfort. Aside from that, the building is placed East – West direction as a regard to Feng Shui. By placing in that
direction, it helps minimizing the areas exposed to solar radiation and also it suits the wind pattern in Malaysia.
The building design were focused mostly on ventilation and sun – shading. Thus, the Deck House has wide and
tall building envelopes in which helps providing efficient ventilation flow and also protecting the user and the
spaces within the room from solar radiation. Like the Malay Vernacular House, the Deck House is also
cantilevered, without changing much of the contour, in order to gain high velocity air flow and also to protect
itself from ground plants that will restricts its air flow. The premises itself blends naturally in into the nature as it
uses timber as the decking.
In conclusion, this paper will discuss about the integration of Malay Vernacular Architecture into the
Modern Deck House in order to achieve thermal comfort.
