3. Research
• For my first part of research I looked into four different manga’s and have analysed techniques artists/authors do in order to apply a
story within a comic such as panels, sound effects and overall art style as well as shading. I have even looked into how they got
published into certain companies. In my project I have tried applied an in depth and creative story heavily influenced by these four
manga's such liked the characters and lore. I have tried using my skills to get the same effect Takehiko Inoue does with vagabond and I
have also tried creating clever and creative panels like Sui Ishida does with his Tokyo ghoul manga. the thing that I haven’t applied from
this research is the fighting aspect that I have been inspired by Kohei Horikoshi in my hero academia. This is because I have not included
a fight scene within my comic as I ended up with a trailer instead. Forther more, I think that the in depth analysis is the strength of my
production however there are some weaknesses. For example I think I have not talked enough about different genres of manga's as
they all are mostly revolved around action adventure. Speaking of genre I haven’t talked in depth about there genre in general. The fact
that I have only talked about manga's and not comics which shows I haven’t researched world wide.
• I then researched my audience by creating surveys and sharing them online for people to answer. I think one of the strength of my
questionnaire I that I have found plenty of people to answer and in different age ranges meaning that I will have a mix of different
answers and opinions although are some negatives about my audience. For example i have mostly audiences my age making it unfair
for people that are older or younger to show us there opinions. Most of these audiences are close friends making it untrustworthy for
them to give serious answers. Another strength is that I have given questions that really matter such as the gore, nudity and harsh
language. This question can be very opinionated as many people don’t like violent content and some people do. The questionnaire is
the only way of knowing what most people want. This helped my find an overall view on a general audience helping me find what I
need for my graphic novel however This research has forced my to only focus on people in a certain age range.
• I then went onto further on researching my audience by interviewing two people. The strength of my interview are the detailed
answers that interviewee 1 gave showing me a clear view on my audience and giving me plenty of unique ideas for my graphic novel.
Interviewee 2 gave me such simplistic answers which has given such complicated view of my audience. Another strength is the
questions that I have given that are important for me and that I the answers would be very useful for me to know. This hasn’t helped
me much as I am only researching two people however the creative ideas that have come out from my interviewees have inspired me a
lot.
• To improve I would make sure I cover every type of comic book there is around the world rather just manga one area as there
audiences that prefer western comics.

4. Planning
• The area of planning was my initial plans and within my initial plans I created two mind maps to gather the most ideas I
possibly can. This ended me making an online mind map and a drawn mind map. The first mind map I created was the
digital one and I had to figure out what project I wanted to create. This lead me to split it into three mind maps which is a
graphic novel, a game and a film. I then went into depth with each mind map plotting as much as I can. I then looked at the
conclusion of this and chose the graphic novel as my project. I chose it because it was one that was most full of creative
ideas. The weaknesses in making a digital mind map is that it can feel very uncomfortable having to constantly create a new
box and manually moving the boxes to an area where it isn’t obstructing another box. This makes the process slower. It is
also untrustworthy to save as sometimes as I have lost my work no and then. When the pain of creating the mind map is
over, it finishes of with a clean professional looking mind map clear to the eye.
• I then went onto making my next mind map which was hand drawn and is mainly focusing on the graphic novel. This means I
could look into my story, techniques and designs . The mind map was not only filled with writing but with sketches of
characters, creatures and items with in the story. This allowed a visual representation and even lets me practice my skills.
The strength through out making this is that it allows me plot ideas down quick and easy and lets me draw shapes which
the digital mind map cant do. The weaknesses however is that it look very rough and messy which is unpleasing to the eye.
• My next plan was to create a mood board which is just making a page full of images related to my graphic novel such as
comic covers and comic pages. I chose certain images that would help me with my project by inspiring and giving me ideas. I
chose images that have creativity that attracts an audience and images that have clever techniques on making a visually
pleasing design. The strength of creating this is that it its quick and easy while also being educational without having long
descriptive writing.
• If I had to improve on my planning, I would definitely be far more in depth with my mood boards making sure I cover
everything as well as being more neat with my hand drawn mood board.

5. Time Management
• I think my overall time management was unsuccessful as I have had to shorten down my graphic novel due to situations. For
example I went to st Albans during the Easter due to family business which lasted over a weak of college meaning I couldn’t
do my media work as I didn’t have a working computer with me. I has to do the media work during the production weak
making me unable to create my production. When I finally started the production I couldn’t stick with my schedule as I had
only had a weak to do both my comic and cover. This also meant I couldn’t do a third product. I had to reduce my comic to
four pages making it a trailer like comic instead betraying what my audience wanted. If I had more time to create my work I
would gave created a fully professional chapter full of adventure and mystery. I would have been able to introduce my
second protagonist. I would have then created a poster advertising my product.

