OUTLINE
Synopsis of your proposal – what is your film about? What happens
in it?
People are self centred and only care about themselves, everybody is
rude and awful to one another in some shape or form. One day they all go
to sleep and then the next morning they wake up and the world is now
without colour and sound. They then have to work together and be nice to
one another to be able to form some way to communicate and try and fix
the problem and go back to colour and sound. After a few days nothing
happens and then as they are nicer genuinely nicer to each other the
world slowly day back day goes back to colour and then finally one night
they go to sleep and they wake up and the world is back to how it was in
full colour and sound. Thinking that the problem is over and there is
nothing to worry about again they go back to how they were before
everything happened and they start to go back to their old ways, then
again they go to sleep and wake up and the world is in without colour and
sound again but no matter how much they try and be nicer to each other it
won't work because they didn't learn their lesson.
MARKET FIT
When looking at fantasy film's as part of my genre I found conventions that
they were many that I could include as part of my own film. For example
most fantasy films tend to have a positive ending/outcome for the
characters which is something that my film will have as well. For example
at the end of all the Harry Potter films there is always a happy or positive
outcome, even if just like my own film concept the start of the film isn’t
positive (Goblet of Fire).
I also found that although these films tend to have a lot more in terms of
sequels and prequels they also have a simplistic linear narrative for the
majority of films within this genre, for example Goblet of Fire. This works
well for me because of the small time frame of the whole film, 5 minutes.
More with Disney but fantasy films tend to have a more traditional ideology
for example teaching the audience a lesson, while my film has a moral for
the story about being kinder to one another the focus is more about
learning and understanding rather than teaching. Though I still think that
this will fit in with the fantasy ideology of good and evil.
In terms of visual style it was hard to find a film that fit around the concept
of the look/style that I wanted but I did eventually find a film which is the
1998 "Pleasantville". This has a similar look with the world being in colour
and then being in black and white which is what I intend for my own film.
I will also be using the lighting to show the audience the change in
characters attitude, this is a common convention used in fantasy films to
show the difference in the good characters, bright, birds singing and evil
characters, alone, dark woods and raining. This film will follow that same
concept by when the characters are being awful there will tighter and short
shots, much more claustrophobic and darker where as when they are
nicer the shots are more wider and brighter.
CHARACTERS
There will be one character that will be focused on the most however there isn’t
one main character it will focus on a cul de sac or a street and the characters
that live in the house's. Therefore there will be about 4/5 different characters
focused however in flashbacks or cutaways to explain how people are treated
there will be other characters or extras.
Unlike with most conventional films I don't want the audience to like the
characters at the start of the film, the actions that the characters are going to
make should actually make the characters dislikeable to the audience therefore
when the character arc happens towards the end of the film it will make the
audience like the characters more and the moral of the story believable.
I wish for the story to do a full circle so that the audience know that there is a
ending in terms of character development however the audience may be left
wondering if that was all to come in terms of the story. What I mean by this is I
want the characters to be seen doing something awful to make the audience
dislike them such as being awful to animals or shouting in someone's face and
making them cry but at the end of the film or towards the end they will be shown
being nice to animals by their own free will as well as apologising to the
person/character that they made cry. This will show that there motivations and
drive has now changed.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The short film will be aimed at teenagers/young adults between the ages
of 16-20. I will try to target this audience by having the characters within
the film there age so that they will be represented within the film. I will
also make the subplots for the cutaways relevant to the characters and
therefore their age will be taken into consideration and relevance for
example I won't show a parent shouting at a small child but I could show
two teenagers arguing instead.
I also believe that because the concept of the film and the moral isn't
childish and is something that people can relate to in there everyday life
it isn't something that would deter the audience away from watching. I
also believe that the visual affects will help to keep the audience
engaged during the film as well I wish for the film to have little dialogue
and rely more on the visual aspect of the film to tell the story and due to
the fact that the target audience is at a mature age they will understand
the visuals and how they aid in telling the story more than a younger
audience would,
LOCATIONS
I will most likely only shoot in two locations possibly more but the main locations
will be a street or a cul del sac where I can show people going in and out of their
houses but also an areal shot if possible and the next location will be the studio
within college this is because I can either use the green screen or a white
background to act as a cutaway for the scenes needed. This is mainly because I
don't believe that the location for these scenes will be of importance but more the
content and the action present and if the way in which I want to use the cutaways
work as part of a spilt screen they will have slight opacity to them anyway so that
the focus will be mainly on the action.
When filming on location and not in the studio I am hoping for the weather to be
bright and clear and I can just post edit the weather to make it look brighter or
darker than it actual is. As it will be harder to make the overall shot brighter if shot
in dark conditions, therefore I will also try to shoot during the day, although due to
the time of year the days are much brighter I do think that it would be much more
beneficial to shoot during mid afternoon, this works more for the drone shot as
well as it will be much easier to control and manage if the sky is clear.
I only need to film several shots within this location and most of them are repeats
just with different facial expressions and costumes. Therefore the camera will not
move hardly from it's primary location. Due to the location being a communal area
this does mean that there will be traffic such as cars coming past every now and
again to park and move but it won't be terribly busy and due to not having any
audio this does stop the issue of white noise of control. I will just make sure that
there will be no shots that involve the camera being placed on the road or even on
a driveaway that will affect traffic and could cause harm to the cast, crew or
myself.
