There is a recent fad to use plastic bottles for intravenous fluids in hospitals although tehy are more expensive and non-environment friendly. This study shows why glass bottles should be used in all hospitals

2.  INTRAVENOUS (IV) fluids plays a major role in
trauma setting as majority of patients are nil
per orally.
 IV fluids are used multiple purposes in an ICU
setting. In Neurotrauma ICU.

3.  we are provided with both glass and plastic iv bottles
and as nurses we are free to choose from this. IV fluids
are available in plastic and glass bottle and just the
type of container may cause dramatic difference in
prices with no significant additional benefits.

4.  In This retrospective study carried out over 3
months in Neurosurgery ICU, the amount of IV fluids
indented (consumed) was calculated from the store
register. Type of IV fluid, type of contained (Glass
or plastic), purchase price and utility was entered
into a database. Data was analysed using standard
statistical methods

7.  . The cost using combination of plastic &
glass bottles is Rs 137228.8/ month. If only
glass bottles are used, the cost can be
reduced by almost 50% to Rs 69974/
month. In terms of usability, there is no
significant advantage in parenteral therapy
based on container. For suctioning NS glass
bottles were found to be better than plastic
bottles as they are easy to handle

8.  The responsibility of cost effective use of
hospital supplies needs to be shouldered by
everyone working in a health unit. Use of
glass bottles can result in significant cost
savings without any degradation in benefits.
Glass is also environment friendly and
recyclable and should be used in all high use
areas