6. Technical Qualities
Berserks character has a lot of armour in his design is more mature
and gritty however my character a very young with a no armour at all.
The similarities with the characters design is that they both wear
caped and where belts and boots. They both also have swords.

berserks character is very sinister and

My comic is different from this comic as my comic has a lighter tones
style with simple textures where as berserk has many dark shaded
tones with a lot of gritty detail.
The setting and genre is very similar as
it set in a fantasy world which includes
creatures such as goblins, werewolf's
and orcs. The characters fight the evil
and saves the good. Both comics
include graphic and violent scenes.

as there is no sound to so that the titles replace

7. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my final product is really creative and different to other comics making it quite unique.
The strength of my comic is defiantly within my skill of drawing as I was able to make attractable
pictures such as the tree house design, the elven town on top a sky island, settings, creatures and
characters. I was able to make unique and lovable looking characters such as hearth and the
prince. I gave them understandable emotions making them have a sense of personality while
looking very relatable. I made sure that the setting defiantly looked very different a

8. Audience Appeal
In my quantitative survey I have gathered many responses and opinions and have planned on whether I should apply
them to my project. For example for my first question I have asked about gender which came out unfair as I have a
rather large amount of male compare to females answering my survey but despite that the results are very unfair. I was
still going to try and make my audience appeal to both genders by making two protagonists, one that is female while
the other is male however I have leaned towards mostly male as I have only ended up making a trailer comic which
made me end up not introducing my female protagonist. It would be difficult to make a comic for females as i am male
myself and I have very little research about females in order to attract them. The next question I asked about the age
and most of them are 11 to 20 year olds meaning I have research about teen comics and shows to see what teenagers
like about entertainment. I have adapt my comic to suit this age by creating protagonists that are in there teens and will
relate to a teenage audience. I then asked about genre and he most chosen were fantasy, and sci-fi which my graphic
novel definitely is. For example it is clearly a fantasy as the setting is of flying islands with giant tree houses and castle
on top. It also about an elven castle being attacked by a giant death worm creature adding more fantasy. The sci-fi
aspect comes in as the death worm is covered in advanced steam punk armour. I then wanted to know the amount
pages they wanted to read. The most pages they said they would read is about 20 which means that i had to make a
long enough book that isn't too short and isn't too long however My project ended up being a trailer meaning I had to
reduce the pages to four. I then asked if they wanted multiple protagonists within my stories and many of them said yes
so I had to try to create more than one character however I didn’t make a full story allowing me to only introduce one
protagonist without revealing the other. This next question I was about having adult scenes such as gore, nudity and
harsh language and if my audience would want to see this. Many of them said yes meaning I had to definitely include
some graphic scenes in order to satisfy my audience however I did not end up with any graphic scenes as the sneak
peek didn’t have any scenes in which gore and nudity would be included. I didn’t add any harsh dialogue as I thought I
didn't suit the characters.

– The first thing I liked about the product is that it looks
very professional for an amateur comic strip that was

interesting to me as I like the mystery that it creates.

– The product is very in detail, I like the different
characters and detail within them. I like how the story
follows through and the illustrations help to support

– I think the product could have been improved if
coloured in, this would have added to the detail of the
product and helped with the audiences imagination. I
consider that this has been done because of the time
spent drawing out the product.

• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
– What I agree mostly with my feed are the comments on dialogue which both feedback 1 and 2
have mentioned. For example feed back one states that the dialogue doesn’t seem natural and
is a little cheesy while feedback 2 states that my dialogue is too dull and doesn’t fit with the
scene. I agree with these statements as I admit that I rushed the script resulting in non
creative dialogue without any thoughtful slang and idiolect for the characters. This even
resulted in really bad speech bubble designing looking unprofessional and messy. I also admit
some panels looking a little odd and very rough as again rushed them. Some panels are
pointless becoming bland and uninteresting to the eye.
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
– What I disagree with the feedback is especially the comments from feedback 2 and 3. the
main comments I disagree with are the ones about adding colour as feedback 1 states I could
improve design by adding colour as this would lighten scenes making the scenes more clear.
What I disagree with is that adding colour can waste preciouses time while being stressful. I
think my project is clear enough without colour as I added a level of shading. Feedback 2
states that he think the product could have been improved if coloured in as it would have
added to the detail of the product and helped with the audiences imagination. I think that
most of audience have a level of imagination as I have found from my research that they read
many professional published comics that are black and white. Published authors do this as
colour cost a lot while again wasting time.

Overall my feedback has been very educational as it has made me reflect on project helping
notice what I need to improve. For example feed back on states that Some of the drawings on the
comic are a little wonky at times and could have been done better. I think this statement is true
meaning that I have to improve next time. Ide improve by practicing my drawing skills while also
practicing my timing. I would defiantly try and make more time for myself by making a schedule
that I can stick with. This feedback is similar to feedback 2 as he states that I also need to
improve some panels as they are bland and un-interesting. This means I have to start researching
about how other authors can create tell stories without making it visually dull. I will also have
think more creatively with the panel shapes making it artistically fit with the story. The next
improvements I need to make is with my ability to create a good script. For example feedback 1
states that the dialogue for the characters doesn’t feel that natural and a little cheesy. What I
need to do is research into different idiolects and middle age slang in order to convey a realistic
interpretation of a fantasy world. I also need to make each character have a unique personality
meaning that they will a unique way of speaking. I think the cheesy side was because I used
dramatic lines that are cliché and unrealistic meaning Ide have to convey drama in a more
realistic and unique fashion. Feedback 2 also states that The dialogue is too bland, dull and
doesn’t really fit in with scenes. I think this is because my first scene was a scene with one person
meaning that he was talking to himself making it look rather weird. I think I need to make the
character only say short mutters like “huh” or “wow” making the scene much realistic. Feedback
3 as well as feedback 2 state that I need to add colour in order make the scenes look clearer
however I think I only need to improve on my drawing skill. I can then add more depth in shading
and detail with good perspectives. This would then make a enjoyable visual look while also being
clear and understandable to the reader.