This does help because it means that I only have to book the studio for the date in
which I intened to use it. With the first location if I will most likely have to look for a
street that works for the image that I intented and would therefore have to ask for
permission to use that more so the doors ect. Within the studio everything is
already be placed in the way that I want it as I just wish to use the white screen,
the only think that I will have to change is the lighting that is provided which I can
do myself.
RESOURCES
I will need a camera and therefore a memory card. Alongside the camera I
will also need a tripod to make the shots all steady and I will need a drone
for my aerial shot. I was also thinking about using a slider to use in
production as part of the shots where the characters are walking, to show
the a difference in shot types so that the audience doesn’t get bored from
visual repetition.
The editing process I will also need a computer and I will be using adobe
software such as premier pro, aftereffects and photoshop as some of the
examples. I will have access to the software from the computers that are
available at college but I will also have access to the adobe software at
home as well. So this makes the editing process easier to access and more
efficient in terms of a time schedule.
This is more about the actors themselves but the costumes that they wear
will need to be the same if we need to go back to reshoot shots but also I
want there to be a difference in the clothes that they where during the
scense in colour and the scenes in black and white.
CREW
REQUIREMENTS
It helps the fact that people who are filming alongside me during production are
within my class and understand the settings and features, both during filming with
the camera and with the software as part of postproduction and editing. This means
that I will have help and advice as well as peer feedback at a level were they
understand what I am trying to convey in a professional standard.
I will also try and find either people in my class or maybe someone from the music
department, more music tech than actual music to help create music, sound effects
that I wish for my film. This is because of copyright issues so I can't just find and
use audio clips that I have found online, and as I found out in past experience with
my indent project it is very hard to find the right type of music to fit the tone and
style of what you want to convey with the royalty free resources that are available.
So therefore having someone able to create the sounds that I would look on
software such as garage band would be ideal as they will know what they are doing
in terms of manging the software and I have an idea about what I would like for
them to make. If I can't find someone to do this within college I have a friend who is
studying music technology production as for University degree and she has offered
if I send her the completed film, edits and VFX included that she will add sound
effects and a backing track extra, and then send it back to me. This is a last resort
as I don’t want to send her the footage as I don't know how long it will take for her to
get back to me and I don't have as much creative control as I would if it was
someone I could talk to in person at college face to face.
CAST REQUIREMENTS
For this film I will be needing at least two to three main cast members and then I
will also be needed another three people to be extras/side characters for this film.
The extras will be used to help further empathise the story of the characters and
their overall arc.
The people that will be within my film are my friends and classmates. This helps
with telling the story due to the target audience and therefore who I aim marketing
the film to, by having the cast represent characters in a similar age range helps to
further empathise the relationship between the characters/story to the audience.
I also have other people as a back up for the this film however due to the fact that
they are at university it may be harder to get them to film at the location that I wish,
so I could either have to change the location to accommodate or change the script
to fit around the contingency plan.
The only think that I need in terms of the cast is for them to turn up with an
understand of what they will be taking part in, as in they have read the script, and
that they have a costume relevant to there part.
BUDGET - REALISTIC
Overall the budget for this film will be fairly minimal. This is because the only cost will be from travel to
and back from shooting locations and college for planning and editing. This is because all the equipment
that I will need such as a camera, SD card, battery and a tripod, can be provided to me by college. If I
also wish to use the studio to create the flashback effects I can also book the studio at college, which
also comes with lighting as well. Speaking of lighting if I do need additional lighting or even a slider for
particular shots then I can also get them from college to use for free.
When referring to the contingency plan I could argue that I have to take into account Adobe student
membership that I have so that I can use software such as After Effects, Premier Pro and Photoshop at
home if I were unable to edit the footage at college. This is a total cost of £16.74 a month. As part of the
contingency plan I will set aside money for fuel to pick up the actors for this short film and dropping them
back of, due to the fact that the actors all live within a reasonable distance from each other it won't be
going out of the way to pick them all up at once therefore the fuel cost will be lower. I will set aside £10
for fuel for this even though I know that this will be more then I actually need however just in case
something happens, or there is a possible change in location that is a further distance away I can use
this money to subsidise.
Working at the fuel cost to and from college four days a week and I estimate the making and production
of this film will take about four to five weeks to make. The fuel cost will roughly be £40.
Then considering that I'm only going to be traveling to one maybe two locations at the most because all
the other locations that I will be using are within walking distance of each other, this means that there will
be hardly any fuel that I need to use. However I will account £10 of the budget towards this aspect of
travel cost, unless I am picking the actors up and dropping them back off.
Due to the fact that I don't plan on being on the location for a while and I only intend to film each part of
the film on location for a short section of time, I don't believe that it is necessarily to include food and
drink into the budget.
So overall the budget comes to a total of £76.74 for the five weeks of production.
SCHEDULE
I will break the schedule down into the seven weeks that I have and
each week will be dedicated to a part of the project whether that be
production or post production.
I aim to have all the filming complete and done within the first 4 weeks
and that allows for the last three weeks for editing and post production.
I will try to aim to have the all the footage filmed within the first three
weeks however the last week is just for contingency for if I need to film
anything extra, if I don’t then I will start post production and editing in
the fourth week instead of the fifth as intended. I intended to have my
film finished and completed within seven weeks this means that I then
have longer to edit the film if I feel like it needs it but also I have more
weeks to play about in terms of contingency if I need to rearrange or
change the schedule for some reason.
I am going to keep track of this through these production stages but
also on my phone on my calendar I have set each week to be a part of
production so that even if I can't access a certain production stage I can
still write up or do something else productive for that stage as I will
know where a bouts I am in terms of progress by the notes of my
phone.
