1. Holly’spersonal statement.
WhenI decidedtostudycreative mediaatcollege,Iwassoexcitedtoexplore asubjectthat allowed
me to be artisticbutalsoincorporate my entrepreneurial skills.Throughoutthe varietyof projects I
have workedon, I discovered andgained new creative andtechnical skills. Beforelong, Ifoundthat
the area of studythatinterestedme the mostwasadvertisingandmarketing. Iwasenthralledbythe
complexitiesandpsychology behindadvertising. AsIcontinuedinmy firstyear, I wouldfindmyself
excellinginthe marketingandresearchsidesof myprojects,quicklydevelopingunderstandingsof
audience demographicsandlinesof appeal.Businesswassomethingthatalwaysinterestedme andI
wouldalwaysjoke howIwouldbe goodon the apprentice butnow Irealise thatactuallyIcan
combine mystrongbusinessmindsetandcritical thinkingwithmycreativityandartisticskills,which
wouldenable me tosucceedinthe marketingindustry.
I tookpart in the youth theatre froma youngage of fourand continueditwithcommitmentuntil I
begancollege. Eachyear,our groupswouldperformapiece of theatre,some of whichwere self-
devisedorsite specific.Thisallowedme tolearnlotsof keyskillsaswe were requiredto work
together, be imaginative anddiscussideasandcreative differences whichattimes, couldleadto
disagreementsbutwe learnttosolve these problemsthough compromiseandsocial understanding.
Later I got involvedinlargerscale communityproductionswhereIwouldbe workingwithpeople of
all agesfrom differentbackgrounds where these skillswere required.
The York theatre royal hoststhe takeoverfestival eachyearwhichisashort twoweekfestival run
entirely byyoungpeopleages12-26. I tookpart in the festival ontwooccasionsandreallyenjoyed
the experience.Ilovedbeinginateamwithothercreative people andgettingchance toliterally
‘take over’the theatre.Schedulingshows,hostingworkshops,runningsocial mediapagesand
promotingeventsare justsome of the tasksit involved.
From a youngage I waseagerto beginworking.Myfirstjobwas ina highendhair salonfor 18
monthswhere Ihad to adapt quicklytoworkingina professional setting, learnaboutcustomer
service andpromotionof sales.I thenI dida short placementat anart gallerywhere Icontinuedin
promotional workandsupportedexhibitionsandevents. Mycurrentjob isina small butsuccessful
local business,hasallowedme touse myconfidence andsocial skillstocommunicate well with
customerswhichhas ledme to get several promotionsoverthe lastyear.
I believethatthroughmyexperiencesinboththe workplace andyouththeatre,Ihave developed
excellentcommunication skills,abilitiestosolve problems,promoteeventsandworkwell withother
people whichbelieve isreallyimportantwhenworkinginmarketing,asunderstandingyour
audience isessential.
