3. THE DEFINITION OF
TRADITIONAL MALAYHOUSE
•The traditional Malay house is an
elegant example of indigenous
ingenuity, practicality and a
monument to the wonders of tropical
timber. A seemingly simple wooden
structure, it was built to dissipate
heat, withstand monsoons and
stands as a reflection of Malay living
•traditional buildings require
significant maintenance compared to
modern construction by how to
preserve wooden materials from the
decaying effect of tropical weather
as well as termite problems

5. BACKGROUND OF RUMAH KUTAI
•The traditional Malay house in Perak is called the ‘
Rumah Kutai ’. ‘ Kutai ’ means old.
•Rumah Kutai only located by the banks of the Perak
River. We can easily find it in the Central District, Lower
Perak and Kuala Kangsar.
•The Rumah Kutai has rare traditional long roof with the
gable end. Most of the house has an attic at the base of the
gable end, which used mainly for storage.
•The walls and floors of Rumah Kutai made entirely of
bamboo matting, which allow natural ventilation and
reduce glare.
•It’s different from other traditional house, which prefers
used timber as a wall and floor panel.
•The main section of the Rumah Kutai has 12 or 16 posts.
The interior is undivided and on the same level.
•It is made up of the verandah, living room and a room. At
the back is the kitchen, which is separated by an unroofed
passage.
