Work-Life Balance For Passionate Geeks - #OpenWestJoshua Warren
Work-life balance is touted in job postings everywhere - but what does it really mean? If you’re a passionate developer that’s excited about the technology you work with every day, you probably spend a fair bit of time outside of the office doing something that looks a lot like what you do at work. Even if you’re excited about your work, it’s important to find ways to rest, recharge and disconnect periodically. After spending 7 years building a team of passionate developers, I’ve learned that everyone approaches work-life balance differently, with vastly different results.
Here is a presentation which facilitates the learner to know what is Work life Balance? Gives us tips to balance work and life, and also emphasis the importance of work life balance through comical strips. This presentation can clearly frame a outlook of Work life balance.
This was a presentation given by Jimmy Young, Senior Practice Manager at Lloyds Banking Group, to the APM Scotland branch membership in Edinburgh in September 2014.
Jimmy's presentation provided an insight into how Lloyds performance manage, assign and develop their project managers in a £1.5billion+ portfolio of projects delivering over 33,000 changes a year. A key component of this work is the personal resilience of the colleagues and their ability to cope with stress in both personal and business life.
Increasing recognition of the importance of the work/life balance and the true cost of stress in the workplace was spectacularly illustrated by the problems faced by their own CEO António Horta-Osório in 2011.
Antonio recovered and was able to return to his post but now has a support infrastructure in place to prevent overwork. This ethos is now prevalent throughout Lloyds with the acknowledgement that “sometimes it is OK not to be OK” and staff are supported by people like Jimmy who can help them to develop resilience and redress the work/life balance if they are feeling pressurised or stressed.
Jimmy handed out a “How balanced is your life?” worksheet that the audience were able to fill in before and after his talk and then do some self-analysis on areas which might be a cause for concern. We also grappled with the question “which way round does the toilet roll go?” (Jimmy and I disagree on this!) and why some seemingly trivial things can be trigger points for underlying issues. Lloyds is building a caring, modern workplace where there is a collective responsibility and sense of community resulting in, unsurprisingly, happier and more productive employees.

Work-Life Balance. Is that a real thing? What defines it? Who defines it? All valid
questions, and we’re here to tell you there is no right answer. We went ahead
and asked some of our leading ladies here at Access Communications how they
define “work-life balance,” and how they manage to climb the ladder while juggling
everything that is thrown their way, both at home and at the office. Read on to see
what they have to say.
In today’s’ stressful times, balancing between work and home can prove to be quite challenging. Constantly trying to fulfill demands at work and home can become challenging and lead to stress and dissatisfaction. And gradually, these negative elements take a toll on work performance and personal life.
This webinar goes over some helpful tips and tricks to balance your work and personal life without compromising on spending time with your loved ones.
I was recently inspired by a tweet from Michael Karnjanaprakorn (founder/chairman of Skillshare) who shared that one of his most recent hires shared a personal deck to tell her/his story. I thought I’d give it a shot.
The term Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) was coined over two decades ago to designate applications of information and communication technologies to the operational management of transportation networks. The main promise of ITS has been very consistent over that period: network capacity can be freed up by optimizing traffic controls and empowering users with accurate travel information.
It can be debated how much faith practitioners and policy makers have placed in technology by investing their resources, as well as the extent to which Intelligent Transportation Systems have delivered on their promise. However, there is no question that steady and sometimes spectacular advances in computing technologies and usage trickle down to transportation applications in important ways. As a result, new products and services emerge continuously. They include systems that address the direct needs of networks managers, as well as others that are developed in tangential markets (e.g. automotive) or even through non-market mechanisms (e.g. many mobile web applications).
This talk presentation reviews major trends in information and communication technologies and demonstrate how each of them is driving innovative transportation services. We attempt to envision how those trends might develop in the future, so that we can finally examine some of their implications for travel demand and network management. There lie both challenges and opportunities for transportation engineers and planners, but either way, profound changes appear inevitable.

Complacency is one of the greatest enemies of the mature worker. If you aren’t growing in your role, learning new skills, open to new and better ways of doing things, you can be sure that someone else around you will be. Often people who are caught unaware by a redundancy recognize, too late to save their job, that they have not proactively adapted within their role or have not been attuned to the politics of what was happening around them.

Most entrepreneurs and small business owners started out their careers working for someone else. You might have had a career for 5 years or 50 years before you decided to start your own business. Or you may even be working for someone else even as you struggle to develop your own business in your spare time. There is an employee mindset

What is the best way to find a part-time job_.pptxRicha Verma
Part-time workers are employed in many different businesses for seasonal or transitory positions. Entry-level to managerial positions are available in these part-time jobs.

With millions of people still out there looking for a job, there is no doubt that competition among job seekers is tense. On the part of hiring managers, they don’t want to waste their time reading the application letters of those with resumes that don’t seem to stand out from the rest.
Changing jobs can lead to both positive and negative results. Since you will never know what the outcome of your decision will be, it is crucial that you make sure that it will be for the better and to your benefit.
In days gone by, people were happy to stick to an organization for a decade or more, often starting and ending their careers with a single company. That concept of permanency does not exist anymore. Job hopping is on the rise and becoming extremely common. A survey by staffing firm Robert Half found that 64% of workers favour job-hopping, a 22% increase from just four years ago.

Talking about money can be as difficult as asking a boss for money. The thought of negotiating a salary increase is one of those things that can often make you feel very isolated. This can make you feel quite uncomfortable, even embarrassed.
Many employees prefer to do just about anything rather than ask their employer to pay them more. Also if you think you deserve a pay raise, it’s a must to negotiate.

5 Steps To Regain Your Confidence - You Have Choices
1. Five Steps To Regain
Your Confidence
When It’s Been Shattered
You have Choices
2. You Have Choices
The biggest difference between a confident person and someone who lacks
confidence is that the confident person recognises that they have choices and they
are prepared to back their decisions. Even if your confidence is still not strong take
the time to consider the options that you currently have.
Your choices must be determined by your financial security and your responsibilities,
but let's look at the choices and see if any of them are possible for you to consider.
Working less hours
In previous posts we have talked about continuing in your job but in another area
within your organization, or changing careers altogether. Now we have the third
element which involves the number of hours you actually work. Achieving your goals
might prove to be as simple as changing from full-time to part-time work.
3. To add more variety to your range of options you could have a “portfolio career”, that
is full-time work consisting of different part-time work. For example you could work
five days a week, spending Monday and Tuesday as an independent self-employed
consultant and then work Wednesday to Friday for a firm which employs you. So your
options can be summarized as:
• Full-time at the one job
• Part-time giving yourself more free time
• Full-time combining two part-time commitments such as an income producing
job and self-employment
Job share
Sharing your job is another option to consider. A job share situation can be described as one
full-time job, performed by two people each working part time, sharing the responsibilities and
roles within the job.
There can be problems if one of the workers is not pulling their weight but provided both are
happy in their role this can be the best of both worlds. The employer is getting two great
workers, and the workers are getting the right mix of work and play, although obviously they are
effectively halving their income.
4. Start your own business
This is an option many people choose when they make a career change. For many
mature workers a home-based business, consultancy, or online business enables
them to use their skills and experience for their own benefit. However you need to be
very sure that this is the right path for you before resigning from your current job.
There are pros and cons for self-employment as a career change alternative.
However, if you carefully consider your decision and plan well there’s no reason why
you can’t thrive and be successful.
Governments today provide considerable support for people
wishing to start a small business. Many of the resources are
free. Short courses about operating a small business are
readily available. If self-employment appeals to you there
may be support and assistance, even financial assistance, to
help you create a strong and successful business.
