2. Research
My research helped me see what makes a good magazine cover and how to
lay them out in a way that is easy to read, attractive and informative. I tried to
take these skills and use them in my final cover and I think some of them
came threw well. However I had some prior knowledge on front covers as I
have had to make them before so all the information I found was more of a
recap to me. My research on the double page spread was more important as I
had no knowledge on double page spreads up until my research. This is where
my research also did not help me as I focussed on writing about front covers
and didn’t say anything about dps, I found examples of them but never
analysed them or thought about how I could take ideas from them, this made
the research not very useful and I ended up not making a very good dps, my
research may have been one of the main reasons for it lacking
3. Planning
My planning went surprisingly well, Ilayed out all of my ideas and decided
which genre of magazine would work best and what I could have on it, this
helped as I could see how much ideas I had for each and helped me decide on
doing a music magazine. I came back to this throughout production to see
what I needed to add to make it better. I then created a mood board which
helped me see overlapping themes and what style I should make my cover, I
noticed similarities in images colours and fonts in the mood board and tried
to implement some of these into my final piece. To end my research I made a
schedule which helped me with timing and getting things done, my schedule
was not very detailed and was a weakness of my planning as I did stick to it
but barely, this is because for 3 of the weeks all I wrote was production,
meaning if I was still at the very beginning of production in the final week I
would be on track, this was bad and I should have specified which parts of
production I wanted to be up to instead of being vague.
4. Time Management
My time management was okay, I completed my project on time but I would
have liked more time to improve my actual piece, I feel as though it is not as
good as I could have made but ran out of time to edit it and make it look
better. So technically I finished on time but not to a standard I wanted to
finish it. With additional time my products would have hopefully looked a lot
better and I probably would have made an additional double page spread, as I
did not have enough tine to make a second one.
5. Technical Qualities
Banner across bottom of
screen
Central image of band or
singer
Free posters
Barcode
Smaller stories lined up next
to each other
One main color throughout
cover
Button
6. Aesthetic QualitiesTitle:
My title “heavy gauge” is a very good
name in my opinion, I think it is
creative and links to music. However
the font and editing I did to it could
be better. It does not stand out that
much and the red is similar to the
shade I used throughout the rest of
the cover making it blend in, as well
as this is around the same size as the
other text towards the bottom of the
screen so it really doesn’t stand out
as much as I wanted it too. In the
future I would make the colour and
size different so it would stand out
more
Cover lines:
My cover lines are probably the best
part of the cover in my opinion as
they all sound realistic and fit the
theme I was going for, the images I
took all look good and one I made
with photoshop completely changing
the image. I don’t think there's any
way I would have changed these
Layout:
My layout was okay, it is easy to see what
is happening and there is no unnecessary
information which could distract people
from what is important. The banner
across the bottom could be improved as
it is very plain and feels like it is not as
detailed as everything else, it is also I an
odd position creating some open space
underneath.
Colour scheme:
My colour scheme is red, black and grey
with some white. I like the colours I
chose and planned on using these as
soon as I made my mood board, I feel like
they fit the theme I wanted and have
connotations with anger, violence and
blood, these things are also associated
with the music genre my magazine talks
about making it a good colour choice
Main image:
My centre image I chose to use does not fit the theme I chose ad I feel this
makes my work overall look not as good. I wanted to get an image of my friend
where he looked like he would be in a metal band, however all of the images I
took just didn’t look right in the centre of the page. Because of this I had to use
this image, as it fits and doesn’t look out of place. This however does not fit the
style I was trying to do.
7. Audience Appeal
I think my target audience would enjoy my magazine as it has similar pull
factors as a normal music magazine, the fonts, bright colours, style and images
are all similar to what you would see on another heavy metal style magazine
and anyone that was in the market for this sought of magazine would be able
to recognise what type of magazine mine is at just a glance.
The main title is probably the biggest pull as it has the word heavy in it, this
word is used a lot, even in the genre of music itself, and this with he second
word gauge, another music related word, will pull in passers by. Similar to this
the banner at the bottom of the screen isolates the few words written on it,
this really shows off the font and type of wording I have used again
strengthening the pull it will have on my target audience.
