Just like WWI and WWII there were more than just one cause for the Cold War. In many cases it was because of rage, anger, and the fear of communism. This is because bridges were burned in WWII because Stalin was upset that it took the United States and Britain so long to setup a front in France which contributed to the Soviet Union losing millions of troops. Stalin was also upset that the United States terminated the Lend-Lease aid before the war was even over. The American and many Europeans feared a communist society and after WWII European countries such as Britain and other countries such as Vietnam were unable to fight back and hold up against the Soviet Union due to the simple fact that WWII drained most of their resources. Some see it that the Cold War was mainly against the United States and the Soviet Union simply because the United States was funding and helping defeat the Soviet Union more than any other country. There was never actually a war between these two countries it was mainly just hostility. “The term cold war refers to the fact that, although the United States and the Soviet Union never engaged in direct military conflict- that is, their own armed forces never actually fought each other- the relationship between them was froze into one of deep hostility” (Shubert, Goldstein, 2012, sect. 5.1). A part of the Cold War was in fact the arms race when the Soviet Union created their own atomic bomb and both the United States and the Soviet Union wanted to create 25,000 nuclear weapons by 1990. This lead to many to be scared for the future of mankind. The main reason as to why the Cold War started however, was because of the fear of communism and the lack of support during WWII. Some other smaller reasons were things such as the Soviet Unions fear of the atomic bomb, many European and American leaders disliked Stalin, the Soviet Union wanting to spread communism throughout the world, and the Soviet Unions expansion into Eastern Europe. The United States and the Soviet Union had many political and economic issues and this also helped lead to the Cold War.

Additionally, while the government set targets to build over 1 million new homes by 1951, housing shortages remained an issue as only around 800,000 new houses were completed. Prefabricated housing provided a temporary solution to the shortage but was meant to last only 10 years though many prefab homes stood for decades.
Labour social reforms 1945-51 - Poverty
The Family Allowances Act of 1946 provided weekly payments to mothers with two or more children to help families struggling financially, especially those where fathers had died in war. However, it did not help families with only one child and payments stopped at age 18. The National Insurance Act of 1946 built on previous acts to provide benefits like sickness, unemployment, old age pensions and other benefits by requiring weekly contributions from working-age people. However, the poorest still struggled to pay and the National Assistance Act of 1948 provided additional financial help for these individuals. Studies in York in 1936 and 1950 showed poverty levels falling from 36% to only 2% due to these welfare programs but benefits did not always keep up with inflation.
Labour social reforms 1945-51 - Unemployment
The Labour government nationalized several key industries like coal mining, steel production, electricity, and railways between 1946-1948. This was done to ensure these important industries were controlled by the country rather than private companies. Owners were compensated for the nationalized industries. Nationalization allowed the government to use tax money to fund unprofitable businesses and increase apprenticeships to reduce unemployment. However, nationalization was very costly and this high cost reduced funds available for other issues. Labour also introduced policies aimed at improving working conditions for workers through measures like paid holidays and secure jobs at docks. Changing Cold War Relations - why did change happen
- 2. The USSR went through many changes in the 1980s, leading to the Cold War’s end. There are many different reasons for these changes.
- 4. Financial problems Government-owned businesses were badly run and needed changes to stop this, including private investment. The USSR was also struggling to fund its military commitments.
- 5. Poverty Many Russians lived in poverty. They faced long queues even to buy bread. People in the USSR could see on TV that the West was not this poor. Without changes, the USSR risked a revolution.
- 6. Military problems The USSR was failing to win the Afghanistan War and it was costing them too much money. The Soviets also could not afford to keep military control of Eastern Europe.
- 7. Chernobyl Chernobyl was a nuclear power station in the USSR which exploded in 1986. In spite of the deaths it caused (and later cancers) it was kept secret at first. Gorbachev was shocked by this.
- 9. Influence of the USA The USA put more pressure on the Soviet Union. US President Ronald Reagan hugely increased military spending, which the USSR could not match. This included building Stealth Bombers.
- 10. The USA also tried to develop the Strategic Defense Initiative (or Star Wars). This was an anti-missile system based in space. If successful this could have made Soviet missiles useless.
- 11. Reagan tried to persuade the people of Eastern Europe to rebel against the USSR. They used radio broadcasts such as ‘Voice of America’ and ‘Radio Free Europe’ to encourage this.
- 12. Eastern Europe Like in the USSR, people in Eastern Europe lived in poverty and wanted change. It was hard to stop revolutions. Groups such as Solidarity in Poland opposed Soviet rule.
- 14. Mikhail Gorbachev Gorbachev was the youngest ever leader of the USSR. He introduced various changes including working with western leaders and reforms such as Glasnost.
- 15. Ronald Reagan US President Reagan was very anti-Communist. He gave support to Afghanistan and had an influence in Poland too. He also increased arms spending to cause the USSR financial problems.
- 16. Pope John Paul II Pope John Paul II, from Poland, gave many speeches which hugely influenced Catholic Poland and the West. He supported Solidarity, the group that helped end Communist rule.
- 17. Margaret Thatcher UK Prime Minister Thatcher was a big supporter of Ronald Reagan. She had good relations with Gorbachev. Thatcher also helped by allowing the USA to base nuclear missiles in the UK.
