A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an overview of the fundamental principles of management, with a
specific focus on their application in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS). Students will gain a
thorough understanding of the ethical practices necessary for a clinical laboratory professional,
the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Regulations and Accreditation, safety in a clinical
laboratory, and quality management systems. The course also introduces the role of
information systems in laboratory management and the ethical considerations in MLS practice.
The course includes practical application of the concepts, ensuring students gain hands-on
experience and skills.
B. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Analyze the principles of management and their strategic application in a medical laboratory
setting. This includes the ability to use planning tools, manage change and innovation, and
understand group dynamics.
2. Evaluate ethical standards, good laboratory practices, safety protocols, sample accountability, and
sample analysis procedures in a clinical laboratory.
3. Apply quality management systems, biomedical waste management protocols, and the processes
for calibration and validation of clinical laboratory instruments in practical scenarios.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Hospital Information
Systems (HIS), and financial management as they pertain to MLS. Students should be able to
illustrate their functionality and role in maintaining standards in laboratory management.
5. Synthesize ethical considerations in relation to pre-examination, examination, and reporting of
results. Students will also learn about the processes involved in procurement, inventory control,
and auditing in a medical laboratory.

PI 1 Demonstrate professional interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills sufficient to
serve the needs of patients and the public including an awareness of how diversity may affect
the communication process.
PI 2 Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes:
PI 2.1 Demonstrate ability to understand investigation/test requisition.
PI 2.2 Collecting the relevant clinical samples along with complete and accurate documentation with
proper safety measures in relation to sample accountability.
PI 2.3 To transport the samples with precautionary measures to the relevant lab section.
PI 2.4 Demonstrate the ability to prepare clinical sample for processing
