Understand the seven classes of food and how they are used during exercise 
Understand the need for a balanced diet

and why there are limitations 
C – Define and Understand the 
terms of BMR, BMI and Percentage 
Body Fat 
Do Now Task – Mark your questions that you had for 
Homework
BALANCED DIET 
No single food contains all the essential nutrients the body needs to stay healthy 
and function properly. 
Nutrients - a substance that provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life 
and for growth 
And every food contains different proportions of these nutrients. 
A balanced diet is taking in enough of these nutrients equal to what the 
individual needs. This varies for everybody. Why? 
Main advice is to increase our fruit and vegetable intake
INDEPENDENT TASK 
Work through pages 20-25 and create a Mind Map that provides all 
the information for the 7 classes of food. 
Your Mind Map must include answers to these questions for each 
class. 
- What is it made up of? Chemicals etc. 
- How does the body use it? 
- How is it formed and/or processed in the body? 
- What foods can we find it in?
QUESTION TIME 
Write the question and the answer 
We eat different classes of food. One of these classes of food is fat. 
Describe two benefits to athletes of including ‘fat’ in their diet. (2 Marks) 
There are two types of fats what are they? (2 Marks) 
What are the three main groups of carbohydrates dependent on their molecule size? 
(3 Marks) 
Provide two reasons for the body to need water? (2 Marks)
