Benjamin Birney created a front cover for a magazine about indie horror games. He used a split background design featuring scenes from popular horror games like Poppy Playtime, Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach, Hello Neighbor, and Bendy and the Ink Machine. He added characters from these games, including Huggy Wuggy and Freddy Fazbear, to draw in readers interested in these titles. Some challenges included incorporating Word and using effects like outer glow to blend the characters into their new backgrounds on the magazine cover.
2. Process
The first step I did for my front cover
was to find the right kind of layout that
matches the genre I had chosen which
was indie horror gaming. So, I thought
to make a split background which
meant having one split of the
background match the game they
come from, these two are from poppy
playtime while the other is from five
nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach. The
idea of the split backgrounds was an
originally idea I produced.
3. Process
Continuing from the first step the next
two splits are also from two other
popular indie horror games called:
Hello Neighbor and the classic Bendy
and the ink machine. By going with
two well known games that will be the
catalyst to catch people attention.
Though making the split background
was not easy as I had to incorporate a
bit of Microsoft word to get the splits
just right.
4. Process
The next step was to add characters
from those games as the main images
to draw my target audience in to what
exactly my magazine is all about, the
characters from the far left to middle
are called: Huggy Wuggy and the other
is Freddy Fazbear. I got these images
online then simple copied and pasted
on to the cover, also used the magic
wand tool to erase any unwanted
background like any white or black
behind them. The characters
themselves were on calmer
backgrounds but getting them to blend
in on their backgrounds was a bit
difficult with the outer glow option.
